I am giving this film a negative review although I did enjoy the two main characters. The film had no arc and little to interest the viewer. The director attempted to tell too many stories and used trite tie-ins that failed to captivate. After a while the only question was "When is this going to end?" If this is her first film then she needs to learn how to edit and to avoid cute but dull characters. She provides no background story that might have helped the audience to care. Her approach is to tell as many stories as possible in as democratic a way as possible with the result that everything is static. Its not all bad but would have been a better film if she had concentrated more on the story of the two main characters and less on others such as the two teenage girls and the horny shoe salesman friend of the main male actor. Altman, among others, can tell a lot of stories well. She is no Altman.

This is a delightful little film about love in the digital age. It combines outstanding comedy with honest emotion to present a series of scenes about a number of interrelated people, each of whom is a bit odd, but real nonetheless. Writer/Star Miranda July reminds us of Rachel Griffiths with an unusual half-smile, which she uses to great effect to convey a wide range of emotions. There are no big-name stars, and I imagine no studio bosses to decide what audiences will or will not accept. So instead, what remains is an honest portrayal of real people with all their quirks, problems, and joys. Ms. July also manages to portray children and teenagers quite effectively as the real people they are, rather than the precocious know-it-alls or predictable archetypes to which most movies subject us. Overall, this is an enjoyable, surprising film that should be seen by anyone who truly likes movies.

A must-see for those who like movies filled with copy-cat quirkiness and sticky, sentimental SYMBOLS: the goldfish in the bag, the gluing of the makeup compact, the burning hand. Throw in a cutesy eroticization of children (or was it a cutesification of pedophiles?) and what could you not like? Plenty. It had some moments, true. The performance artist's own work and frustrating interactions with the careerist curator worked well. But these weren't enough to make up for hackneyed themes. I saw this at a Landmark Theater, which is to independent movies what McDonald's is to the family barbecue. This turned out to be the perfect venue for mass-produced pseudo-rebellion.

No one talks or acts like a human being for huge parts of this movie BUT there are some really true moments stuck inside of the overly awkward and weird stilted dialogue. It can occasionally feel like it's trying WAY too hard to be "Art" and slip in to hardcore pretentiousness, but after a while, you sort of get into the style and it starts to work. I'm not sure it's as great as people would like to say it is, but for something different, it does have some charm

despite the weird introduction, it's a really warm movie... the image is simply great, and the kids act ...incredible. There are moments when you feel like this is a movie taken on another planet, on a better earth version! The humor is subtle, and it's building itself with each and every scene. Sometimes, you feel like it is a world led by children, where adults try to find their way, and only the ones who still keep track of their childhood can feel like home. Great final, too. Life is simple, and God is in the details :) A movie worth seeing, whenever you feel like watching something different.

Enjoyed this film very much. Will try desperately to avoid words such as "heartwarming" " meaningful" and even worse - "nice" as they would do this film a grave disservice but there is an undeniable human warmth about this work that attracted and entertained the both us of who went to see it. This is no sugary sweet "life is a box of chocolates " film - far from it but if I were to commend Miranda July on one aspect of this work ( and I could easily pick out any number ) it is the way in which all of the characters behave like real people. So big deal I may hear some of you say - but this is a really difficult thing to portray and the actors concerned and certainly the director deserve huge credit for making this a film of warmth and enjoyment as well as being an excellent reflection of the human condition. Would see it again and that is definitely a reflection for me on how much I value this film.....
