After a rape, a bowling alley is plagued by a series of grotesque murders. As terrible as the rape revenge slasher films it tries to live up to. It's disgusting and repulsive but worst of all, it lacks a brain. The rape and violence is there for pure titillation. The acting is the most offensive thing about the film. Gamble is not only fricking awful, he also insists on shouting every line, making the film difficult to get through. Some of the deaths are rather entertaining, mostly due to some decent make-up and gore effects. Still not worth the time or effort.Plus, there was never really enough bowling. I kind of get the feeling this film was made up as it went along.

Well, I just finished watching Gutterballs.
To set up this mini-review I'll start by saying that Ryans previous movie, Live Feed was enjoyable. However it did have quite a few problems that really hurt the overall movie...the acting was sub-par on most counts, the script wasn't the greatest and some of the direction needed improvement. Don't get me wrong, LF is a fun little movie for genre fans So, did Ryan correct all these problems? Is Gutterballs better than LF? The answer is mostly and definitely.
Gutterballs is a throw back to the older exploitation flicks with a good helping of Troma-esquire fun.
Firstly the overall acting is much better. Alastair Gamble plays the ultimate bully boy...and does a great job in particular. The rest of the cast do either passable or above average as far as acting.
The script is a huge improvement...sure its far from perfect, but there are some great one-liners...again its quite Troma in that respect (oh and I mean the good Troma flicks). Nathan Dashwood as The Janitor gets some funny lines, and delivers them very well.
The direction again is much better. The overall look of the film is quite good, despite the low budget.
A special mention has to go to the soundtrack...the 80's music adds a lot to the flick IMO.
Alright...what about the plot? The gore etc? Well the plot is really a quite simple slasher one, though is perhaps not as obvious as you may think. It moves at a good pace, but really ups the killings towards the end.
OK, is it shocking? Well, as a seasoned horror fan, there certainly is some eye opening moments. We get an extended multiple rape scene, male and female nudity (which becomes very graphic at certain points), some very inventive and nasty deaths (with some great FX) and mutilations that may leave you squirming.
Gutterballs succeeds in its mission. It brings back the memories of old school exploitation but is a lot of fun at the same time.
Recommended to horror fans who like a bit of rough from time to time....and who like a laugh.
8/10
PS If their were an award for "Most creative costume for a Killer", I'd vote for Gutterballs....its freakin' awesome :-)

There is an alternate dimension where the 1980s and 2000s meet, and Ryan Nicholson ("Live Feed") opens that world up to us in "Gutterballs". All the classic archetypes are here in the bowling alley. And after a brutal rape, everyone will come together for one last night of bowling. There will be spares, strikes, gutters... and pure carnage, as blood flows free like Pabst from a Milwaukee tapper.
The tone of "Gutterballs" is unique. In some sense, its an homage to older films. The 80s feel is there, the DVD itself spoofs the cover of "Happy Birthday to Me" and the menu spoofs "Maniac". But it's also a comedy of sorts, with some of the dirtiest one-liners and comebacks you'll ever hear. Lastly, it's non-stop gore and over-the-top offensive cinema. Plenty of sex, violence and sex mixed with violence. There's absolutely no way this will ever receive a theatrical release and Blockbuster probably won't carry it without ten minutes of cuts, which would make the film worthless.
Even from the start, you know you're in for a treat. The opening shot features bowling pins, calling to mind such bowling classics as "The Big Lebowski", "Kingpin", and that cult favorite "Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama". We get disco and 1980s music, very short skirts, a transvestite, plenty of bad "ball" jokes and a smoke machine that knows when people enter the alley. This film clinched the feel of trashy 1980s videos.
Have I stressed the blood, gore, violence and language? There is going "over the top" and then there's "Gutterballs". Aside from such rarities as "Necromantik", I've never been treated to so many mutilated bodies and sexual depravity. One scene, which blows my mind, features a couple engaged in a certain oral sexual act... and the killer doesn't shy away from using this to his advantage. And they show it... all of it.
The transvestite comes to a bloody end after answering "I bleed from my heart; everyone judges me and nobody knows me" when asked if his new female parts will work. And my absolute favorite scene features a trash-talking ball waxer that taunts bowlers with vulgar language and insults. I was cracking up pretty hard. All this while being treated to countless tracks from Loverboy and other treasures. Another reviewer commented that "the 80s hits throughout the film will leave you scratching your head as to how director Nicholson scored the rights to so many classic tunes", and he's right -- that was precisely my first reaction. It's an amazing onslaught of pure rock.
I had only two concerns with the film. The theme gets a bit old, even for such a short film. After the "ball" jokes run out, the bowling theme seems to be in the tenth frame, but the film just keeps playing. Also, like many other commentators, I felt the rape is a bit extreme and makes the audience uncomfortable... it's a good successor to "I Spit on Your Grave", but the long scene breaks the otherwise humorous flow of the movie. While offending me is certainly not easy, I think this might be the first film to see "the line" and cross it without looking back. If that was Nicholson's goal, mission accomplished.
I have to say this was a good film for anyone who loves gore. Faces ripped off, genitals mutilated, shotgun blasts to the head... I can't think of any film in the past decade that even comes close to this level of intensity. Some of the parts are beyond offensive, so please don't watch this with children around or anyone you're trying to impress. This is the sort of film that causes divorces. But with those precautions in mind, you'd be missing out on piece of film history if you passed up on "Gutterballs".

I think we just found the new master of horror cinema folks, and his name is Ryan Nicholson. His first film Torched, was an excellent short rape/revenge film with brutal and very realistic scenes of violence. Then his second film, Live Feed, I thought was fantastic. It was a great throwback to Grindhouse splatter films. Now we have Gutterballs, the best horror film of 2008. If your looking for gore, then you got it. Gutterballs featured some of the best gore effects I've seen in a long time. This film is for true horror fans and gore hounds everywhere. All the actors did a great job, and it had one heck of a great 80's soundtrack. One of the best horror films of the year and of the decade.

I approached Gutterballs with caution; as while the premise sounded interesting enough, I was not a fan of director Ryan Nicholson's first feature film 'Live Feed'. Gutterballs seems to take inspiration from slasher flicks such as Intruder and Stage Fright, in that we have a group of people locked inside a small location with a maniacal killer, and mixes this with a gleeful eighties style and a bucket of blood and gore. The result is a film that is not for everyone; but a dream come true for fans of exploitative horror, as Gutterballs is completely unflinching in the way that it portrays violence, and it's actually very refreshing to see someone still making films like this with all the watered down horror coming out of most modern day studios. As the title suggests; the film focuses on a bowling alley. We are introduced to two rival teams and the animosity between them soon becomes obvious when they start scrapping within the first few minutes of the film. Cut to the next night and their game is intruded by an unknown bowler calling himself 'BBK', and the bowlers start being picked off one by one.
Gutterballs is a film that really doesn't hold back at all; the gang rape scene within the first twenty minutes is liable to get more than a few backs up pretty quickly, but it actually turns out to be just a taster for what is to come as we are treated to a barrage of murder scenes and various body parts are mutilated. Despite all the blood and guts, it's clear that the film isn't meant to be taken completely seriously either; and parts of it are absolutely laugh-out-loud funny, which is nice. Ryan Nicholson ensures that the film is entertaining throughout and Gutterballs never really slows down or becomes boring for a minute, which makes for a very fun viewing. Most surprising of all is the fact that the film is very professionally done - the acting is more than above average for this sort of film, and the gore - while ridiculously gratuitous - doesn't look completely fake. The killer's identity will be obvious to anyone familiar with the genre, and not too hard to guess for anyone that isn't; but the film does have more than one twist up its sleeve and the ending itself is a blast. Overall, I don't expect Gutterballs to receive universal praise, but I would think that it will get respect from genre fans (who also have fun spotting various tributes) and I would certainly rate it as one of the better horror flicks of this decade. Recommended!

When I first heard of GUTTERBALLS, I thought what the hell is this, but now I have seen it - GUTTERBALLS kicks serious ass!!! It's a brilliant kickback to all those 80's horror flicks such as INTRUDER, MANIAC, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME, and definitely I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE
I got to be honest though this is a brutal film, and is definitely not going to be for everyone, it has a rape scene which rivals the one in IRREVERSIBLE. But as a true horror fan I absolutely loved it, great death scenes, gore by the bucket load, nudity and sex (almost a porno in parts)
All in all a great effort from Ryan Nicholson, all I can hope for is he makes more films, and that he sticks to the roots he used in this film, although I'm not sure the UK will see this film...not in this version at least, so make sure you go for the US UNRATED version, when it comes out.

What the hell a 5 point rating doing here? This movie is a trash movie where Buckets of Fake Blood is used to give the horror and gore feeling to the movie but that was so overdone that it started to feel nauseatingly idiotic and stupid. Completely unnecessary Sex Scenes, and doubly unnecessary gore in a Movie Plot which over-over-stretched (the whole bowling setup does not give much room for the story).
I really could not understand how anyone can actually write, produce, direct, act, edit and release such a movie? It is a plain wastage of time (and money) to watch this movie. The movie lacks originality, credible acting, bad background music (that completely fails to create and hold the fear factor), third rate makeup, poor camera works (watch "them" if you want to know what a camera angle can do in a horror movie)and last but not the least completely nonsensical reason for the killing. Though I tried hard but I could not find a single thing to write positively about this movie (even the girls are not that well toned and had pathetic figure to flaunt).
However I know that there are people who will still dare to watch this movie and may later find some stupid justification for their crazy decision yet I am writing this review to try and save people from the horror of watching this movie. And If I can save one poor soul than My job here is more than Done, Amen!!!!

Another "run down to Hollywood Boulevard and round up the whores, give them drugs and money, and yell ACTION!" movie. If you are a total sick pervert, your father is Satan and Hell is your destiny, then this is your movie, enjoy.
Full nudity in this movie, unless you get the edited version. No perceivable acting, a completely depraved and disgusting story from end to end, nothing redeemable, no reason to ever see it.
This film qualifies not as the worst movie of the year, or worst movie ever, but one of the worst movies in the Universe.
If you would actually want to see this sick garbage, it is YOU that needs great and epic mental help...you should be committed forever and they should throw away the key.
