Walter Hill directed this updated version of "Fistful Of Dollars", which had starred Clint Eastwood as a mysterious gunfighter named Joe, caught between two rival crime families in an old west border town. Here, Bruce Willis plays mysterious gunslinger John Smith, who also gets in the middle of two warring crime families in a small Texas town, though this time it's the Irish and Italians, rather than Americans and Mexicans. Like Joe, John will end up playing both sides against the other, then being caught and beaten, before getting his revenge. Not bad at all really, but so similar to previous film it hardly seems worth the effort.

Basically it's just a movie with a bunch of people going around shooting each other. No plot. No character development. Nothing interesting.
Oh there was one interesting thing --- it rained a lot in a dry desert town. That was the highlight of the movie. If you like seeing rain and tumble weeds and desert dust all in one movie movie then you might like this. If you like plots, and character development, you won't find much here. If you like seeing lot's of people get shot go watch a video game -- you'll get about the same entertainment value.

Willis is terrible in this movie, which makes it nearly unwatchable. Walken is pretty good, but can't save this trash.

One of the finest action films of the 'nineties. Bruce Willis is the cool loner John Smith drifting into town who then shoots everyone that upsets him, saving the girl in the process. Sure, simple stuff but thats all this film is trying to be.
The soundtrack by Ry Cooder is dark and moody, giving the film it's edge. Photography is perfect. It's slow pace brings a levity to the film and is a welcome break from the MTV-style speed of most modern action flicks.
Hey, I'll still be watching this in twenty years time when most other action films of this decade are forgotten. Sure this may not be the view of most people who see this film, but this film has CULT written all over it.

This is by far the worst movie I've ever seen. I'm still angry at myself for paying $1.99 to rent it. I must be honest and say that I did not see the entire movie but only because it was hard enough to stomach the first 15 minutes, let alone the whole thing. Bruce Willis plays some sorta tough guy with a low raspy voice, an unlimited amount of ammunition and a superhuman aim. He manages to fill everyone with enough hot lead to sink the Titanic - very boring.

Gads. What an overkill flick. Bruce Shoots up a couple roomfulls of guys twice, you get to see Christopher Walken do the same thing, there's a few beatings, a burn-out, etc etc.
Not too good. I can enjoy a flick like this on it's own terms if it shows a little life-but this one is simply a shooting gallery. Bruce shoots the two guns like Brendan Fraser in the Mummy, no aim, no timing, goes thru 55 rounds between re-loads, etc. Sure guys.
I always cringe when some guy opens up w/ a tommy gun, somehow misses, but the guy w/ the pistol gets him in the shootout. Ditto a 12-guage with buckshot. Baddies always shooting first but missing? But Bruce can't help but hit? Ummmm sure...
Some familiar faces here-Walken, Kelly(over-acting Horribly), 'Strassi', etc. 'Larry' of 'Newhart' fame, etc. But nothing really to hang yer hat on. Not much even Bruce Dern can do with this.
** outta ****. Bang bang thud.

I am a big Bruce Willis fan and even I could not resist the fast forward button. This movie is going nowhere right from the very start. Willis has had such charm in movies like, Die Hard and Armageddon. Unfortunately he parked that at the door when he made this film. We'll just have to hope for a Die Hard four!

Sure, this isn't Kurosawa, but is an action movie and it works really well. I really feel that if you don't like (or know) one genre you shouldn't be making public comments on movies of such genre. The people who didn't like this movie probably didn't like 48 hours or any other Walter Hill movie. If one person loved 'Emma'or 'Pretty Woman' will probably hate 'Last man...' (I liked both, though. But I wouldn't comment on them). If I want character development or plot I'll surely look for Fellini , Bergman or Kurosawa. When you want action, Walter Hill is one of the best and if it is with Bruce Willis, better. So, if you want action, this picture is great! Abstain if you don't like violence in movies.

This movie is excellent! It takes place in the 1920's, however exists in a very rural part of Texas which gives it an old west feeling throughout. The action sequences are solid and plentiful, and in my opinion there is never a dull moment. The characters are pretty unique, and the plot twists are very unpredictable and leave you feeling very satisfied. The action scenes are much more realistic than die hard 2 (for example), as they always show reloading and great camera angles which let the viewer know exactly what is going on.
Great acting, great dialog, great atmosphere and setting, overall great film. 10/10

I can see LAST MAN STANDING appealing to others, but for me it was a dull affair in comparison to its illustrious predecessors, YOJIMBO and A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. Unlike those movies, which have heaps of black comedy and lively characters, LMS is ponderously serious, shot in a dusty sepia tone which becomes boring fast. While there are some moments of macabre wit, the tone is just heavy-- too heavy for what is ultimately a twisty potboiler. Bruce Willis is pretty good and there are some moments of brutal cinematic beauty, but I was never terribly invested in what was happening, even though the story is pretty much exactly the same as the former two movies.
