I lasted an hour before turning off this film. And I am asking myself why? I love musicals and not just old ones but for instance Chicago was excellent and I am also "into" 50's and 60's music. But this picture lacked any appeal or charisma for me at least. Simple story: fat school girl type becomes a star at the local TV station in an era when race discrimination was rife. I can give this 2 rather than 1 votes as I heard a couple of catchy songs. But maybe because of the false way the story appeared to me or perhaps due to the way one of the lead actors playing his part in drag came across as so ridiculous, then again it could be because of non existent humor in the film, hence for any of these factors I was deeply unimpressed. So between a 'hit' and a 'miss'in my opinion the latter overwhelmingly prevails.

I was originally very worried about this movie let me just say...
1.John Travolta as a woman? 2.So many big names? 3.Musical based on an old classic? These were all of my concerns but let me assure you this movie was not only a relief at how good it was, but it was amazing!!! The movie was extremely well-casted (I can not say enough about how good they all did in their roles!!). The whole time you are watching it you are having a great time. Definitely had a great message and you really forget it is just a musical and put yourself into the cause!! A must-see for any musical fan! Nikki Blonsky is definitely my new hero and I hope to see more of her in the future as she just shines on camera.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable movie and the casting selection was excellent.
The music, songs, and choreography were all top notch. The lyrics were moving and I really felt stirred, especially when Queen Latifah was singing "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and "I Know Where I've Been".
Michelle Pfeiffer was super as an aging beauty queen living vicariously through her daughter. John Travolta was brilliant as Edna. Christopher Walken and Amanda Bynes were also excellent choices for their characters.
It was funny, heartwarming, and had a message that is still important as we fight for equal rights for ALL Americans regardless of color, race, or sexual orientation.
