Characters are thin, as is the plot, but that doesn't really bother me on this film. We get to experience the dangerous task these young men had to do. How much pressure there is on every man to do their job well to be succesfull and return home alive. How everything can be over in a second if you're not lucky. And how you deal with the fact that the odds are against you returning home alive.

My father was a Lt Col in the Air Force who flew bombing missions with the 490th Bomb Group out of Eye, England in WW II. He passed away five years after this film came out. He said "Memphis Belle" is the BEST representation of what they went through. He watched it many times before he passed. He said each plane had two crews who would alternate missions over Germany. One time, the other team went out and never came back. I watch this film every couple of years to remind myself of what he went through.

"Memphis Belle" is a drama about an American bomber crew as they prepare for and carry out a mission over Germany during World War II. Although the crew is supposedly that of the Memphis Belle, it is actually a conglomerate group of airmen that could represent any bomber crew during that conflict. Except for the name of the airplane, much of the story is fiction, although "based on actual events". However, the producer and director seem to have done their research, as the movie feels "authentic". Unlike other, more current, war movies, which transplant contemporary characters with their cynical and self-involved points of view into the 1940s era, "Memphis Belle" seems to show us the way that World War II airmen actually talked and behaved. The movie has good drama, action, humor, and historical details. It is generally safe for all audiences. (I only heard one incidence of the "f" word throughout the movie.) Highly recommended.

this film tells the story of a b-17 flying fortresses crew on their last mission over Nazi-occupied Europe during world war two. the crew must battle enemy fighters and other threats in order to complete their tour of duty. i really liked this film. all the cast give strong performances. we care for them when they get involved in the fighting and the troubles they face during the mission. the music score also adds qualities of suspense and duty to this movie. the fighting scenes are excellently shot, as are the scenes before they head off. one of these early scenes, the ballroom dance, gives a lot of 'padding' to the men's personalities. overall a very good war movie.

This movie is probably the best air war movie I have ever seen in my life. Most of the planes featured in the movie were indeed real! I even wonder how were they able to film the dog fight(planes vs planes) in mid-air! Not one single scene of the dog fight contained CGI, which is incredibly awesome! For Pearl Harbor, well, that movie contained tons of CGI but Memphis Belle looks like the real deal.

Although this is an extremely great film, it lacks a proper storyline. As the majority of the film is based in the body of the 'Memphis Belle' where all that happens is character building, yet nothing actually happens to the characters. However, when looked at from a historical point of view it is an incredible war film, giving the feeling of what it would have been like to have been in a war plane during the second world war. This is mainly because the film is littered with extremely capable actors who manage to pull off the film with ease. Also when watched carefully lesser well known actors can be found, for example 'rascals girl at the dance' is 'bubble' from 'ab fab' who shows she is not just a dumb blonde! Well worth watching if only for the air based battles.

This really was a good flick!! Every time I watch this movie it just gets better, and I think that is because I don't care how historically accurate it is! Like Braveheart (one of my FAVS) or Platoon, or many others of the same ilk, I like this movie because it does what a movie is supposed to do. It draws you in, it gets you involved, and it makes you care about the conclusion because you truly want to know what happens to the people who's lives you see being played out on the screen in front of you. Memphis Belle had its weak spots and its slow points like most any other movie, but watching it is well worth the time spent. The character development and acting is fairly strong, and makes up for some of the dialogue being weak. I am thinking it's worth 3 lucky rubber bands out of a possible 5.
