Review: This movie started off quite good and Russell Crowe's performance was brilliant but I got quite bored after a while and the whole back and forth into time element, started to get on my nerves. The ending was also pretty weak and I personally didn't think that it had to be 2 hours long. I did love the chemistry between Jake Davis (Russell Crowe) and his young daughter Katie (Kylie Rogers), and the emotional beginning did touch me but I lost interest in the older Katie (Amanda Seyfried) storyline. Her relationship with Cameron (Aaron Paul) was doomed from the start, because she kept on randomly sleeping with anyone she could get her hands on. With that aside, Crowe was truly brilliant in this movie, and when he was having seizures, it really did look real. After losing his wife in a fatal car crash, while Jake was driving with Katie in the back of the car, the successful writer becomes depressed and suffers with seizures, which are uncontrollable. His doctor suggests that he should be hospitalised for a while because the car crash had obviously taken a toll on his life, so he sends Katie to live with her aunt Elizabeth (Diane Kruger) and her husband William (Bruce Greenwood). After 7 months in hospital, he is finally released, and he attempts to get his daughter back, which upsets Elizabeth and William who have grown close to the little girl. They try to gain custody, because Jake is running out of money and it still pretty unwell but Jakes lawyers manage to find out some information about William, which makes them drop the case. The movie then jumps in time and shows Katie later on in life, struggling to hold down a relationship and helping a young girl who is battling with her past. After sleeping with many men, Katie finally settles down with Cameron but she still finds it hard to to fully commit. There is a big gap in the film, so you don't get to see Katie through her teenage years but you do get to see how the relationship with her father has taken its toll in her latter years. The concept actually wasn't bad but it seemed like it was going on forever. Jane Fonda, who plays Jakes agent, should have had a bigger role in the film and the time periods became a bit confusing after a while. When the whole film comes together at the end, I didn't really get the moral of the story but it's still a watchable film because of it's emotional content. Watchable!
Round-Up: Russell Crowe, 52, really did prove why he is a highly rated actor in this film but his movies have been pretty poor of late. The big budget, A New York Winter's Tale, flopped at the box office and Noah, The Water Diviner and Broken City, just about broke even. His performance in Les Miserables became a running joke because of his poor singing and questionable accent and the Man with the Iron Fists was just a really terrible movie. Ridley Scott's interpretation of Robin Hood, also didn't go down with critics so it has been some time since Crowe has made a decent movie. He's due to star alongside Ryan Gosling and Kim Basinger in the Nice Guys, which is due out later this year, so that should, hopefully, bring him out of the downhill slump. This movie was directed by Gabriele Muccino, 48, who brought you, The Pursuit of Happiness, Seven Pounds and Playing for Keeps and he has also directed movies for the Italian market. He certainly brought out the best of Russell Crowe in this film but it really didn't have to be 2 hours long, even though he was covering a large time period.
Budget: $2.5million Worldwide Gross: $4.8million
I recommend this movie to people who are into their dramatic movies starring Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Aaron Paul, Diane Kruger, Bruce Greenwood, Jane Fonda and Octavia Spencer. 4/10

Where do I start. This movie got me tearing and still tearing when I'm done and out of the cinema. I read previous reviews especially those who didn't like the movie (gave one or three stars out of 10) and I think the reviewers' problem is that they didn't get the character played by Amanda Seyfried. It's not that Katie Davis hated guys, it's because she was very heartbroken by the death of her father, she shut her heart and end up so used to not feeling anything (i.e. "void", as she called it) and got into the habit of occasional sex in attempt to feel something.
There are some minor problems with the movie such as unexplained physical illness of Jake Davis, and such-an-angelic Katie Davis' childhood character that at times seems too good to be true. Other than that it's a beautiful script played by extraordinarily convincing actor and actresses.

This movie really got me thinking about what priorities are in life. It got me pretty emotional too because I've identified myself in Katie but in Jake as well. It's hard filling up the void inside yourself and you do wrong actions to make it right. You know so well it's wrong but there's nothing you can do about it, you have to live with it until you figure out your whole life, literally. Everyone's got their own ways of dealing and avoiding but they are rarely working. We don't see help coming right at us because we are too occupied with our problems, that's what makes things worse. When we manage to confront ourselves, we realize that we have been missing out great things that were surrounding us the whole time but we were unable to see it. I love it how the movie has bigger meaning and a real impact on my standings. I realize how selfish we are (including myself) for not cherishing the moments we have, just like Jake did, because you never know when it will be over.

"You're my Potato Chip, You and nobody else, okay?"
You get an allergic reaction when watching an over-sentimental film? Or are you utterly devastated after seeing an emotional tearjerker? One good advice. Avoid this one because this is the most pathetic movie ever made. Collect all movies with Weltschmerz as a central theme and you can be sure that it's used in "Fathers and daughters". A painful loss. A mental illness. The fight against mental demons. A combat against relatives so you can bring up your daughter. A professional failure first. A grandiose victory afterwards. Scars from a past with all its consequences. And finally one finds the strength to close this painful chapter. It's all in there. Ad nauseam.
So be prepared for a hellish ride full of emotions. Personally, I enjoy watching this type of films once and a while. Just to realize that my life isn't so bad right now. But this was a bit overdone at a certain moment. And on top of that, the entire film is additionally divided into two periods in which the whole story takes place. Sadly, by the absence of something crucial in the present, the clou regarding the past is already given away. What really pisses me off is the fact that filmmakers sometimes think the public is stupid. Jake (Russell Crowe) has a brain trauma because of the accident which leads to sudden attacks. But that was clear to me already after the first incident. It wasn't necessary to give several demonstrations of his misfortune. Ditto about the psychological trauma the adult Katie (Amanda Seyfried) suffered from. That was also evident after her first one night stand. Her transformation into a slutty seductress so she can get laid for the umpteenth time by a total stranger, was also unnecessary.
Russell Crowe miraculously fits perfectly for the role as the suffering father. He has to face a series of setbacks. The loss of his wife, a brain disorder, a series of bad reviews and a sister in law who blames him for the death of her sister and who's willing to do everything in order to adopt his daughter (because he isn't be able to raise her). You would get strokes and nervous breakdowns for less. The most tender and lovely rendition is played by Kylie Rogers as the very young Katie. So charming and angelic that I sometimes would like to adopt her myself. She mastered the whole range of filial emotions effortlessly. And Amanda Seyfried as the adult Katie had some magical moments as she tried to help a young girl named Lucy (Quvenzhané Wallis), also a traumatized young girl. The most loaded part, full of drama, was reserved for Diana Kruger as the embittered sister who tries to keep her anger under control by consuming large amounts of alcohol.
There were a few things that bothered me terribly. Firstly, I thought the sentence "Men ... they can survive without love. But not us women" was rather derogatory towards the male sex. In a split second we were reduced to unfeeling conquerors. This quote on the other hand is cited by Diana Kruger. So it actually fell pretty ridiculous. I still don't understand how come the adult Katie (who has to be over 32 years at that moment) is still in college. And the way the legal jousting between Jake and William (Bruce Greenwood) resolves, is too ridiculous for words. Granted, it was a chuckle moment (resulting in some malicious pleasure and a firm "Yes") but then again it seemed like a simplistic conclusion of generally lengthy legal proceedings. The story-line and ingredients that were used in "Fathers and Daughters" seem to be typed on Jake's typewriter. Also antiques and stale. Ultimately this corny movie has the same characteristics as a bag of crisps. Easy to digest and not very memorable. The only difference is, that after such a bag of chips, sometimes I'm yearning for more.

In this overly sentimental melodrama, "Fathers and Daughters" traces the relationship of a caring, single dad and the young daughter who idolizes him. Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried both deliver earnest performances, yet the film fails to elicit a profound emotional response in the viewer.
One of the problems with the film was the constant flashbacks between the adult daughter trying to make her way in the world as a child psychologist-social worker and the little girl growing up with a single parent. Two villains are introduced in the form of an aunt and uncle, who attempt to wrench the child away from her father by going to court.
As the film unfolds, it was clear that the goal was to produce the feel-good, romantic experience of a Nicholas Sparks film. Unfortunately, there was far too much pop psychology, wherein the young woman suffers from intimacy dysfunction to the degree that she cannot have a "normal" adult relationship. Much of the tone was smug and unconvincing. Human character is shaped by multiple factors with nothing inevitable in the way that is depicted in this film.
The sign of a good romantic movie is that one would like to view it on multiple occasions. Sadly, "Fathers and Daughters" is a one-note, one-view film that turns into a "pity party" for those who are incapable of communicating their true feelings.

This film tells the story of a successful writer who loses his wife in a car crash. He struggles with mental health and physical health issues, in addition to the challenges of taking care for his eight year old daughter.
The story is surely going to touch many people, as it contains most tear jerking elements that exist in the world. A little girl losing her mother, a writer who struggles in every facet of his life and a woman who is afraid of love. I can relate to some of these characters, and I have friends who are just like some characters in the film. The characters appears to be like ones in real life I connect with them and I can feel their pain. The presence of many great actors and actresses is also a big bonus. I wonder if this is a film based on a true story.

Greetings from Lithuania.
Fathers and Daughters" (2015) is a movie with superb cast, one of the best ensemble of actors in recent memory. All of them did a good job. Directing was also solid, as cinematography, settings. I liked the story, which is kinda beautiful and inspiring. But on the other hand this movie needed a better script. The are like 4 stories in this movie actually, but not one of them is very engaging. Script was sometimes cheeze - i wanted to roll my eyes over the screen, but great actors managed to say some lines with straight faces. It tries to have some moving moments, which unfortunately didn't moved me. It is a very good looking movie and while it lasted i enjoyed, but after it was over i know i will forget this movie very quickly, i doesn't have lasting impression.
Overall, "Fathers and Daughters" is a nice and enjoyable movie which could have been great with more tight script. It's running time 1 h 50 min can be sometimes draggy, because some story lines like with the little girl which finally gets adopted didn't work. But overall this is very nice movie for one evening. By the way i was shocked when i learned it was rated R. Trust me there a lot of movies which should have been rated R instead of this one. This is sometimes beautiful movie but kinda empty.

I enjoyed this drama. There is nothing very new about the story and it is predictable but in good way and you just want to see this stellar cast act it out. 25 years ago a father and daughter cope after the mother is killed in a car accident. The mother's sister played by a beautiful and very classy looking Diane Kruger and her slimy husband played by Bruce Greenwood (remember the nasty guy in Double Jeopardy? In present day the daughter grown up as a social worker has commitment and promiscuity issues. There is story isn't very ground breaking but with such a starry cast and an actual story with actual drama tragedy romance love infidelity forgiveness it makes a compelling watch. Some people may find things old fashioned and soapy - but I think that is unfair. There is nothing wrong with having a proper resolved complete story for a change. Russell Crowe is a bit old to be father to the young girl but he acts well - his seizures are convincing. Amanda looks prettier and more alluring and less bug eyed than usual. She makes a potentially unlikeable character sympathetic. It's great to see Aaron Paul him in a romantic role as her love interest. There was an indication in 'Breaking Bad' of how affecting his passion would be in a role like this. Jane Fonda is well cast as a publisher. Overall the cast is great and elevates this beyond a Nicholas Sparks level. Tip: The story is old over 2 time periods about 25 years apart and going back and forth between them. Flashbacks: Don't get confused - the flashbacks are when Russel Crowe appears.

Okay I got it. Director Muccino must have found a profitable vein and he's exploiting it in a rather shameless fashion. The script, very much like in "Summertime" "The Pursuit Of Happiness" and "Seven Pounds" is an expositional tear jerker with characters who explain themselves with every line of dialogue.
Russell Crowe has his first seizure within the first few minutes of the film and then he has others, I don't know how many but it felt like 400. So at the end we have a 2 hour movie out of a tiny idea swollen by an infinite series of cliches that includes, I'm not kidding, a musical, romantic montage when the young lovers first meet. The extraordinary Janet McTeer has one scene and the extraordinary Jane Fonda, one or two. So this must have been an expensive production and in fact Fathers and Daughters has everything , cast, looks, settings, everything except real thought and original ideas.
