Don't expect great things to happen in this movie or for the plot to makes sense. But if you want to sit back and enjoy a silly 18th-century romp through gorgeous Venice, then Cassanova will hit the right spot. Heath Ledger is a likable hero in a puppyish, golden retriever sort of way, and Sienna Miller is lovely, though forgettable. The real stars are Oliver Platt and Jeremy Irons. Without their witty contributions, this movie would fade from memory quicker than a Chinese meal. Their acting is worth the cost of your two hours of viewing. This movie, in fact, reminds me of the swashbuckling, romantic adventure flix so popular in the 30's, 40's, and 50's, when studios churned out a movie a week for viewer consumption. Think Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, and you'll have a pretty good idea about the caliber of this film: Entertaining, but not good enough to make the A list.

'' We cam play classical music in the background while we all romp around being terribly silly and kissing and we can have some terribly nice soft * scenes in it with lots of candles and also we can have a ball and be satirical about religion and torture, oh DO say yes, darling Mummy do''

Heath Ledger was pretty as always (well, except as the Joker)but the movie was a very long sit-com. Very, very long. If I had been in a theater watching it, I would never have made it through in one sitting. This is the kind of movie you watch on DVD, pause and come back to later. May I suggest a better interpretation of it--the TV miniseries starring David Tennant (yes, Doctor Who) as the young Casanova and Peter O'Toole as Old Casanova, reliving his memories. I don't know how accurate it is to the REAL Casanova, but it was much better--much sexier. You really believed Tennant as Casanova. Ledger was....very pretty and nice to look at--he was a model in this and quite flat in his affect.

The main problem with this movie is that it cannot decide whether to take itself seriously or not. As a matter of fact, it is very difficult to define. Is it drama that strayed off in the wrong direction or comedy that just isn't funny? Only two things prevent this film from receiving an even lower rating: good, solid acting from almost all involved and great costumes. But that is not nearly enough for a good motion picture... The movie starts off well enough, tends to get bogged down half way and becomes totally ridiculous towards the end. I wonder what the filmmakers had in mind, what did they want to accomplish? Whatever it was, it didn't work.
