Based on a novel which channels HG Wells's invisible man, Memoirs of an invisible man is briskly paced and well acted by Chevy Chase as the titular character who becomes invisible after a rogue accident at a lab facility. Sam Neill plays the bad guy and Daryll Hannah is the love interest. John Carpenter is a great filmmaker and this film is a testimony that he can handle any project- provided he adds his taste to the final product. I think this film deserves more than a viewing. It is the definition of cult.

"Memoirs" is a fairly original take on the H. G. Wells classic, presenting the titular character not as a mad genius but a victim of circumstance. This in turn opens up the comic potential of the film which despite its fantastical premise treats each of the protagonist's predicaments in an utmost realistic way. It greatly enhances the audience's sympathy for Chase and makes us root for him all the way to the end. The special effects are excellent and used much more cleverly than in potboilers like "X-Men" or "Hollow Man" - a testatment to Carpenter's skill as a seasond filmmaker. This is also one of Chevy's better performances. Presumably he clashed with original director Reitman over the film's tone. Apparently Reitman preferred a more comedic approach. I'm glad that Chase prevailed. Oh, and Sam Neill is excellent as the CIA bad guy.

I'm sorry, but if you read this book first and then saw this movie???? How in the Hell can you give it more than 1 or 2 stars. The book is soooo detailed about his life and trying to function in the world and then the movie made it so ha ha comedy with Chevy Chase???? What the eff? Seriously, I don't get it. This was one of the best, coolest, most detailed pieces of writing I have ever read and then they turned it into this silly movie???? If you are reading this review and even have one solid idea of how cool writing can be when it's thoughtful and done well, then you need to read this book first before you see the movie. Please! I swear! The book is a million times better than the movie.

The invisible man concept lends itself to endless comic situations and this movie produces quite a reasonable number of chuckles and the occasional belly laugh. The script is a little uneven and occasionally slow moving. Chevy Chase is perfect as the harassed invisible man, wanted by everyone for his body. Sam Neill is disappointing as the rogue CIA man - the New Zealander's attempts at a North American accent are embarrassing.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie though it missed a tremendous amount of comedic opportunities. But it gave me an idea for a sequel or a TV series where as the invisible man Nick opens up a private detective agency with a female partner (with or without benefits.) sort of like I Dream of Jeanie or even something more serious than that but still with comedic undertones. If his female counterpart was named Nora, then it would be a re-imagining of the Thin Man series (except thinner, very thin) starring Nick and Nora.

Never have I wanted to beat up a director more than I did John Carpenter after watching that pile of sad excuse for a movie. I seriously doubt that Carpenter, Chase, or the script writer even read the book before making this ridiculous farce of a movie that bombed at the box office (the masses aren't always wrong). There is almost nothing in the movie that resembles the story in the book. I mean, if you don't like the original story, don't buy it. Write your own story. Even if they'd read the book, I just don't see a way to make a movie about an invisible man. I mean, you can't see an invisible man so how do you get that across in the film? His trick of showing him in a mirror with a prop got tiresome almost immediately. This crew definitely didn't know how to make this movie. Do yourself a huge favor, read the book and skip the film.

Memoirs Of An Invisible Man is a change of pace for both director John Carpenter and star Chevy Chase. Although critically panned and a box office bomb this movie is far from bad and I became a fan of the movie after seeing it on its initial run on cable. This is a pretty lighthearted film, though much more serious for Chevy Chase and while this may not have been what audiences wanted to see in 1992, I think he did a good job. His love interest is Daryl Hannah, who was good as well. However, for me the best aspect of the film is Sam Neil's performance as CIA agent and killer who wants Nick Halloway(Chase) for nefarious purposes of spying and assassination abroad. The special f/x are state of the art for the early 90's and the story flows well. Overall, Memoirs Of An Invisible Man is a good film that was overlooked at the time of its release and is a pretty easy watching experience.
