I dont get all the really bad reviews for this film. It wasnt that bad but it wasn't amazing either just ok. Yes it doesnt explain a lot and yes its a looped plot film but it tries to hard for the deaper meaning than just a typical looped slasher although it probably would have been better if stuck to the loops without the deepness. The acting isnt great and can seem a bit b movie ish at times but they get the job done well enough. It did have potential to be a hell of a lot better but overall it was different from what i expected and i didn't mind that. The direction is the best part of this film. Some good shots and a mellow score with synth elements bring a nice welcomed atmosphere and help set the tone. Its not the best film ever made or the best looped style movie but its worth a watch nonetheless.

So just watched this at fantasia. It is a good movie, as in it's well shot, the kill scenes are good, the acting is good, however it's not an overly straightforward film.
I was looking for explanation as to what was actually happening but I didn't really get that. And there is nothing wrong with that, some people enjoy that, but not so much me.

As far as the movie goes, the concept is prolly the most innovative to hit Slashers since SCREAM.
But do people not understand metaphors anymore? I'm a straight white male, but it wasn't hard to get that this is a movie about all the crap women have to endure every single day. It also wasn't hard to put myself in the protagonist's shoes and feel her frustration.
Finally, 'The Man' is, in form and in movement, the coolest slasher since Ghostface. Even if he gets beaten up EVEN MORE, somehow.

In "Lucky," Brea Grant writes herself an excellent role as a woman on the edge. Directed with increasingly disturbing fantasy by Natasha Kermani, Brea Grant's May fights the same man, every day.
Unlike similar movies in the time loop genre ("Happy Death Day," "Groundhog Day"), "Lucky" may repeat scenes, but this is not as simple as time resetting. Although events occur repeatedly, the man who comes to kill her everyday also appears to learn how to best attack her, and every day May wears new scars from her fights. The man, however, is never injured.
The interesting angle here is, May is as out of the loop as we are. Except everyone else seems to know what's up. "Your lucky he didn't kill you," is a repeated refrain. The violent evenings apparently just a trivial occurence, just another thing a woman has to deal with and like it. When her husband decides to up and leave after she challenges his lack of concern, May finds herself having no one to turn to but herself. Even other women are dodging helping her, besides offering platitudes. Worse, they won't talk about the scars they have, and their quiet glances at May suggest they know something, and are suprised she hasn't gotten it yet.
This creates a level of frustration throughout, which is piled on after every attack. It's a difficult watch. Where "Happy Death Day" found humour in its protagonist dying every day, May is not so resigned to giving up, and so the stakes are considerably higher. "I don't deserve this," she eventually sighs, seemingly resigned to being murdered, before getting up again to face the man for what could be the 100th time.
Besides the bonkers moments which continue to increase in nuttiness as the attacks continue, the film finds a lot to say about "going it alone" as a woman. May may have written a self-help book about toughing it out, but she's shocked when she stumbles into a carpark to discover she's not alone in being a victim. However, for all intents and purposes, she may as well be. No one wants to talk about their trauma. No one wants to find ways to better their lives, or challenge the systems. May, for all her buzzwords and power phrases (hilariously even using them against the man one night before launching a full on assault), can't seem to galvanise herself to work with others.
Shudder has had a stellar output of horror recently, and "Lucky" adds wonderfully to their collection. A confusing, frustrating, meaty watch.

After barely surviving a brutal encounter, a woman finds herself repeatedly stalked and tormented by a malicious killer only to have no sympathy from everyone around her, forcing her to extreme measures as a way to figure out the secret behind the continued stalking before she finally dies.
There was quite a lot to like here. One of its brightest aspects is the outstanding social commentary present that brings about the systemic abuse women receive in today's society. Focusing on the bluntness of the rejection she faces at convincing everyone around her to believe the story as the trauma and concern she has is wholly justified yet never receives the appropriate reactions since it's coming from a woman. Seeing the arguments against taking her claims seriously draws painstaking realism as the encounters continue do serve as quite logical experiences for more to happen yet the fact that it's being brought up by a woman is enough to turn them down and react with disdain to keep showing up. As well, since this one is based heavily on the concept of her being stalked and battered continuously, there's some great stuff with this aspect. Thein initial attack and confrontation around the house offers a thoroughly engaging brawl around the house as well as the ensuing battles the next few days which can offer plenty to enjoy as the brief-yet-brutal confrontations bring about some fun intrusion to the rest of the film. Battling a fine line between being thrilling while also telling the story about the abuse women face in their lives afterward is rather adeptly handled, overall leading to stellar social commentary alongside the genre thrills. Overall. These manage to hold this one up. All of this is perfectly serviceable if the film didn't try going over-the-top in the final half that's rather hard to understand. Tackling the themes of female empowerment in your own hands and to not take systemic psychological, verbal, mental or physical abuse from any man who attempts to hurt them is a fantastically appropriate and timely story that gets slightly muddied here as the surrealism injected doesn't need to be there. This worked perfectly addressing the topic without adding these extra elements on top of it to distract the viewer especially during this section of the film where it needs the least amount of excess distractions. This, though, is entirely up to a viewer's personal preference how badly it'll affect them being the main issue here.

I appreciate directors and writers who try to do things a little differently to the constant identical horror movies we see everyday. And I like the fact we get presented with movies that aren't as straightforward as others. This movies reminds me of Mother! While I like the ideas behind the movies and trying to get people to think outside the box, the execution of these films needs to be a little tidier. They start off really interesting and as a viewer, you're really intrigued and excited....and then they just go to a weird place and don't come back, and you're sitting there thinking...'huh?'
There were several plot holes in this film and many things that were introduced were not explained at all. Not everyone who watched will be able to deduce certain clues brought up. It doesn't need to be a blatant in your face explanation that takes away from the mystery of the film, but it does need to be addressed in a way the viewer is like, 'ah, ok...I see what they did there.'
It felt unfinished at 1hr 20mins. Could have packed a bit more in to wrap things up.

1. Poor or non-existent forensics reduced the credibility of the story.
2. Like a poor teacher the storyline does not direct the audience into thinking about the issue of fear, but instead has us asking what's going on. The focus was on knives, hammers, blood on floor, bodies gone.
3. Bodies disappearing opens many interpretations some of which are nonsensical which added to the confusion. Was she hallucinating; a metaphor; ghosts/spirits?
4. The poor response to securing the home & ways of protecting one's self gives us another female victim character as helpless & lacking intelligence.
5. Even the DVDs special feature of production staff audio commentary overlay said nothing about the story itself, but only camera angles, lighting, etc.
