I saw Evan Almighty recently at a screening in Charlottesville, Virginia. I was expecting a trifle of a summer comedy aimed mostly at children given the PG rating and all the animals. Instead, what I saw was an extremely funny and even touching movie. The writing was crisp, the pacing non-stop, and the visual effects were first-class. There's plenty of physical comedy by Steve Carell, particularly in his montage as a novice boatwright, and lots of one liners from Wanda Sykes and funny animals to keep you consistently laughing out loud. The real surprise is that between all the laughs, there are valuable messages (without being preachy) about human stewardship of the planet, love of family, and how prayers are actually answered. Adults will love this movie as much as kids.
