This movie is not brilliant as people seem to think. I was hoping for more but was disappointed to find that this movied relied on the tried and true formula of white trash humor. For some reason people eat this stuff up. Admittedly there are a few well written parts but it is overshadowed by the crust.

Kevin Smith is a comic genius. The guy made a semi-autobiographical film about a store clerk and his buddy and it was one of the most original as well as inexpensive films to come along in a while. His writing is just so smart and sophisticated that he just always has us laughing our asses off. Th film was shot very cheap on 16 mm with non professional actors just friends of Smith. It created a cult audience for Smith and created two of the funniest duo of characters to come along in film. They are like C3P0 and R2-D2. One talks way too much and the other never speaks. Well, except for about 2 lines. The characters are obviously Jay and Silent Bob. Clerks is one of the smartest movies to come around in a long time. Excellent! I would give it about 8.5/10. B-rad is da Shiznit.

CLERKS (1994) *** Brian O' Halloran, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Jeff Anderson, Lisa Spoonauer. First-time filmmaker Kevin Smith's hilarious independent film focusing on the world of convenience store clerks and the daily madness that surrounds them. Talky, witty and clever script filmed in grainy, edgy black and white with some moments of genius.

I like the bit where they close the store and play hockey on the roof

I used to be a massive fan of Kevin Smith, you know. Like the guy's who always post on the fantastic www.viewaskew.com/ every week I'd have watched at least 2 of his then 4 films.
Then I stopped idolising the guy so much. I think I matured or something... I can't honestly explain why... I do have all of his films and do still like them! But there comes a time where you stop and move on!
"Clerks." is probably his best effort so far and that being his first and 10 years ago is a shame as I hoped he would progress more than he has within the Hollywood system.
Poor acting is covered by Smith's excellent script. Dialogue is Smith's gift and long may he keep using it!
You learn to associate and like Dante and everybody knows an a**hole like Randal!!! Can honestly say I have experienced so much in a store though!!!!
Brilliant film to discover... Especially those who want to become a film maker.
9/10

I'm not going to waste much time on this. I only want to warn people that the acting, dialogue, plot (or lack of plot), and most everything else about this film stink. The other people who have commented on it obviously represent an incredibly narrow braindead segment of society. Don't bother.

Kevin Smith is a nasty man who makes nasty movies, and Clerks tops the list (I can almost here Kevin saying "Thanks" in the background). If misanthropy and reaffirmation of hopelessness are your gigs, this movie is for you. It is nasty for nasty's sake because Kevin Smith had nothing better to do with his time, because what else better does anyone have to do with there time, anyway, you know?

It's in the top 250 at IMDB. Wow! Did we see the same movie? This is one of the worst movies I've ever sat through.
I'd heard so much about Kevin Smith's clever dialogue, but unless you think that mentioning a fictional toddler movie title followed by a list of ersatz porno movie titles is wit, you'll find this movie as moronic as I did. Even by the movie's low budget standards, the acting is uniformly terrible -- I've seen more compelling high school theater. The plot, if you can call it that, is arbitrary in the worst way.
Couple this with over-the-top stylized cinematography that serves no aesthetic purpose, characters that show no development and come to us purely through clunky exposition, and you have the most over-rated movie of the 90's.
