If u expect tons of flashy scenes shooting twerking omg omg scenes.. u will not find it here. But u will find an epic story of honour that is as strong as a steel. This movie bring me back to days when i was an young boy full of passion full of joy clinching my sword with my lethal enemy but this was just a sticks, not an real swords. In this movie Morgan Freeman taking us to the world we always want to and don't want to live in :P A fresh look on classic 7 samurai movie. This movie will be a bit to complicated for normal USA citizen, but don't worry u always got your stars to show you the honorable way to the true America glory. peace

Raiden (Clive Owen) must find a way to avenge the death of Bartok (Morgan Freeman) his master who was sentenced to death for challenging the Emperor's (Peyman Moaadi) Minister, Gezze Mott (Aksel Hennie). The reasoning is that a challenge to the Minister is also a challenge to the Emperor and must be dealt with by death. Bartok did have the opportunity to kill Gezze Mott and regretted not doing so. The Emperor rules that Raiden must carry out Bartok's death sentence. Well, this wasn't in the cards. (it was in the script, however) It was never clear to me what country is involved in this. Who has Emperors? Japan, China, France? Hmmm…… I suppose it really doesn't matter as this is not a true story. It does, however, have elements of another movie: 47 Ronin (a good movie BTW). This has inklings of being an epic, the cinematography was outstanding; the acting: excellent; the music signaled it being so; the fights: bloody, brutal and intense; the scene setups were masterful. You almost believed this was a true story. Kudos. (you're too easy) The key to this movie is in the words above " Raiden must find a way to avenge the death of Bartok." Keep that in mind and you almost know how this will play out. I was impressed with the actor who played the Emperor: Peyman Moaadi, who gave a very strong performance even though his screen time wasn't all that much. Some of the fighting near the end, while good, was always in the dark, blurry, too fast and hard to follow who were the good guys vs the bad guys. (the bad guys wore black helmets) All in all a well told story with Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen carrying the load in good fashion. (7/10) Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: No.

May contain Spoilers. Clive Owen has been in some very famous roles, but this one is nowhere near the shadow of his previous best ones. A story line so wayward, that there was no explanation provided about the place, the system or even a background to the story. Its like you are starting to read a book from the middle. The film does little to try and build on something, but that something is forever missing. Its very very predictable and offers no suspense or thrill. The antagonist is bad enough and you know the story has to end with his killing as there are no other development to suggest otherwise. Even the antagonist's story line was not developed a bit, just in the beginning you are let known that he is corrupt and Lord Bartok as an idealist is standing against his will. You only keep waiting for the end to see how the antagonist is killed and are happy that it has ended and very predictably so. There could have been a twist with all the nobleman declaring war on the Emperor to save the protagonist and his motley group of honorable warriors as the emperor himself allowed the corrupt official to flourish under him. But the Japanese director with a culture so innate and loyal to its Emperor, cannot think of it. Most actors' accents are different from the other and its like the world has suddenly converged in this single kingdom all together, with again no development or explanation or even a hint of why so! All in all I'm surprised that Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman have chosen to do a film with a sorely under developed story line.

Greetings again from the darkness. Medieval action films seem to be hit and miss. The best have complex sub-plots and power struggles punctuated with large scale sword-fight sequences, while the lesser films typically offer little more than clanking sound effects and faux castle settings. (Of course this is discounting the classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail) Falling somewhere in-between is this latest from director Kazuaki Kiriya (Goeman, 2009). For whatever reason, the massive sets and timely costumes don't make up for the slow pace and scarce action sequences. The cast is very strong and includes Clive Owen, Cliff Curtis, Morgan Freeman, Axsel Hennie, Shohreh Aghdashlo, Peyman Moaddi, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Sung-Kee Ahn, Noah Silver and Ayelet Zurer. Mr. Freeman narrates a slightly confusing opening that sets the stage for a multi-racial time period that is generically referred to after the "great wars". We soon enough learn that Freeman's Lord Bartok is one of the good guys under the Emperor's (Moaadi) reign of extortion being carried out by the weasely Minister Gezza Mott (Hennie). Refusing to kowtow to Gezza's game, Bartok is disgraced and, umm … relieved of his duties – in a manner befitting the period. Bartok's loyal Commander Raiden (Owen) and the other followers are cast out of their homes. Watching Owen fall into a drunken slumber oblivious to society goes against all instincts we have for the noble warrior who is so dedicated to "The Code", but it is the most fun offered by the film outside of the two main fight sequences. Mr. Owen and his constantly furrowed brow seem a bit too high class for this film, only because everything else should be stamped with the "Acme" logo made so popular by Wile E Coyote. Despite the best efforts of the cast, the story lacks real emotion and the spectacularly elaborate plan for revenge is not given the attention it deserves … although I so was hoping someone would scream "Have fun storming the castle, boys!" The opening fight scene is well staged and leaves us wanting more, but the wait is well over an hour … screen time filled with bleak, gray scenes of not much happening. Gezza Mott's lead henchman (Ihara) does get a very spirited duel with Raiden, but the final showdown between Raiden and Mott is a significant letdown and a minor payoff for remaining hopeful through two hours. Reclaiming the honor of one's mentor may be a worthy cause, but the guts of the story are skimmed over and the quick cut explanations remind of the strategy used in "Ocean's Eleven" since the filmmakers believe movie watchers could never keep up with the actual details of strategy. So follow the code if you must, just know that a generic story and setting cannot be salvaged by stellar swordplay from Clive Owen.

First, I have to say that I did enjoy watching it. Perhaps it was seeing (spoiler alert!!!) the 2013 47 Ronin just the other day that gave the story a bit of a stale taste to it, though. It is pretty plain to see that the story follows the same historical template. The movie seems nicely directed and all the characters are well balanced. Peyman Moaadi really played the role of the emperor well but also Aksel Hennie did shine as the villain Gezza Mott. Especially the latter role might have easily been overplayed. The effects, props and makeup are well done, which is another point where such a straight forward movies, following a well-known story, may easily could have failed. We have good action and a solid story untainted by trashiness but also without any real surprise. There is the hero, Owen as Raiden, who (spoiler!!!) seems to become a drinker, which is however a scheme that is revealed only towards the last part of the movie. While it is nicely done, it is likely not come as a surprise.
