Congo The reason humans teach gorillas sign language is so they can tell them to release the human child unharmed. Apparently though, the apt ape in this thriller is only hostile towards female competition. Primatologist Peter (Dylan Walsh) takes his talking gorilla Amy to Africa after she has a prophetic dream. Along for the ride are an electronics expert (Laura Linney), a philanthropist (Tim Curry) and a local guide (Ernie Hudson), each with their own motive. Eventually Amy's drawings lead the party to a cache of diamonds that have been protected by a race of vicious grey gorillas for ages, including a powerful blue diamond. With a laughable premise and even more pathetic special effects behind the man in the monkey suit, this adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel is a low point of 1990s cinema. Lastly, why teach a primate sign language when it's easier to get them to text? Red Light vidiotreviews.blogspot.ca

A pale remake of so many films or books about the Mines of King Solomon, the lost valley and the wild African nature that has no real existence except in our phantasms. So the film is just a poor piece of entertainment in which everything is so artificial that we see the zippers on the four sides of all the gorillas. I just wonder if the human beings are not the same with four zippers, one on each side. That's what modern technology and digitalized 3D virtual reality is producing day after day and they just edit it into a long feature and they call it a film. One more miracle of that modern age. Although "Congo" rushes itself (uncomfortably) at the beginning, it slows down and takes its time in the middle to let us catch up. I found the characters pretty interesting and the action sequences to be very original and inventive. There were some very awkward scenes - including acting and action sequences - but that didn't bother me too much. A very fun and extremely gory movie that I'm surprised got the PG-13 rating.

I love bad movies: Showgirls, Plan 9 from Outerspace, so on. And this movie fits right in. Don't believe anyone who tells you this is good film. It's downright awful. Tim Curry's accent moves from German to Portuguese to Hungarian. There's a person in a gorilla suit who is supposed to be able to communicate using a glove that interprets the ape's sign language. There is a scene with a killer hippo that moves around a river like a Great White Shark. There are people hopping up and down Mt. Kilimanjaro as if there were escalators installed on it. This thing is laughably ridiculous. So ridiculous I was rolling on the floor. It is totally implausible. I loved every minute of it.

This movie must be appreciated for what it is- an excellent B-movie with a great cast that chews the scenery and spits out preposterous dialogue. The Cast has all of the credentials. Tim Currey, Ernie Hudson, Delroy Lindo, Laura Linney, and Joe Pantoliano are all capable of fine dramatic work. That isn't what is called for here. Bruce Campbell and Joe Don Baker set the tone for this campy-action-comedy. This is a good excuse for good actors to flex thier overacting muscles. Lots of fun

Based on Michael Crichton's novel, film is about a research/rescue team sent into the African Congo, and led by Dr. Karen Ross(Laura Linney) that includes Dr. Peter Elliot(Dylan Walsh) who has with him a talking gorilla(due to a new technology in her larynx). Tim Curry and Ernie Hudson play devious characters who are also along for the mission. They are sent to locate the first research team that had apparently located some large and pure diamonds that are worth a fortune to the company funding the expeditions. Complicating matters are the instability of the local government, and a rumored mythical race of apes said to live deep in the jungle. As it turns out, they are no myth... Lightweight adventure yarn is watchable to a point, but too silly and outlandish to succeed, though it remains innocuous.

Or show and tell - literally. Now this has quite a few cliches attached to it and some dialog choices may not be the best. But just the cast alone is quite incredible. And I'm ot even talking about the short appearance of Ash (Bruce Campbell) of Evil Dead fame. That is a bonus for me and anyone else who loves/adores that Dude. The story itself is predictable with gullible characters all around. But also quite violent for a mainstream movie. I could more than handle it, I am just warning potential issues some may have with the spikes in effects/violence this includes at times. This is not Monkey Shines mind you! But you have to love animals in general - at least that's what I think. The diamond here being the McGuffin of course, but you need an excuse for an expedition, don't you? And once you are on the trip, the entertainment and tension can start.

What made Congo so bad was where they made a major deviation from Crichton's book. Rather than a brilliant individual making big mistakes under pressure, we got a psychotic madman for a boss.
