I am a Woody Allen fan. Perhaps those who aren't will like "Fading Gigolo" more than me. His role is secondary, about half his lines aren't even trying to be funny, and the other half that are trying, aren't anyway. There may be 2 or 3 laughs tops in the 90 minutes of this movie. As for the dramatic part, it doesn't work out very well either, because John Turturro and Vanessa Paradis are both miscast and unconvincing in their roles; Turturro also confuses "low-key" with "catatonic" in his performance, he looks as if he's miserable that he has to be there (even in a menage-a-trois with Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara!). He only smiles once, in the closing shot of the film. There are some nice shots of Brooklyn in the autumn, but all in all "Fading Gigolo" must be one of the worst films Woody Allen has ever been associated with. *1/2 out of 4.

John Turturro who is the director and lead actor in Fading Gigolo, is cash-strapped. He plays Fioravante who works at a bookstore run by his friend, Murray (Woody Allen). The bookstore has to shut shop, and both Murray and Fioravante are in need of money. At the same time, Murray happens to visit his dermatologist, Dr. Parker (Sharon Stone) who expresses a desire in a ménage à trois. Murray suggests that he has a friend who might be willing to lend his services for the same. When Fioravante comes to know about Murray's schemes, he takes off.
Eventually, Murray convinces Fioravante to play a gigolo. Dr. Parker and soon her friend, Selima (Sofia Vergara) are introduced to him. Later on in the movie, he falls in love with a widow, Avigail (Vanessa Paradis) who is recovering from the death of her husband. All the elements of a fine dramedy are there in this movie. It has some funny dialogs that are characteristic of Woody Allen movies.
The acting is top-notch, especially John Turtutto, Woody Allen and Vanessa Paradis. Liev Schreiber is funny as Dovi, a cop who is in love with Avigail. The movie deals with a sensitive topic with the right amount of maturity. However, one feels that there is scope for more humor in the story that is not fully exploited. Also, at times the movie drags, and this mars its overall flow. There are some scenes that could have been avoided that serve only to distract from the main story. The finale of the movie is where it scores heavily. All said and done, at an hour and half Fading Gigolo doesn't go awry many times.
The background score sets the mood for many scenes in Fading Gigolo. The locales go along with the theme of the story. All the actors play their parts extremely diligently, and the movie is well-directed by John Turturro. Some viewers might find the tempo a bit slow, however, those who can stick with it will find it satisfying. There is nothing too jazzy about Fading Gigolo, and yet in a subtle way it manages to entertain you, only just.

It's practically impossible to talk about a film in which an unprepossessing writer-director not only casts himself improbably as a babe magnet but selects as his co-star the writer-director Woody Allen who also had a penchant for writing and directing films in which he cast himself as a babe magnet. John Turturro goes one better by casting himself not only as a babe magnet but one who the gorgeous babes in question are more than happy to pay him a stud fee. This is Art imitating Art and it's difficult to believe a word of it. Bizarrely he casts the French pop-star Vanessa Paradis as an orthodox Jewish widow, a role that virtually any Hollywood actress could have played better and ironically although I have always had an aversion to Paradis I was nevertheless thoroughly chagrined when Turturro has her choose the wrong guy - Lieve Shreibman - a character with all the charisma of a gobbet of phlegm and sinister to boot - he not only spies on Paradis he also organises a team of Jewish strong-arms to snatch Allen off the street in the interests of jealousy, and to top it all, a character in whom Paradis has shown not a scintilla of attraction throughout the film. Watchable - just about

I have just watched John Turturro's "Fading Gigolo" and I am feeling very light-hearted and comfortably happy...
I don't know if Woody Allen has any part in the scriptwriting of this movie, but the art piece has his watermark for sure. The open-minded style, the straightforward and honest performance and most of all - the tenderest look into human relationships and morality - this is what you will get from "Fading Gigolo".
Turturro is presenting us the rather comedic, but also touching story of the flower shop worker (and a lover for hire!) Fioravante, the book shop keeper (and a pimp!) Murray and the devoted Jewess (and a loving female soul!) Avigal. They are all mixed up (along with the predators Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara) in a touching story about the oddities of life. There is very little exposition and I think that this is one of the best qualities of this movie. Woody Allen is impressive in his typical role once again. This guy is a talker and he can really get your attention in a funny and enjoyable way. I personally loved the constant transition from comedy to sensitivity. The intelligent storytelling is complemented by beautifully selected music pieces.
The intentional nod to Woody Allen's work is outspoken. The ideas behind the character of this fading gigolo are very simple, but true and appropriate for our time of loneliness and emotional distance. The gentle and understanding Fioravante for me is a personification of the simple pleasures of life that we as ordinary people tend to forget and bypass. Maybe if we focus more on mutual appreciation and take it easier we could show our own inoffensive charm. Tenderness and enjoyment are more than welcome together. I watched the whole film with a genuine smile. You should definitely take the time to enjoy it as well!

If the parts played by Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara featured instead, say, Kathy Bates and Imelda Staunton, then there might be some way of taking this film seriously. As it is, no way! We're expected to believe that Stone and Vergara would a) need to pay some guy to have a threesome with them, b) that Stone, playing a Dermatologist, would arrange such a tryst through an elderly client, c) that they'd settle on John Turturro as their ideal man, d) they'd pay him $1000 apiece. If it's not already obvious from that set-up, Fading Gigolo is pretty much a Turturro homage to Woody Allen. Beyond being set in a world where sexy women chase after nebbish guys, the humour, the tone, even the soundtrack is all typical Woody. So it's hardly surprising that Woody is there as the pimp, virtually performing an homage to himself. It's all beyond strange.
