I think this film could have had a lot more character if it were actually filmed and Carbondale and at SIU. I'm not really sure why the director chose to just use exterior shots of a few places in Carbondale.. For anyone who has ever went to SIU, the generic substitutions for filming locations really took away from the movie.

It's fine. Just an OK film. You watch it and instantly forget it. Perfectly disposable. You watch it and life goes on and you wake up the next morning and you're thinking about what type of jam you'll put on your toast. You're not thinking about this film. You'll probably only watch this film once in your entire life. And that's about all it's worth. It's fine.

A movie in which a few not very interesting things happen and then it just ends at a random point.

It's hard to do sweet without being saccharine (which, apparently, is a problem with Kate's book), but I think this accomplished walking that line. If you need to have an antagonist to enjoy a movie, this probably isn't for you. The characters are all likable. This isn't trying to win awards, and it isn't accidentally going to accomplish that, but if your desires are watching an enjoyable film with characters that you'll like, this meets that criteria.

I only watched this because of Gillian Jacobs (who is being woefully underused in Hollywood). But she's not enough to make this worth sitting through. There are a few moments that ring true (David's acknowledgment that he doesn't have the time to read the things that friends sent him) or are unexpectedly sweet (the B&B breakfast) but the pace is plodding, the characters are too weird or unlikeable, and the story is just depressing. I actually watched it a second time, to give it a chance, because the first time, I turned it off after half an hour. I suppose the most charitable way to describe the movie would be the way Jacobs' character describes her own unsuccessful book: "it could be better".

If you went to college and enjoyed it you probably wished you could go back for a weekend. That's what happens in this story, as a 30 something alumna visits her old university to talk about her new book. But of course everything is more complicated than that. A very well written story with great, believable characters. Highly recommended.

I loved it's awkwardness. To me, it's somewhat plausible. It cracked me up. I could identify with returning to a college apt. And hanging out for a weekend and revisiting some of the best years of my life. Then, going back to realidad.
