I went into this movie expecting a cutting edge look at the state of the art MONSTERS! What I got was a docudrama with dark octopus like cgi wannabe monsters a few times with most of the movie consisting of drama and Mexican life footage. The best part of this movie is the trailer. Why do so many directors and producers feel they need to explore the cutting edge of filmmaking when the tried and true methods would be a better experience. I threw my popcorn at the screen a few times. I was bored silly with the drama in a "MONSTER" movie. HA! Monsters! Give me a break! 9/10s of this movie is boring and the few times you get to see the land octopus its dark and you don't get a good view. These monsters are unoriginal - think SHARKTOPUS! At least syfy had a monster in the movie. This is like waiting around for a view and then....what?! Don't pay money to see this stuff. Don't pay money to rent this stuff. Make a statement - we won't pay our money for this crap anymore!

Man, I'm so irritated with this movie I can hardly contain myself! I read reviews that this movie is magnificent, so I wanted to watch it for the longest time, and I am to say the least completely let down. Utterly boring and pretentious! I watched the entire thing wondering what was going on, after about 30 minutes with nothing happening I decided to just give up trying to enjoy it and just try staying awake. The idea had potential, but really nothing actually happens! You hardly even see the darn aliens that are supposed to be 100 metres tall! It felt like one long soap drama episode with only faint hints of aliens in the background. Also, none of the characters seem to care that gigantic aliens have arrived on earth after decades of wondering if we're alone or not, which should be subject for serious discussion, but all the characters seem to care about is taking photos, gazing contemplatively at sunsets and the possibility of getting off with each other. Oh, and don't give me any of that rubbish that the aliens are integrated with the daily lives of the humans, so they hardly notice each other, if that was the case, then what's the point of having aliens in the movie? Avoid at all costs!!!

How's this for a concept - Mexico is overrun by giant squid like monsters and two strangers have to make it back to the USA? Sounds great doesn't it? Unfortunately instead of focusing on the threat of the monsters the film decides we'd rather be watching people walk, talk, walk, talk a bit more and then do a bit more walking.
If the whole movie had the atmosphere of the opening two minutes then it would have been brilliant. Soldiers fighting giant aliens in a wrecked city IS a better movie than a film about walking and regardless of the budget this could have been done. A slow build up is also fine if it goes somewhere.
I found it utterly boring and the more bored I got the more I found myself questioning the whole story. I mean why is she totally OK with him losing her passport to a hooker? Why would being around a totally charmless jerk put her off her marriage? If the things can float why would a wall be useful? Also why doesn't the wall have a door rather than a gap you could fit five squids through at a time? I could go on but it's pointless, this movie is an utter flop and a major disappointment.
The trailer was also highly misleading, anyone saying "oh but it's not really a science fiction film per se" should watch the trailer and then slap themselves, because that's what it was marketed as and the viewers had every right to expect that.

I was looking forward to this, i had not seen trailers or anything, so didn't know what to expect, but this wasn't it.
Other people say it's pointless, has no story and so forth. It's true tho, it's two people located in Mexico, they arn't in trouble or anything. One is a photographer, and the other is the daughter of some rich guy.
They have to get to the us and a, by crossing the infected zone, and that's it, while they do this nothing happens, they sail in a boat, they walk through forest, they get to America, they see two creatures mating (or something like that), army comes and picks them up, and that's it, movie is over.
movies like cloverfield & the mist still are better movies, some would disagree, but not many.

I cannot begin to explain how terribly dull and pointless this movie is. The title alone is misleading, as the "monsters" in question only appear 3 or 4 times, briefly at that. When you begin to think your are going to see a creature feature the best your gonna get is a brief glimpse in darkly lit atmospheres, and some weird dolphin like screeches. You cant even describe it as a decent chick flick, which it ultimately is trying to achieve, appallingly! The plot revolves around two people trying to find their way home to Amrerica through the infected zone where these creatures live, all the while building a rather shallow love story between them, thats it. Finally when the monsters do make an appearance worth talking about, you're to busy wondering what the last hour and twenty minutes was all about to care. Some nice background shots and a love story that would make watching paint dry seem exciting does not make a good movie, even if it only cost 15 grand. It is a waste of time and money.

Not exactly what I expected, but a movie well worth watching nonetheless. It's a story about a journey through zone infected by alien organisms. Where it lacks action, it makes up by amazing scenery. As you follow the two main characters, you see the fight between humans and the aliens from their point of view – on the TV, in the radio, in the scenery all around them. Most of the destruction happened before the main protagonist get on the scene, which really draws you in and it gives you this eerie feeling it just might be real. While you don't see much of the monsters, you can always feel their presence. At the end you can only feel awe, respect and humility towards the huge octopus-like aliens.
The actors are good and you can relate to them. Whitney Able is stunning girl in a very natural way and she deserves to be cast in lead roles more often.
For such a low-budget movie it's amazing how well it came out. I give it solid 8/10 and hope we will see more movies like this.

I understand this is a very low budget movie. If so, it is another example of the marvels which can be worked with a small budget by original and creative people.
Despite the sci-fi trimmings - ostensibly similar to the recent, but vastly inferior, tentacled alien invasion movie Skyline - this is essentially a two-hander road movie with a touch of growing romance thrown in. The hand-held camera adds verite but doesn't jitter so constantly as to stimulate nausea. There are some gorgeous visuals - both spectacular natural shots and also effects shots such as The Wall. And the two unknowns who we accompany on their journey - the gorgeous Whitney Able and the not so gorgeous Scoot McNairy - are both very good.
But most credit must go to Gareth Edwards, the creative force behind this film.

The movie starts with a professional photographer with a cheap DSLR roaming around the "infected zone", which is infected by some extra terrestrial form of life introduced by a crashed NASA satellite. Strangely, even though the scene is laid in Latin America, all road signs and warning placards are written in English. But they all spoke English in "Zorro"! (thought the "director").
Then, all of a sudden the hotshot photographer has to save some girl with a VERY strange story. Well, actually withOUT a story but he has to save her anyway. The girl is badly wanted by her daddy, a huge publishing tycoon who doesn't want to spend a dime saving his "little girl" but instead threatens the above-mentioned photographer to fire him (OUCH) if he doesn't bring the "little girl" in question back home, and a fiancé, who can give her a pound of obviously fake diamonds for an engagement ring but, again, wouldn't go an extra mile to save her.
The "infected zone" is located in the Northern Mexico, somewhere between Tijuana and Veracruz (the maps in the movie don't have city names on it), but, surprisingly, instead of comfortably flying from Cancun to Houston, New York or any of the 163 cities on Cancun airport departure list, our heroes go to an INCREDIBLE trouble trying to go home through the "zone" filled with something that looks like an octopus with fire hoses attached to it - not too impressive considering the fact that the director boasts making visual effects for (count them) SEVEN movies.
On their way they meet a lot of Spanish-speaking people with Romanian Kalashnikov replicas (two of whom managed to fix a brand new Yamaha outboard at night with only a spanner and not a glitch of light!), an F-18 floating (!) in the river and a dead 4-year-old girl in a brand new Gianfranco Ferrè dress without a scratch on her but they needed a dead child in the movie for "drama" purposes, so don't ask what happened to her. She was somehow killed by one of those fire-hose-octopuses along with her parents and the whole Kalashnikov fan-club.
Oh, but don't you think that those terrible creatures are totally without heart. In the climax scene the two of them are shown making love... or making out... I'm sorry, I'm not a fire-hose-octopusologist so I'm not quite sure what that was, but it was (AWWW!) sooo romantic!
All that is richly spiced with "what's-the-purpose-of-life" dialogues (apparently scribbled by the director's 13-year-old niece) and finishes with a VERY passionate kiss between the photographer and the girl being saved. Which was actually quite a stupid move on the girl's side because earlier in the movie (about 4 days prior to the kiss) she caught him in bed with a port hooker without a condom. YIKES! The kiss is then broken by American military patrol singing Wagner's "Valkyrie" a capella and armed with 1944 Soviet SKS carbines. The end. AT LAST!
Good luck watching!
