Hana and Alice are good friends and they do everything together. They go to the same high school and they go to school together. One day Hana falls in love with a boy who goes to the same high school. Hana deceives the boy and gets him. However, the boy loves Alice and Alice also loves him. What will happen to the relationship of the three.
I have a lot of friends but I don't have friends like Hana and Alice. They are always together and they say everything each other. They look happy and I think it is good thing. However friends sometimes become rivals. In this movie, Hana and Alice love the same man and they become rivals each other. I think moderate distance is important. We can share glad feeling or sad experience with our friends, but not interfere deeply. By watching this movie, we can rethink about the relationships with our friends.

So this ugly high school chick and her friend gaslight a clueless boy who they've been stalking for a while into thinking they used to be lovers, by telling him he has "amnesia" after he bangs his head in an accident. It's pretty stupid that he believes this for even just a second, but that's the story. Ok, granted he is sceptical, but still. Anyway, I did not really enjoy this film. I know the whole scenaro is supposed to be low-key humorous and quirky or whatever, but the characters just aren't likeable, especially that main girl and her manipulative ways. It gets a bit better in the second half, where a few genuinely heartfelt moments occur, for example when the other girl meets her divorcee father for an afternoon together, or when some real romance develops. But neither this family, nor the romance part is explored any further, leading to a pretty unsatisfactory ending.

Director Shunji Iwai is most comfortable chronicling the magic and heartbreak of high school years, and HANA AND ALICE emerges as an intimate, stylish, and often quietly amusing character portrait. The strengths of the story come from the chemistry of ordinary characters filmed in a loose narrative.
As a result, don't expect a fast-moving plot heavy on easy humor or bawdry. HANA AND ALICE certainly has its memorable quirks, but nearly all of Ieai's films, the narrative is naturalistic, the story fairly long (at two hours, fifteen minutes). As you might expect, the film-making itself is the strongest of its assets, with often striking photography.

i've seen several works of iwai..
and this one's the best part. for me, this are just feel good movie, brings you back to your past, and reminding you of those times you'd had crushes and how your life twists with a lie supported by another lie, and ending up with another till it all crumbles down on you when the truth comes out to be known.
though i think the boy was a bit dumb. but i would just have to say, i like the film.
cute portrayal of friendship threatened by a boy they both fell for, and at the end they still found ways to fuse back a friendship that was stronger than before.
i love the unnecessary imagery, like how the cellphone on the footbridge, or that astroboy on the window. senseless, no point on putting it but it just won't be the same without iwai's crazy style of filming.
i've noted several parts where you'd just feel cute on this, reminding you how stupid you were back in high school with all those silly crushes and clubs you've join just to get close to someone you've been staring at or been stalking for that matter.
it's just plain and simple. high school life, with a twist, i see those senseless imagery as part of your childhood passing you by everyday, as you grow old. as you lose your innocence on things, some other things would bid you farewell. an imagery represented as astroboy, i mean who in their childhood were deprived of a chance to enjoy a cartoon? if you were you won't see the sense why it was there.
but the best part i would say here, is the facial expressions done by yuu aoi and that dork guy, especially when they had a dinner date somewhere. it's kinda cute. you could see how the dork's guy position was kinda timid and the girl was trying to bridge something that wasn't there in the first place, it was all lies.
hahahaha.
but i'd recommend this film. i've seen it more than twice. you don't have to really see the film to understand it. it just wants to remind you of something you did in your life. it's plain reminiscing.

The plot of this movie has been done countless times in Asian dramas, two girls falling for the same guy. The direction can be sort of cartoony at times and over ridiculous for this type of movie, but something about it still makes the movie worthwhile to watch. It's one of those movies that your just going to have to go with in order to enjoy it. The story first starts out with lies leading to bigger lies and so forth, but that is just the surface of it all. Watching this was sort of like watching a Asian drama except instead of taking up few episodes this sums up the story in one movie. Some of the flaws is how it makes one of the character more likable between the two. If it made both characters likable than it would have been more interesting to watch. But this direction where it shows the different side of each characters was done in a pretty good manner and still engaging, so it's sort of passable. Yeah so the set up is ridiculous and not that believable, but than again most Asian dramas are like that. Some parts seem to drag on a bit, although very few. Also since there wasn't enough development between characters it would have been better if it elevated the relationships. And so it can give more of a reason behind the final decision of the male protagonist in the end. It didn't even show his final decision clearly, even if he isn't the main part of the story some of the audiences probably want to know his final decision after sitting through one of the focus of this film. Another thing I didn't like was the lead actor the guy that has two girls falling for him, something about him I found really annoying and irritating to watch. And no it's not because two girls were falling for him, it's just the actor. And it wasn't just his performance either, maybe he reminded me of someone I know in real life. All the main actor does in this movie is act all dull and tedious and make a awkward shock face occasionally. But he was a annoying character in this, but I guess it had to have someone that is gullible which is fine but he was just irritating and so boring to watch. It just would have been nice if he had some likable attributes or show attributes of why these girls would fall for him, plus it would make the movie somewhat believable. Well at least he wasn't a over cocky character which would have been way worse. The movie runs about 2 hours and it would have made the movie better if it had more development so it can answer the question why. Being fast paced is sometimes good and all, but it's difficult to buy into the chemistry between the characters because of lack of development. Despite some of the flaws besides the main actor in this movie, it had enough of it's moments to make it to around the 6 range. Especially the part where Yu Aoi does ballet which was the main highlight for me, I don't like watching ballet but that scene was nice.

We've all dreamt of being with girls like this and her side-kick
Thin girls Are the best. Thin girls showing skin (nature!) and not being trashy tattooed and having feminine long hair is the bestest. Amazing series and amazing movie as a follow-up too. Deserves so much appreciation it is amazing and the babes are definitely A+. A movie you can watch many many times.

They all seem to suggest this is a love story among the alm- ond ey ed but the film quickly pivots from that and goes into a different direction.
The oriental girls are pretty, but one involved in a love triangle is somewhat chubby ... guess who wins and who loses?
The ballet scene is quite impressive. Impressive actress (the audition manager and the blondies are also thin and attractive).
