From the producers of "Once" and "Sing Street", "Float Like a Butterfly" is a powerful, timely story of a girl's fight for freedom and belonging. In a gender-reversal of the classic film "Billy Elliott," 15-year-old Frances must fight for the right to fight back. Raised in roadside camps in rural Ireland, Frances wants to champion her people inside the boxing ring and out, like her idol Muhammad Ali. But society is determined to break her spirit and destroy her way of life. And her father, once her greatest ally, is too defeated himself to imagine anything better for his daughter. But Frances was not born to be broken. In the mother of all fights, she must dig deep to find in herself the Champion her father once knew her to be.

This film was written and directed by Irish director and playwright Carmel Winters. The plot focuses in the story of an Irish traveller girl who wants to become a boxing champion , just like her role model Mohamed Ali. I really liked the story, it truly is heartwarming. The subject of this film is very important because it is about girls achieving their dreams and it teaches everyone, not only girls, that following one's dreams is not just something you see in fairy tales. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery too. The Irish landscapes are magnificently shot with beautiful Irish-inspired music. All this creates a particular atmosphere : this film takes the time to tell uou things, quietly, the story slowly flows and I think it is a good atmosphere for a road trip film. And for all those reasons it is for me a well-written and well-directed film. This movie also has an incredible cast, with a really close to life acting. I particularly enjoyed Hazel Doupe's acting, she is beautiful in her way, not a classical beauty, and she wonderfully sings. "Float like a Butterfly" is also a film about family relationships and hiw difficult and wonderful it can be at the same time. It pictures a strong father daughter relationship, with ist ups and downs, in a very realistic way, and I was really touched by this little family. I guve it a nine out of ten, it is a beautiful and inspiring film. If you have yhe chance to see it, don't miss it ! 🦋

The film is about a young Irish girl. She is a gypsy. She loves Mohammad Ali because she loves boxing. She wants to meet Mohammad Ali but she can not because her family is poor. Her father was imprisoned for many years and her mother is dead. My opinion about this film: the cast is good. Actors give us emotion. I put six stars because the film is beautiful but the story is long for verry little acting. I expected the girl to meet Mohammad Ali for her to fulfill her childhood dream. All in all, the film hs a beautiful history, that changes from Hollywood movies. It lachs suspense though.

The film was directed by Carmel Winters, the story is about a girl who loves Muhammad Ali, she lives in nomandic camps and wants to box, but her father thinks that boxing isn't for girls. I was confused when I saw this film because I expected a movie more based on Muhammad Ali, don't expect that! It's a strong movie with a big family relationship. I highly recommend it because of the beautiful photography and landscapes that lead you onto a realistic journey in the heart of Ireland. I really liked the cast to, Frances, the main character is a touching person, who shows a world where you have to fight in life and I think she is very inspiring! It's a movie that shows the different sides of Irish people and how difficult the gypsies are treated by the others and I think it's a good think to show it in this beautiful way. To conclude, don't miss "Float like a Butterfly", if you like strong movies with exceptional landscapes and to discover this traveler's life. I put 8/10 stars because it was also a slow movie...

Float like a Butterfly is an Irish movie released in 2018 and directed by Irish film director Carmel Winters. This movie is about a 15-year-old girl, named Frances. Her mother was killed during a fight with the police. Because of that fight her father was sent into prison for years. During that time, Frances was brought up by her grandparents and other members of the nomadic community. But in rural Ireland, gypsies are often stigmatized and rejected by society. Frances loves boxing. Like her idol Muhammad Ali, a great boxer, who fought for the rights of African Americans in the 60s and the 70s, Frances wants to defend her people inside and outside the boxing ring. As her father returns to freedom, he doesn't want to accept his daughter's will to box. Together with Frances's little brother, who doesn't act as masculine as his father would like him to, they go on a road trip. After difficult times, they all come back to their departure point. Frances's father finally accepts to let his daughter fight for the pride of the gypsy community. Frances wins the fight, and her father recovers his pride by punching the policeman that killes his wife in the face. Then the movie ends. I enjoyed this movie. At first I didn't know what to expect. Was it gonna be a boxing movie, or just a movie about female empowerment ? Well, now I can say it's a bit of both. It isn't very clear when you read the plot, but the main theme of this movie is the relationship betwwen a father and his daughter. Of course female empowerment is also important, because Frances has to overcome a lot of gender stereotypes to reach her goals. Boxing is a good idea and brings originality to the movie, but it doesn't actually play a very important role in the story. Talking about acting, I really liked the acting of Hazel Doupe, the young actress, who plays the role of Frances. She really has a lot of skills. Since Frances is the main character of the movie, you can really say that Hazel Doupe's acting holds the movie together. I also liked the realism of the movie. I went on to the Internet after I had watched it in order to do some research about the nomadic communities's lifestyle and I was amazed. A lot of the information I found was actually in the movie. It shows the dedication of the film crew to make their mvie as realistic as possible. The movie also says a lot about the stereotypes about the gypsy community. Carmel Winters didn't hesitate to speak about numerous inequalities at once in her movie, and I think that's a good thing. The only thing i criticize in this movie are the stretched gaps. Sometimes the situation changes a lot within a few minutes, and you don't really know what happened. But that's not a big problem. To sum up, I really liked this movie because of the acting, the original plot and the important themes it speaks about. A must-see !

The story is about a young gipsy girl, fanatic of Muhammed Ali and passionate about boxing . But she is a girl and her family don't agree with the fact that she can do boxing, for them it's a sport for boys... I liked this drama movie because it shows the difficulties to be a woman in 1960 , and the fact that the main character, Frances, lives in a family of Irish Travellers gives examples of the difficulties that a woman may encounter when she comes from a minority. I also liked the fact that she is passionate about a sport and determined to do this sport despite her family's disagreement . What I liked the least was violence, for example when the father punches his daughter and when she gives him back the punch ; I found the plot absolutely surprising because it's a repetition of violence and I didn't like that . It's the same thing for the "beach battle " , I think that this moment is overated but it is essential to the movie because it reveals Frances's strength when it's to defend her community and prove that she is powerful . I like the acting game, it was very realistic and natural. But there is another negative point : the music and the sound effects for that type of movie. On a scale of 0 to 10 I give this film an eight because it's a great piece of film making !

Float like a Butterfly is an Irish film produced by Carmel Winters. The main character is a teenager, Frances (Hazel Doupe). She was raised as a traveler in rural regions in Ireland. In the future, she wants to be like her idol, Muhammad Ali. She's fighting not only against her "enemy" inside the ring, but also against expectations of society that could never be able to imagine a girl boxing. The film participated in the International Film Festival in Toronto, and in 2018, Float like a Butterfly won the Discovery Prize. In my opinion, this film is not the best, not the worst I have ever seen. I like the idea of telling people about Irish travelers, because I have never heard much about them. I also find the film interesting because of the way it shows how judgmental people are: society refuses the nomad community and in spite of the fact that women still fight for their rights, some people expect them to stay all day long in the kitchen and to take care of children. The film is showing that women can also make their dreams come true. On the other hand, I wouldn't say that the film is as realistic as it is presented. The world we live in is sometimes a really cruel place and a teenage girl from a poor family with a lifestyle that is not at all matching the expectations of our society can reach her goals and make her dreams come true only with a big amount of luck. Another thing I fould a little bit disrupting were the stretched gaps that made me lose myself in the story. To sum up, I enjoyed this film and I would also recommend it. I liked the acting and also the beautiful rural Ireland. It is well worth seeing also because of the music making the film more realistic. The only thing I would change is the description of the film. Before seeing it, I read a few reviews on Internet that said the film focuses on the reality of Irish travelers. I would rather say that it matcher more the feminist ideals than the real world. That's why it didn't match my expectations. But I still give this film a 8 on a scale of 0 to 10.

Float like a butterfly is an Irish drama film, directed by Carmel Winters and released in 2018. The film stars Hazek Doupe as Frances, a young Irish Traveller girl. She idolizes Muhammad Ali and aspires to become a boxer. I really enjoyed the movie. The plot is absolutely touching. The acting is true to life and the music is rich. But it is rather slow at the beginning and there are too many strechted gaps in the strory. Also it has a surprising ending because it is unexpected. On a scale of 0 to 10 I give this film an 8. It is a great piece of film making. It's a beautuful portrayal of Traveller people. I highly recommend it. Don't miss it !

In 2017, after 500-plus years, the Travellers of Ireland were finally recognized by the Republic as their own ethnic group. The films Snatch and Into the West are also about Travellers, but this masterpiece is the most realistic regarding how they lived in the 1960s. It's a bit different today, but not much (see above mentioned films, or take my word for it because I lived among Travellers in Ireland for a year). All that aside, if you've not yet been honored to see Hazel Doupe act, then this is your chance. Not only is she an exemplary artist, her natural beauty which deviates from the common female aesthetics of our own day like a persimmon differentiates itself from the common apple or orange is well worth viewing--and she is in nearly every scene. I only give a full 10 stars to superlative work, and this film is nothing less than perfect.
