There are many laughs to be had and the acting and settings are on point enough never to detract you from the movie. Sean William Scott plays a relatble character that keeps you in engaged and laughing through the entire movie. The supporting cast is equally as fun to watch as the movie unfolds. Rob Riggle and the bother in the movie are fun to watch. I have seen countless movies that do not entertain half as much as this one. They touch upon issues that are faced by families in today's day and age. This should of been released in the movies as I wouldve paid to see it. Easily worth the price of admission. Keep up the great work SWC.

Great movie!!! This is a must see!!! Courtney Cox did an amazing job as her directorial debut. The acting was genuine and well done. I have to give credit mostly to the executive producers. I was involved from the opening to the end credits. The story line was original and entertainingly creative. I only wish Courtney Cox would direct more movie films. This movie had many celebrities that did not disappoint. All I can say is that the humor was real and relatable.
Pros: Everything!!!
Cons: Only in select theaters.
Watch this movie. You will not be disappointed.

Being a Sean William Scott fan I thought I'd watch this movie and boy am I glad I did. I was dubious at first as Courtney Cox was directing it but I gotta admit - she nailed it. This movie hits on many layers in life, some things you'll relate to, others you won't but you'll understand where it's coming from. It's a dark comedy drama with some smutty but funny humour that will either have you laughing out loud or looking on in shock. This movie is not only great acting, writing and directing but it has many hidden messages in it which makes you think about your own life, family amongst other things. Acting wise this is Sean William Scott's best movie. I cannot recommend this enough and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. You rarely wake up the following day thinking what a great movie you watched last night - well, this is one of them.

"My life had been a complete failure sure, but at least I could get my death right." Ted (Scott) has given up. His marriage has just fallen apart and he is left with only one option. He is returning to his hometown to tell off his old teacher, fight the man that bullied him in school and then kill himself. After finding the teacher, things don't go as planned and he starts to re-think his plan. This movie is surprising. It is at once funny, sad and entertaining. I expected this to be a very funny movie, and while it had its funny parts the movie is much more sweet and heartfelt that I expected. This deals with some very heavy issues, but in a way that it doesn't seem preachy or in your face about it. I did like this but it wasn't what I was expecting, not that that is a bad thing. Overall, a funny and heartfelt movie that wasn't what I thought it was going to be. It was better. I give it a B.

It's hard to make a good by-the-numbers film, but Courteney Cox rose to the challenge. I'm not being sarcastic. If anyone claims it's possible to make a BETTER film out this stuff, don't believe them. It's as perfect as it could hope to get.
This movie was probably inspired by the Robert DeNiro flick titled "Everybody's Fine" (2009), in which an old father decides to visit all his four children - whose lives are all mildly messed-up. DeNiro learns that his son #1 is not the big-league musician he pretended to be, and the other son is a drug addict; that his daughter #1, who is sort of a high-powered business-lady, has been dumped by her husband, and the other daughter is a lesbian.
As you can see, it's pretty much the same material, same territory. The key difference is that "Everybody's Fine" is soporific, while this new movie is mostly brisk and fun to watch.
As for originality, well, there's no hope for originality in a movie that tries its best to stay within the confines of realism. There just isn't. Blue-skinned aliens? A pointy-eared cape-wearer? A magic princess singing and creating a huge castle out of thin air in 12 seconds? Oh man, looks like none of these brilliant, Oscar-proved things will fit into out little suburban melodrama.
Here are some minor nitpicks I have for the movie:
1) Is Elisha Cuthbert the only girlfriend that our hero has has since moving out of his home town? How so? He's a handsome guy with a nice voice and even nicer personality. The moment he arrived "home", at least three chicks wanted to jump his bones right away. But not back in LA?
2) At his Dad's funeral (opening scenes), his mother is played by an actress in her early thirties. The boys are like 10 or 12. Which means that the mother is older than the kids by roughly 20 years - precisely the age difference one would expect, I guess.
Yet when Ted returns home 30 years later, his mother is played by Connie Stevens, who is 76 years old. Sean William the actor is 38. Which means that now Ted's mother is roughly 40 years older than him. You could say that maybe they tried to pass Connie for a 60-year-old, but no - Connie's lesbian girlfriend is played by Diane Ladd - who is EIGHTY. So why is the mom so old? Did she bear her boys at age 40, or something?
I suspect that the only reason why the mother aged so mysteriously was because Courtney Cox just really wanted to put the old girls (Stevens and Ladd) into her picture - to make the movie more chic and maybe to give the ladies a bit of work.
But for me, this considerably undermined the realism of the film. The mother is supposed to be the pivotal character in stories like this - in this movie, however, the character got all sorts of shortchanged. Maybe if Ms. Cox the director played the boys' mother herself (in the childhood scenes), then it would at least have been consistent. (Cox is 50 and gave birth to her daughter at 40. Would have fit the movie sweetly, age-wise.)
Overall, I enjoyed the film. I wish more screen time had been spent on the cruel math teacher (not enough of her cruelty is shown), and on Ted's high-school days in general - the bullies, the sweet blonde girl, his brother, their mother. Also the movie would probably have benefited from not having the gay-boy storyline at all - it's not bad per se, but makes the whole movie feel kind of trite and tired - "same old, same old."

I usually do not attend theater movies but have heard that most nowadays manage to include something for the LGBT crowd. I picked this one up at the library and, like many I have seen lately, the theme is the same: thirty- something or older has what used to be called a mid-life crisis (only happening much later) and adding the twist that one must avenge all perceived wrongs committed against you since birth. Your own pity party because you see just having a great job, wife/husband, children, home is not enough if you carry around what these bastards did to you in second grade!
And THAT part of the film is pretty good but then they hit you -- the well- worn boy-in-the-closet with the macho father and libidnous, deceptive mother. But hey, my sweet, tender uncle will understand.
And the, as the kid's love interest (they are in high school) they choose a black kid who has enough gang tatts and street swag to make it impossible to believe that he gets bullied the way he does. Impossible.
And of course the black kid is raised by his grandmother. It is her character that take most offense at from the writer's point of view. They gave this character the power to shut the whole film down.
The mother of the white boy in the closet (after he has gay-bashed his own boyfriend and sent him to the ER) asks the black grandmother is God loves homosexuals. The woman says that HER god loves everybody. Okay. Fair enough. But then they have her say that if her grandson is not good enough for Jesus, then Jesus is not good enough for her. Really? This one line does a huge disservice to Christianity and is brainwashing Christians against Jesus's teachings. You cannot "come to grips" with your child's homosexuality by saying well, God loves everybody and if God does not like homosexuality (which He does not), then God is not good enough for you. In other words, you choose homosexuality over God. There had never been any mention of religion before this black woman so I think it is disingenuous to have the black Christian condone homosexuality in the name of God. They could have just left God out of it. It is not God who hates you.

I'm a fan of Sean William Scott, which made the Courtney Cox directed film worth seeing. It's been a while since I've seen Scott in a movie. I think Goon was that last one. I liked Goon, and this was no Goon.
Courtney's directorial debut had some really good laughs so for that it is a good watch but you have to be patient. It does not happen off the bat it takes a while.
Somewhat a dark comedy about an empty looser who wants to tie up loose ends before he kills himself, it's actually very light and most of the good laughs don't comes from the dark humor but the toilet humor the glazes the picture. That makes the American Pie star perfect for the role but Cox under used that.
It feels Made-for-TV so it's worth seeing if you come across it while channel surfing (if people still do that)

I really was not expecting much from this film, be it to pass the time. However I was really pleasantly surprised and have to say this is one of the best movies I have seen so far in my life. Sean Scott is, cliché, I know, but like you've never seen him before. All the other actors played their part well and developed themselves into characters you care for too. The drama and humor also blend in really well, creating what I find a masterpiece sort of like 50/50, with the same idea of having a message but by bringing it in a not so dramatic way. The jokes are, although super-lame and inappropriate, very funny and help a lot to bring the whole movie into perspective instead of just the dramatic parts. All in all I would say everyone should really give this movie a shot, I am very certain most people will like, it is a fine gem indeed.

.... don't watch this movie!
Kyle Gallner - young and very promising actor - how did he get suckered into this mess? I must confess the plot could not keep my attention. Is it a comedy? There's no funny. Is it a drama? There's no drama. It's just a sort of still water story and by the end you hope they all drowned.
And the goofy brother, was that the comedy? The gay part, was that the drama? Maybe it would have been dramatic if Ted died (as he planed) in the end. But no, all is happiness and light. Typical crap.
I hope Mr. Gallner appears in many more flicks to bandage the wound left by this flop.
