I was surprised at the low rating this film is getting on the IMDb. I saw it in Spanish and part of the humor was the language, plays on words producing compulsive laughter, not just from me but from the audience in general. It is hard to believe that it was dubbed into Spanish, the lip sync and the dialogue are so natural and realistic. I haven't seen the English language version, so I can't really compare. Could it be that Derbez and Hayek were actually dubbed into the English version?

This is really funny comedy. I nearly ignored it due to low rating, however I am pleased, I have not. I would recommend to watch it. The movie made me lough out loud, some scenes were really funny. Casting is also pretty good, as for grown ups and very young actors too. The story is predictable, yet interesting.

Delightful 2017 farce about modern Los Angeles mores and the macho gigolo caught in the middle of them. Eugenio (Eugene) Derbez, currently no. 1 Spanish-language actor in the world, is quick making inroads here in the USA with his long-running TV show EL SHOW DE DERBEZ and a prior 2013 film comedy. HOW TO BE A Latin LOVER is a supremely well-done farce with sexual zing and satirical zip, playing on this side of the border in English with a few Spanish subtitles. (Spoilers): Derbez is "Max," a middle-aged "kept man" whose aging wife dumps him after he scams one too many Rolexes and MacLarens out of her. He winds up homeless, depending on his Hollywood buddy Rick (Rob Lowe) from their pool-skimming, widow-seducing days at the country club, to find him temporary shelter. When that fails, he reluctantly winds up at the modest apartment of his sister (Salma Hayek), who has a 10-year old (Rafael Alejandro) to worry about, who very reluctantly takes him in. (If you don't suspect an UNCLE BUCK-type subplot soon opens up with the intellectual boy left in the hands of his semi-sleazy uncle to the consternation of his hard-working sister, you don't know formula.) A sprightly supporting cast melds some good old Hollywood ladies (Raquel Welch, Linda Lavin, Renee Taylor) with relative newcomers like Kristen Bell, Rob Riggle, Michael Cera and Derbez's own son Vadhir, playing Max as a 20-year-old. I think of this flick as more of a social than sex comedy, but if it's a sex comedy its PG-13 rating comes not from nasty language or sordid situations, as there are none, but from the exuberant way Max and Rick rock their Speedos. I happen to believe that the current sub-six rating here may have to do with the fact that early reviews came mostly from California, which tends to be tough on its own. More than anything, it's Derbez himself whose wit, ingenuity and intelligence save this well-endowed Hollywood romp from the dullness possible in its several tried-and-true plot streams.
