Kyle Wincott (Robbie Amell) and his dog Max are hunting for weapons in Afganistan. His superiors suspect some of the confiscated weapons have gone missing. Kyle's younger brother Justin is a disappointment to their father Ray (Thomas Haden Church). Pamela (Lauren Graham) is their loving mother. When Kyle is killed, Max is devastated and becomes uncontrollable. Max is taken to Justin during the funeral and Justin adopts him. Justin's friend Chuy's cousin Carmen helps him train Max. Chuy's other cousin Emilio is a drug dealer. Kyle's suspicious comrade Tyler Harne comes to visit and Max is not happy. The plot is more convoluted than necessary. Max as a war dog should be enough to make a tear jerker. Instead, this is overloaded with convenient bad guys with an interconnected villainous plot. A simpler villain for Justin and Max to tackle would have made this infinitely more compelling. I don't find anybody overly objectionable. It is the story that needs some cleaning up. Also, I was hoping the Mexican kids could buck the stereotype but they end up having a drug dealing cousin. A feel-good old fashion war dog movie could be good family fun but this keeps going off track.

Max is a dog trained to help US Marines in Afghanistan. When Kyle, his handler, is killed, Max is adopted by Kyle's family and bonds with his younger brother Justin. However, father Ray is looking to have Max put down because of what he has been told by Tyler, Kyle's Marines buddy. Tyler, however, is still covering up his plan to sell army weapons, which led to the incident where Kyle was killed. This movie surprised me. I was expecting a routine family dog movie – some sentiment, teenager bonding with dog and so on – and, while there is a sizeable chunk of such stuff here, there is actually a tolerably decent plot driving the film. The characters are all likable and relatable, with Max (Josh Wiggins) and Carmen (the very pretty Mia Xitlali) being particularly likable, and Thomas Haden Church alone turns the film into something which is considerably more moving than it would otherwise have been. The climactic sequence features a number of characters, a wide area, and quite a lot of action, and is very well choreographed, with tension maintained throughout. This is a really good family film.

Reviewed by: Dare Devil Kid (DDK) Rating: 4.5/5 stars "Max" is a busy film crowded with serious subject material that rarely goes for cheap nods at sentimentality while still being a patriotic movie that has plenty of heartfelt moments. Director and writer Boaz Yakin ("Remember the Titans") executes the touching material with prudent serviceability, and along with his co-writer, Sheldon Lettich, doesn't condescend to the audience, and, instead, infuses the plot with a surprisingly ambitious and revealing commentary about the experience and ensuing trauma of war. When Kyle Wincott is killed in Afghanistan, his war dog, Max, suffers from PTSD. Max is to be put down because he has trouble listening to anyone else, until he meets Justin, Kyle's brother. Justin adopts and saves Max. As their bond begins to get stronger, a life-altering revelation transpires for the family, ensuring that both their lives will never be the same again. Indubitably, the dog – a Malinois (Belgian Shepherd MWD) steals the film, but there's enough fodder for the talented cast of young actors to work with and leave an impression. Yakin has made a film that has youthful romance, family values, friendship, father-son issues and subsequent bonding, suspense with bad guys, and most importantly, a dog's love, unflinching affection, and absolute commitment toward his master. Young kids, oder kids, anyone who loves dogs, and just about the entire family will get something from "Max".
