This is a classic iconic film in France that many of us grew up watching.
The terms and expressions when they speak relate to those used in medieval times and those are used in a comedic way in the movie. It's a silly movie with some amazing hidden jokes that will most likely be lost in translation if watched with subtitles by someone who isn't a French-speaking native and doesn't grasp history of the French language.
You really need to have that cultural background to appreciate it fully for what it is, otherwise you're missing half of the movie.

I'd have to agree that this film is not for Exclusively English Speaking American Audiences if they've never lived in France. BUT, having lived in France for a few years, I find this film highly entertaining... the jokes and gags are great ("show me your ankles" - the King, attacking the postal truck, etc...) and it's a nice little reflection of the personalities of people I met in France. It's sort of a souvenir to me.
Other great movies to watch are Amelie, Wasabi (Jean Reno and Ryoko Hirosue), Gregoire Moulin Contre L'Humanite (Gregoire Moulin Versus Mankind), and the French Canadian film classic: La Grande Seduction (Seducing Doctor Lewis). Don't watch the English-Dubs, you lose so much in that, stick with the subtitles and capture the rich and brilliant performances of the actors.

I had heard good things about this movie, and I decided to buy it. I tend to like watching a so-called "good" French movie, so I had pretty high expectations of this. However, I watched it... and it actually became quite tedious. I was really quite bored, and found the story to be a bit cliché. I mean, maybe there aren't many medieval time travel type movies... but the things they did were not that interesting.
I really am quite confused as to all the hype about this one. It was OK to pass some time... but I probably laughed twice during the whole movie... and I definitely wasn't crying of laughter in those moments.
So yes, a bit disappointing, I must say. And I'm not saying that I don't enjoy this because i prefer Hollywood... because i hate Hollywood type movies. In fact, this movie reminded me a bit of some of the crap Hollywood make... Meh.

I saw this movie for the first time last night.
It was... watchable, and good for a couple of laughs, but since I saw "Just Visiting" (newer version from 2001), before i saw this one, I just have to say that the 2001 version is much better on all fronts;
Better storyline, better acting, and most of all, it was SO much funnier.
Never the less, as I said, Les Visiteurs/The Visitors is not bad.
Another point of view:
Some of the funny situations is the same in both these movies, so it probably depends a whole lot on which of these movies you see first.
If you see the 1993 version first, there is a chance that you might think that it is better than the 2001 version... Who knows...

Hi
I'm French so this movie may not mean the same to you. It is a « cult movie » for me.
The first time I watched it I was a teenager. I laughed so hard. And the fun of this movie hasn't faltered.
I hope you will give it a try and enjoy it.

I was surfing movie channels late at night and ran across this film. I like watching foreign films, but they usually bore me after a bit. I love Jean Reno's acting, and thought to myself, hey this actor looks just like him! Anways I ended up laughing so hard I woke the wife up three times. It's such simple humor that people of all ages will laugh.

Ridiculous, uproarious, hilarious comedy. Unbelievably funny. Often tasteless, usually inspired, brilliant movie. I couldn't stop laughing.

One of my favorite comedies of all time, this film involves time travel: medieval times clashing with 1988 France. The acting is perfect, the characters are charming, and if you want a funny fantasy film set in beautiful France, you will enjoy this film. DO NOT SEE IT IN ENGLISH, watch it in French with subtitles, ¨okaaaaay?¨ (you will understand what I mean after watching the movie!)
