Is the story background the Kashmir conflict or the North eastern conflict? Since both these conflicts are so different, It has caused lots of confusion.
The conflict in this movie is not about Kashmir, Its about the conflict in the North East (Assam Region). They speak Assamese and several mention of the North east. However, they do go to Ladakh (This may have caused some confusion along with the allegory to Sufism).
If this was about Kashmir, then its a terrible depiction since the Kashmir conflict is primarily due to Pakistan and Its terrorists operating in Kashmir Not home grown resistance (There is that part too...but they are very small). And Pakistan loves to portray the Kashmir problem as an indigenous groups uprising. This is more like the home grown resistance from the Indian state of Assam and that area.
In India where there are so many terrorist bombs going off in different places so frequently, people in India have little patience for being sympathetic to the alleged "victims".
In India, everyone is a minority. A Tamil person has his/her own grievances, so does a person from Benga and Punjab and hundred other "Victims". So when you have a nation that is so diversified and yet pluralistic and democratic, where different ethnic groups have their representatives in the Parliament, if any minority has an issues, they need to use that legitimate process to address their grievances. So the rest of the minorities (The rest of India) are not going to be too kind to the "we are the ONLY minority and we are the only one with a Problem and hence we want to secede" groups.
for me, this movie was a total WTF! No wonder this movie failed miserably in India.
But if you watch this movie like its happening in some far far away land and not based on any real world conflicts, then you may have a movie here.

The movie has an amazing direction. The feel and intensity of the characters are alluring, the characters are portrayed with perfection by the artists. I love the idea and how it was filmed. The movie captures the beauty of North India along with the pain and conflict between the people there. It's ask a question whether love is the solution of conflicts or not. The people hung to their past, is it easy to forget the past and look for the future with hope. The movie has depth and a wonderful amalgation of love, obsession and war.

A must watch bollywood movie. Top notch performance from everyone. Be it the director Mani Ratnam, the actors Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala, or the music by AR Rahaman

This is the second Bollywood film I've watched (the first being Lagaan--which was also spectacular!)...I actually watched these two films because I like the composer's work (A. R. Rahman). I was also very captivated with the dancing on the moving train sequence for "Chaiya Chaiya."
The acting by SRK and Manisha Koirala was perfection, with so much range of emotion and highs and lows. I'm glad I happened to see a YouTube comment about the ending (not a spoiler, but at least it made me more prepared for the realism of a tragic tale).
It is not often that I feel this type of depth and range of emotion from media experience. One other time that I felt this way was when I finished reading Anna Karenina. These human experiences through well-told stories are unforgettable in a very artistic, and somewhat intensely private way (since we all experience movies/books/etc. in our own way).

POSSIBLY THE MOST SELF-INDULGENT FILM BY AN INDIAN DIRECTOR. PATHETIC STORY, FULL OF HOWLERS AND GIGANTIC LEAPS OF IMAGINATION (NOT TO MENTION GEOGRAPHICAL IMPOSSIBILITIES). ATROCIOUS HAMMING BY KHAN AND THE USUAL WILTING-FLOWER PERFORMANCE BY KOIRALA. RAHMAN'S SCORE IS REPETITIVE. BUT MOST OF ALL, IT'S THE DIRECTING THAT FAILS THE FILM. SOMEBODY PLEASE TAKE MANI RATNAM TO A SHOWING OF "ROJA" SO HE CAN RECOLLECT HOW TO MAKE GOOD MOVIES.
