The old romantic comedy tone is really off putting. It makes the acting look weird and unnatural. So are most of the dialogues. And to be honest, Zellweger and McGregor don't fit the part. Sarah Paulson was annoying as usual. And the musical moments were hard to watch. If I remember correctly, critics hated this movie, and who can blame them? It's awful.

This is a romantic comedy set in the early 1960s in New York City. It is done is the style of the romcoms that Doris Day starred in during the 1950s and 1960s. This is a pale imitation of them. Although the stars Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor have acted very well in other films, they're awful in this. Zellweger and McGregor can't decide whether they're paying homage to Doris Day romcoms or making fun of them.
I don't know who the intended audience demographic for this film was. The large majority of film fans in the 21st century aren't into this style of comedy; those who are wouldn't enjoy this mediocre copy of them. It's too tame and bland to be a funny parody and too badly made to be a good imitation of them.

Ewan and Renee are absolutely dazzling in this fast-paced, highly-entertaining romp based on the classic sex romps of a forgotten era. The Doris Day-Rock Hudson comedies are probably the best remembered among the genre that gets an uncanny update in DOWN WITH LOVE. Every detail is painstakingly re-created from a genre that was sexy, stylish, chauvinistic, and ultimately playful. The clever wordplay and dirty little double-ententes never end, and the actors have marvelous fun with every last scene. DOWN WITH LOVE is more fun than any "modern" romantic-comedy has a right to be. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan wish they had half as much fun as this!
