I love horror films and I'm always looking for the next best story, creepy, disturbing, or scare factor. However, 2020 has been absolute garbage for horror since the anticipated films like The Conjuring 3 and A Quiet Place II, and several other solid ones have been pushed to 2021. But, to my surprise I came across this film and read reviews beforehand but ignoring the negative ones as I commonly do.
I enjoy found footage based horror films if they're done right (and without excessive camera shakes). This film was surprising for me. It's creepy and disturbing in some situations mixed in with the reality of Los Angeles.
I would say for a found footage based film, it was well done for what it is. I've seen some pretty crappy found footage films but the creepy/scare factor was lacking and camera stability was terrible. The story behind the elevator game was disturbing, sort of like a modern day version of "bloody Mary", except in an elevator while floor-hopping. This is worth the watch without having too much expectation; just enough to feed your curiosity.

One of the weaker found-footage horror flicks, as opposed to what Google results may tell. The scares are cheap, the effects are lackluster, the performances way over the top, and the entertainment quotient negligible. The concept did have potential; if only they'd focused on the little details about the hotel than just moving from story A to story B with no solid end result. While it doesn't give you a headache, the usage of background score in this film was pretty poor.
The lead actor Matthew Solomon plays a vlogger named Mike who's hell-bent on gaining more followers to the point of risking his own damn life - the character has been sketched in an extremely obnoxious and annoying manner and therefore, as a viewer, I didn't care for this guy's lethal attempts at popularity even when there was a reveal midway that his wife's pregnant. The supporting cast is weak too, but what mostly sucks here is how non-scary this flick is. Do me a favour and watch 'Host' instead.

I started watching and got interested because I liked the 'youtube style' of filming but the lead actor can't carry the film. There are too much key scenes were he is overacting. The scary parts are so forced scary and don't really work.

Overall I really enjoyed the locations they used. I'm a SoCal boy so I always have a biased on la movies with the history you can actually look up. The lead in this film was annoying but he was playing the typical YouTuber who wants fame. Ultimately the fate of the cast is in the air and we don't really get an explainer at the end. Nonetheless, I was in the zone looking for any little spooky stuff hidden in the film. Solid popcorn film. Not going to rewatch tho

This movie scored points with me on the basis of mainly what I was looking for: Did I get some good scares out of it? My answer was definitely yes, there were some well thought out places in the movie that were genuinely scare-worthy.
One thing this movie had that others that are "found footage", or whatever you want to call them, that also appealed to me, unlike many other movies of this genre, was that the investigators actually reviewed things caught on camera, whereas several other movies (Paranormal movies come to mind), the people setting up cameras to catch strange occurrences don't bother to review the footage of what happens while they're sleeping, which, oddly enough, is when most activity happens in these types of movies.
This is not really a spoiler, but will make you scratch your head. The ending seems to have just been thrown together and ruined for me what I considered a very decent movie.

Eager to know what happened, the history of a controversial vlogger is researched by a mysterious stranger through his last-known uploads which feature him and a crew documenting the morbid history of a local hotel and coming across the disturbing guests that are haunting the building.
This was a pretty solid and enjoyable genre effort. One of the strongest features is the usual assortment of setups that are in play here with the backstory of the area and what's going on at the hotel. The backstory about the haunting of the hotel and the various urban legends that are told about the guests that have befallen the guests told about the hotel work rather nicely. In conjunction with the eerieness of the hotel layout and its general design, it sets a fantastic location for the creepiness to come. That comes into play with the series of incredibly tense and chilling encounters they have during their stay. With the first clue coming to pass from the elevator game they play, this one features plenty of chilling and highly creepy encounters where the group starts getting caught up in the ghosts that live in the hotel. From believing they're simply benign only to be proven otherwise with their physical incidents, getting emotionally and mentally upset by what's happening to them or the surreal descent into the basement which is some of the most terrifying scenes in the film, this section is impressive with quite a lot to like here. These are the film's positives while there were a couple of issues here. Most of the film's flaws here stem from the supposedly hilarious and humorous antics that he partakes in which are neither funny nor original. Making gags with prop hands, fake heads or body parts, constantly causing discomfort in his friends or loved ones and generally being a nuisance to anything and everything around him in the name of trying to be funny just causes him to be off-putting and irritating. That these antics aren't even that clever or unique as character traits as well don't help this and makes for a troubling time getting into the film, especially with the long intro that gives us a chance to see this in action quite frequently. The other real problem to be had here is the seemingly disjointed tone at work throughout the film. While most of his antics are designed to be funny and fail miserably, the idea that so many of these scenes that feature hauntings taking place against them or other strange events that are freaking them out yet two seconds later the group carries on like nothing's wrong. It happens frequently after many of the incidents and has a completely infuriating feeling once they keep behaving irrationally to what's going on. Lastly, there are way too many endings here where it could've done one or two instead of where it ends, making it drag on too much. These are what hold this one back overall.
Rated R: Graphic Language and Violence.

I watch a lot of found footage films so admittedly I like them. This is one of the better ones, but definitely is full of the standard messes riddled with the genre. The acting is good, the scares are there, and the plot is intriguing due to the real history of the hotel. If you like the genre you will enjoy it. My main problems were the plot holes and the overtly contrived plot, but that's to be expected.

This was so terrible. Lead actor is like nails across a chalkboard from the first minute and the supporting cast is almost as bad. I was looking forward to this found footage for the last couple years since I heard rumblings about it. I very rarely turn movies off, especially if I pay $3.99 for them on demand, but this was one of the few. Needs to be shot into the garbage can from the 3 point line.
