I really enjoyed the slow-burner that is "Introspectum Motel". Marcel Dorian delivers an introspective, moody, and atmospheric two-hander, set largely in a chic but desolate hotel. The dialogue was intriguing, filled with double entrees about "chasing mice", "the golden rule", and other brain-tickling metaphors. Also some great quotes - "F***k Christmas" was particularly good. The widescreen anamorphic cinematography presented in 2.35:1 on what seemed to be a modest budget, felt expansive and captured the interior spaces beautifully. There's a great twist approximately midway through I won't spoil here but is worth sticking around for.

This is a film about infidelity & revenge. There is nudity & a straight forward storyline. I found it very pretentious as the writers have the characters spurting out the ethical discussions of men and cheating in motels. It is almost as though the writers are expecting applauses from the viewers for this insight but they shall not receive any from me. It is far too preachy & borderline encroaching on misandry. Women can cheat too & ought to accept their part in this!
I found the acting from the male protagonist Philippe (Marcel Dorian) very distracting. He may have the looks but his acting range is somewhat lacking or limited. He reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger in that his lines delivery seems very robotic & perhaps wooden. Furthermore, none of the characters are likeable. Perhaps the writers did this to show that everyone is flawed but it made me not invest in any one.

Introspect Motel has got the reigns on multiple strong themes. Loyalty and trust. Revenge and fear, even tying basic human instincts into it. There are a lot of layers that the film peels off. Some are ripped off and some are slowly, painfully, rolled off. Great acting and kudos to the writer. It was awkward not being able to like any of my main characters by the time the film was over but like I said, each one of these people had layers to them which made for a very interesting film.

The line between love and hate is pretty thin, and this movie shows that in spades. Not only that, revenge and empathy are disparate emotions that are a toxic byproduct. From jump, it was apparent that Philippe, the philandering husband of the story, had no real emotion for his wife, and no love for anyone but himself. He is the embodiment of toxic masculinity, and is rightly played as a completely unlikable, almost irredeemable character. But he has something that allows him to have ongoing affairs, and that's when the intrigue begins. Meeting clandestinely for a pre-arranged tryst, is when Philipe's life becomes unglued. Not giving anything away, but starting here, there are some sexually explicit scenes and adult talk, and then the plot gets even darker. Introspectum Motel has a direct, straight ahead visual style and a story that takes risks, along with courageous, solid acting.
