Comedian and Saturday Night Live alum John Mulaney's first Netflix Special is a rock solid ride for any stand up comedy fan. John's hilarious takes include stories about his physique, his childhood and family, his girlfriend, his favorite TV shows, Ice-T in Law and Order SVU, and an encounter with a homeless person he met in New York City. His style is very much an preppy young man who speaks fast and fits in as many jokes as possible per minute. He doesn't really tell jokes, he tells stories with his own hilarious takes on them. The pace is fast and and nonstop. This special is arguably John at his best.

Mullaney has a unique charm and most of his material is what I would consider mild as far as offensiveness. He doesn't go too vulgar with it like most comedians and most of the topics are random things that have occurred to him in life but the way he says them is funny. I was laughing quite a bit at this special and I liked it even more than the one where he recovered from rehab. I can't think of too many particular jokes but the whole ride was good. It never felt dragged like some comedians trying to do an hour special with a half hour of material. That's a great sign for a comedian. I look forward to watching his next one.

"John Mulaney New in Town" is a bit of a disappointment. Don't get us wrong. John is a clever person who probably helped keep that Titanic of a show "Saturday Night Live" afloat after it hit that iceberg; and was sinking because Lorne Michaels could'nt recognise talent even if it were to bite him on the behind. John is a "clean" comedian. And by that we mean he doesn't rely heavily on jokes about sex and the associated body parts involved. Though he does rely on jokes about himself. But to give credit where credit is due: he doesn't seem to be angered by those jokes. Now we know why school teachers show so many videos.

I just discovered John Mulaney and have been watching his specials on Netflix. Each one was very funny but this one.. man... this was one of those laugh out loud, crying a little bit, routines. Especially the end. He saves the best for last. I have watched other Netflix specials and I nearly crack a smile at ouse of the stand ups.. but this guy is hysterical.

Excellent standup special. A traditional set that features many surprising one-liners and nuggets of wisdom while subtly integrating personal stories that span his entire life. In his first Netflix special, Mulaney really throws down the gauntlet and delivers a hilarious, inspired hour of comedy.

John Mulaney, a staff writer for Saturday Night Live, takes the stage in this Comedy Central standup show. He starts out pretty slow, talking about how people thought he was Asian as a child, and the audience is appreciative, but either they've been warmed up or there's some canned laughter in there. By the halfway mark, though, his pace of jokes has picked up. He's on a roll and he's pretty funny -- the laughter in the background still sounds canned, or at least as if the volume is turned up when he pauses for breath. Even when he tells stories about himself, about his period as a drunk, Mulaney does not vary his pacing much. Early in the show, a bit slower, later in the show, a bit faster. Although the stories are good and well told, they lack a sense of person that I prefer in a comic until the last one. I don't know if you will have the patience to wait for it.

I had never heard of John Mulaney, but he's part of a venue lineup that I have a season ticket for, so I thought I'd check him out here. He actually is a pretty funny guy, making self deprecating cracks about his youth and gayish good looks. It was also refreshing that he kept the use of four letter words to a minimum. Yeah, he throws an 'f' bomb in there every once in a while but it's not jarring like other comics who use it quite liberally. His routine includes stories about his lawyer parents, how mean thirteen year olds can be, how he'd get drunk and black out at parties he ruined, and some timely advice on how to get a script for Xanax. He throws in a slam at the 'Ocean's' movie franchise stating that they could never make one with women because they'd be gossiping instead of concentrating on the heist. Of everything he mentioned, that one didn't turn out to be prophetic at all, since "Ocean's Eight" came out in 2018. I wonder if he ever revisited that joke after seeing the movie?
