This is the painful and bleak outcome to the series. The ending to the show however is the happy ending. Either way this was a great show with a very VERY creative ending to both the show and this alternant ending.

1 point because of Eva fights, 2nd point animation, growing up enjoying the first 24 episodes while 25 & 26 are kinda replaced with this brings my p*!s to a boil even more. This movie out right makes you hate the main character even more, where as the series went you grew to like him as you know he has faults but he is learning HOW did the writer and creator mess this up. I understand back in the day the creator was unhappy with the fans and this was basically a middle finger but to give it 10/10 stop sniffing your own farts come on. Now I get 3.33 and why the change.

The original series is the greatest thing ever in Anime, I am convinced. However, the first movie is a rehash of the series, followed by the first half of this film. If you want the full set, buy both movies, but if you just need the story, buy the series and this DVD.
Still, easily the best series I've ever seen.

I don't get those people who say this was a lousy ending to Evangelion. I think it was a perfect ending to it. If you've only seen the original 26 episodes of NGE, you -must- watch EoE. It can be watched as a replacement for episode 25/26 or you can watch it in addition to them. But whatever you do, don't ignore End of Evangelion, it would be a mistake!

It is the movie that has marked me the most in my life and even if it is not my favorite, it enters my top 10 favorite films for me. this movie is the close of the original 1995 series and it's too good

I was somewhat fascinated with the original series. This, however... The last line expressed exactly how I feel toward the movie.
Any hopes for the holes to be filled, background of Gendo Ikari, SEELE, or more character development were dashed. Starting with a violent attack, it transforms into a more violent mash of giant entities gouging each other's eyes, tearing off parts of their bodies, then falling apart and rotting away.
"Will you be OK?", asks Shinji at one point. What kind of a reply did he expect? "Well, my head fell off, then split in two, and my meat has rotten away exposing my vertebrae. But otherwise, I'm cool, thanks."
Hard to believe but I'd prefer the trademark Shinji's whining or Asuka's shrieking at that point.
I can't say whether the author wanted to get back at the studio for meddling with his work, or wanted to say something profound, but whatever ideas were there, have been thoroughly obscured by the rest.

The first two episodes were contentious because they featured a metaphysical group therapy session taking place within the characters' thoughts. Later, as a new finale for the show, the film The End of Evangelion was created.
The End of Evangelion has a reputation for being a sad and fatalistic picture. Its emotional breakthrough is rendered vividly and thrillingly. It's also stunning to look at, with bright flashes of color in each frame. Anno showing the artist's hand behind the images creates some of the most breathtaking moments. The End of Evangelion may be only faintly hopeful, yet much has still been lost.
However, its characters have evolved, and advancement is progress. There is no usual third act brawl or big reveal. It's just a young boy being taught that he has a chance at happiness.

The Epic ending to a good series. This is where the series takes its real turn from what in the first episode looked like a kids show, into something very different. This one is a real thinker, but the action parts are still kick ass. Be prepared, this film is hard to follow and comprehend at times, but if you are prepared to think and feel and dont turn away when things start to get wierd, this film will blow your mind.
