Throughout the film you are constantly thinking..."I know what happens next" and unfortunately it proves you right time and time again... The sentimentality is overdone and the few decent comic lines in it are all in the trailer... The stereotypical London idiots with their terrible script are a distraction from the beautiful scenery in Cornwall....

What a shame this film has been made. There was a real opportunity to make a film about community, dedication, loyalty and character with music at its centre. Instead we got this second rate predictable rom com which could have been overlaid over any background. You learn nothing about the nature of Cornish life and nothing about the group of ten men who make up the band. There is a cursory cliched description of the 'leader' of the men and his dad, which really only serves to inform the love story. Even the music of the real Fishermen's Friend doesn't get a proper look in and is hardly used throughout the film. The script is stilted and awkward, with endless references to some local history that no one in real life would ever use! This film is a total waste of talent, resources and time.

I really enjoyed this movie, based on a true story of a group of Cornish singing fishermen who made it big in the chart against all odds. This quintessentially British themed movie targeted for a largely British audience delivers the goods, it comes from the same genre as Four Weddings and a Funeral or indeed the recent Fighting With my Family.
Whilst this movie may be lacking in the fireworks of a car chase, organized crime, drugs and gratuitous sex, it is a solid movie in every respect. With a tight script, brilliant camera work, fine music, great scenery, and plenty of jokes, it has much to offer.
You might find some cringe-worthy scenes but they are only fleeting in their embarrassment to everyone. I would single out Daniel Mays, who played Danny the musical agent from London, for special praise, he trod the line of comedy and pathos, romantic lead and nerd so well against a backdrop of dour old seasalts.
This movie gives you exactly what is on the tin, no more and certainly no less.

This film was perfect .
This film was the perfect love story.
Well written comedy drama based on real events - wide london boy a fish out of water discovers hidden talent in a sleepy fishing village
You'll laugh , you'll cry , you'll cheer , you'll leave happy - perfect 10/10 film.
Intertwined with an unlikely love story with Danny punching way above his weight with the stunning Tuppence daughter of leader of the motley crew - a touch of Romeo and Juliet .
A David vs Goliath story of unlikely success against all the odds .
If you liked the film SAVING GRACE on which the TV series Doc Martin was based you'll love the beautiful rugged Cornish fishing village setting .
If you loved the humour , comradeship of THE FULL MONTY a band of brothers - who's charm and talent doesn't come from the instagram photoshopped world of the perfect aesthetic syco product boy band
This was a film about real people in a real setting without ambition but where success is deserved against all the obstacles
Superb .

It's one of those films that has it all, a gentle but evenly paced introduction to the characters which gives you a chance to get to know them and all the fruits of the storyline are not obviously laid before you "the viewer" as is with alot of such films embarking on similar themes, as to the success of a film for me personally I put them into classes "one watchers" & "add to library" this definitely falls into the "I would watch again" category

By its own admission, 'Fisherman's Friends (2019)' is only 'based on a true story' in the loosest of senses, making a point of pointing this out during its credits via an unusually strong disclaimer. Of course, this is absolutely fine - indeed, it's perhaps better to use real-world events more as inspiration for a piece's premise than to claim absolute authenticity while delivering something that, in many cases, couldn't be further from that - but it does make you wonder why many of the issues that typically plague 'true tales' appear here, and why the filmmakers didn't make use of their apparently larger-than-usual dramatic license to 'fix' (or reduce the impact of) some of them. Furthermore, the flick sticks to convention past the point of pure predictability and into the realm of bizarre detriment, as a very late and contrived 'all is lost' moment unnaturally and unnecessarily drags its duration way beyond its seemingly perfect finish-line. It's not as though this totally ruins the thing, but it does feel completely artificial and take the steam out of what was becoming a fairly enjoyable experience. In general, the feature does exactly what you'd expect it to but it does it well enough, for the most part, that you don't really mind. In its second act, it becomes unexpectedly entertaining as its down-to-earth characters and overall upbeat, 'feel-good' nature start to win you over. This is in stark contrast to, as I mentioned, its laboured final act and, even, its rocky start. The ending itself does a decent job of bringing everything back together and putting a smile on your face, but it is severely dampened by what's just preceded it. As a whole, the flick isn't very deep. The core group isn't really rendered all that well because only a select few are given any real character - never-mind an actual name in the credits - and, even then, most of their development is pretty basic. Most of them are more than watchable, though, and their often humorous inter-group dynamics are certainly believable. Pretty much the entire thing is an easy watch; it's never really boring. It's never exactly exciting or emotionally engaging, though. It also doesn't really say anything, other than maybe making a broad statement that people are more important than money. The best thing, honestly, is probably the music, provided by the real Fisherman's Friends. Now, that's got character. 6/10.

"The feel good film of the year" the dvd box promises you. Unfortunately I cannot agree.
The problem with lots of these films is that they follow such a predictable storyline that you can easily predict all of the 'twists' along the way, and we've seen it all done before...and better.
Despite the stellar cast this was a dud.

A great, feel good, heart warming story. Beautiful part of the world and toe tapping shanties. What's not to like.

We were looking for a film to watch at the local cinema, read the overview and thought we would give this one a go. It pretty much turned out exactly as we expected - Not a 10 out of 10 film, but a feel good movie that was well worth watching. I wont go into details and risk a spoiler but it is a good mix of drama and comedy. Plenty of laughs, a bit of romance and a nice story that is based on real life events. If you fancy a night out with a movie that's entertaining and an easy watch give Fishermans Friends a go.

I am sure there are plenty of very interesting stories behind some portion of "one hit wonder" song phenomena. This either isn't one or is atrociously told by this film which decides to simply veer into mindless "Rom-Com "when the main premise runs shallow.
It is clear the makers know this film is a dog as well, since the endless repetition of the same phrases in so many user reviews tells us 3/4 of the positive ones are FAKE and shilled. If the reviews are fake so almost certainly is the rating.
