"Drive" is an instant Cult-Classic, thanks to amazing visuals full of artistry, a superb cast led by a subdued yet determined Ryan Gosling, music sets the mood painting contrasting forces, poetic violence and mystery, all in inexorable destiny. Masterfully directed. Can't Miss Movie.

I hated this movie, mostly because it could have been so much more interesting than it was. It was very stylized (a la Tarantino), which is memorable in its way, but ultimately there was so little "there" there. I thought Ryan Gosling's performance was a real tour de force - you never doubted that his character was all the many, many things that he revealed himself to be. But the intriguing relationships, between Driver and Irene, and especially between Shannon and Driver, and even between Shannon and Bernie, were introduced and then abandoned for a trite gangster plot that's been done about a thousand times before, though (minor spoiler alert) the shot of the 2 men's shadows at the end was almost worth sitting through the gruesome endless violence - this movie had more corpses littered about the stage than a Shakespearean tragedy. I was enthralled during the first half of the movie, but just irritated by the second half, and so disappointed. Is that all the filmmaker wanted to say?

It's hard to describe this film with any other word than classic. It doesn't have a retro look, but it does have a bit of a retro feel. It also has a brilliant build up of suspense, facilitated with poignant music, insanely smooth camera work, and a perfectly subtle script. Winding Refn is becoming one of my all time favorites quickly - as is Gosling, who stuns here, speaking more words with his eyes than his mouth ever comes close to. The soundtrack, as has been said, is brilliant, although it may take some people repeat viewings to catch why. All in all, probably the best movie going experience I had this year/ EDIT: I am upset, but not surprised that the Oscars chose to nominate emotional flubber (e.g., Incredibly Loud) over a real film, like Drive.

Watching this film, about half an hour in I thought I was watching a romantic. No real action of note and the plot was heavily centred around this "relationship". After the half way point it seriously ramps up in action and becomes a fantastic film to watch. A lot of unexpected gore and well shot action scenes and car chases in abundance. Beyond that, the crime side of the plot is fairly average nothing confusing, which is good. The personality of Ryan Gosling is what will really turn people off/on. For me, I personally enjoyed it. His long silences and introvert personality I really related to and fitted the character and plot well. Maybe a few flaws within this. For someone that doesn't often speak, he manages to bag dates with this woman (I need to learn how he pulls that off). But, that's really me nit picking. Overall though I really enjoyed this film. Once I got past the relationship section and more action started kicking in it really was good. 8/10 from me. Would recommend.
