High on the Hog

Great to see Sid in anything, I think people forget about Spider Baby and THX1138 when it comes to his career. Sid looks good in this one, much better than 3 From Hell when his illness had fully taken over. Also great to see Robert Z'Dar and Joe Estevez. The film is a typical "homage" to grindhouse style film with the use of effects to give it a "drive-in movie" feel - jumping frames and grainy film scenes. Plenty of what we expect from B horror with all the trimmings. I struggled to get through this one though. I watched for obligatory reasons, fan of the man Sid, fan of horror and its subgenres.

Following the deaths of 5 people from marijuana, the feds trace the product back to Big Daddy's (Sid Haig) farm which leads to the inevitable conflict. The film is done as a 70s grindhouse without being grainy. It includes warnings for graphic scenes and missing scenes. It also shows things like fruit and vegetables as symbols for sex. There is a strip club involved so there is a generous amount of nudity, most without credit. Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Elle Church, Heather Harrison, + at least 3 more)

If you are in the mood for an award winning film, this ain't it. If you're in the mood for something different, silly and frivolous or in a 420 type of mood this may do it for you. Very artsy believe it or not, sometimes it plays like a music video but reels it back in and becomes a movie again. Just entertaining and watchable, mostly humorous but tries to get a little serious in parts like most comedies do for some reason. Light it up.

This movies story and plot is right up the alley of what a grudge movies is about. The way it was filmed and done is what makes this movie amazing. Kevin Lockhart did an outstanding job on this film.

How to review this?????mmmmmmmmmmmm, well its full of drugs, mostly homemade stuff, with a cartoon sized story and some ample and fruity characters.. its all about a khush farmer in the midle of nowhere united states, and all his friends and followers, including the sheriff +deputy and the bartending mayor. their opposition is a burnout federal agent and his rather sour staff of bosses and helpers. its a build up to the final battle between good and evil, including sex,nudity and hippie ayo muffin puffin weed killin atmosphere.how it ends ....? at first glance i wanted to terminate the try because mthe sound and socalled picture quality were awful, and the editing are extremely fast and shifting, like an angels farting dust on overdrive. but somehow i was lured into the business,and started to enjoy the characters so much that i couldnt stop it. the never mind , live high and live free feeling really smat over on me , i even had a few laughs and thats not bad considering the grumpy old man i am. just mentioning the score, that is well chosen and well dictated into the film, and the actors that are merely unknown to me ,does a pretty good job on the set. there are no sense of seriousity in this flick, so if you are a darn normal person who believes in the numberless amounts of amendments,then skip this. but its recommended from me, though with a low score

The cinematography ruined it for me. I almost made it to the 8 minute mark. I was looking forward to this movie after hearing about it and watching the trailer. It opened with good visual, shot with a better camera than most b movies and good music. They did a series of split screens as they rolled thru the opening titles and it got worse. In an obvious rip-off of Tarantino, ---they did the missing scene flash, jumping film, out of focus / squiggly lines things, cut into the film. It was cute in Grind house because they didn't overdo it. This movie overdid it. Made it hard to follow the dialog.I hope they release another cut without these distractions. Even the overly gratuitous, full frontal nudity couldn't save it for me.

Should probably put down the meth pipe if you're gonna do a movie. Super choppy crappy video, lame story. Darkly lit scenes. Might have been filmed on someones camera. I couldnt rate zero stars but wanted too. I made it about 15 minutes in.

There is just so much crap on the screen all the time. It's actually a very boring movie without the random crap every half a second. It makes it seem like the longest movie of all time. Sid Haig gives a great performance with several monologues throughout. It's ultimately a really interesting presentation of an old story. Illegal drug farming alerts the feds. Feds go in and everyone starts shooting. The final scene makes zero sense whatsoever. It's a stupid film for an enjoyably stupid watch.
