This is one of the most subtly done comedy/documentaries ever. I cannot begin to describe how funny it is. Werner Herzog is a passive aggressive genius. How he kept a straight face while filming this movie is beyond me. He should be on the World Poker Tour. He systematically destroys any perceptions of Treadwell as an "bear expert" and layer by layer, reveals the true nature of Treadwell's demons. It is horrible, beautiful, and above all ridiculously funny to watch. It's a real life Waiting for Guffman! I have seen it 3 times and I find something new every time. It is also the most quotable movie since Napoleon Dynamite.

My Rating : 8/10 We're a complicated species and Werner Herzog understands this and as the narrator of this documentary it is refreshing to hear his thoughts in conjunction with Timothy's. The contradiction is clear and one can step away and look at things more objectively. It's a fascinating documentary albeit silly and crazy at times thanks to the main character's personality which doesn't come across as mature but I believe his heart is in the place and genuinely loved his work to protect his beloved yet murderous friends.

Werner Herzog's film about Timothy Treadwell, 'Grizzly Man', is a bit of a mixed bag - not just showing some of his video footage of the bears and foxes he lived among, but also discussing the violent attack which led to his death, mauled and eaten by a bear alongside his girlfriend. Treadwell treated the wild animals as friends and humans, but it isn't clear whether he was just naive or plain stupid when it came to dealing with bears. Herzog presents him with some sympathy, but does ultimately sit on the fence - as good documentarists should - about his true feelings about his subject.

Greetings from Lithuania. "Grizzly Man" (2005) is such a simple documentary, yet such a warm and clearly made that you just want to give a hug to this movie. Superbly directed by Werner Herzog, it tells the story of Timothy Treadwell, legendary "grizzly man" about whom i to be honest haven't heard before. The story itself is presented very clearly, with very simple yet absolving and clear narration. Overall, shame that "Grizzly Man" wasn't at least nominated for best documentary Oscar. But don't let that stand in your way of seeing this movie, it is a superb one.

Much of this film is pretty standard, and it seems to follow basic conventions of documentary filmmaking. However, there's an added layer of depth and exploration, one that is entirely composed because of what Herzog is going for. You can sense his intrigue and fascination with his subject all throughout the film. What should be noted is that while Herzog makes it a point to actually tell us the ways in which his worldview is different from Timothy's, he still does so in a respectful, mannered way. He seems to respect Timothy and that comes shining through, he seems to even look up to him in a weird way for what he does. There's no judgement at all, and instead Herzog comes across as yet another viewer just interested in this story, lending the film its poetic nature.

The documentary is well made, but I must say that I have mixed feelings about it. Even though that I am glad that I learned about Timothy Treadwell, I feel like he wouldn't have wanted it this way. Much of his video footage shown in the movie felt extremely personal and I am quite sure that he never meant it to be published. To me it felt like an invasion of his most private life. It felt disrespectful. And if you say that documentaries are meant to be this way, I disagree. It is legitimate to make a movie about an important person, but not to expose him completely. But of course, this only my opinion. Because of the reason mentioned above, I don't recommend this documentary.

The guy clearly had issues, and made stupid decisions. Was way out there. Broke the laws.. But never the less it is an interesting story and well made documentary.

I have so far resisted peer pressure to watch more than the first episodes of Tiger King, but I can still say with confidence that Grizzly Man is vastly superior. It's truly incredible the amount of empathy Herzog is able to generate for such a misguided, kooky person. It's all the more impressive to see the contrast between Timothy Treadwell's sentimentalized view of nature with Herzog's (and my, for that matter) view that nature is indifferent and chaotic. To mix these two contrasting philosophies with what are, in some sense, two different films--Treadwell's footage and Herzog's narration and interviews--make for something truly moving and insightful.
