If you ever wanted a good example of irony, this is it. Once again, these artists are taken advantage of, this time by the movie industry. The very fact that they failed to use the amazing original recordings of these artist(most likely to save on production costs)shows that the filmmaker had ultimately no real interest in their music or history, and just wanted to make some money(and keep it all for themselves again). The one and only redeeming quality of this movie is that hopefully, people who watch it will find the REAL recordings of these artist and actually LISTEN to them. I myself don't care about their personal lives. I just love the music.

This movie is a must see! It absolutely exceeded my expectations. The casting was brilliant with the always impressive Jeffrey Wright, the talented Adrien Brody, the OK at best Beyonce, Mos def with another convincing showing, and Columbus Short in a breakout performance which caught me by surprise.I never considered Beyonce an amazing actress but she made me a believer with the portrayal of the great Etta James. The way she sang while evoking such emotion was absolutely scintillating. As for Mos Def, we knew he could act from Something the Lord Made Days, but he used those pors and transcended into the heartwarming shoes of Chuck Berry. No need to say anything about Jeffrey Wright, the most underrated actor of our generation. Great movie... Id be disappointed if this movie does not generate Oscar buzz... But oh heck... Who am i Kidding? I almost forgot that the Oscars rarely recognizes true talent.Trust me... watch it!!!

I saw the movie today and loved it! Jeffrey Wright steals it with his outstanding performance as Muddy Waters. I'm definitely looking for best supporting actor nods for Mr. Wright. Mos Def is both hilarious and surprisingly magnificent as he captures the spirit of Chuck Berry. Beyonce Knowles gives a very worthwhile performance as the Etta James, capturing her songs, especially "At Last", in such unique ways that they became her own. The rest of the ensemble case, including Adrian Brody, Gabrielle Union and many others, were wonderful. Many reviews criticize writer/director Darnell Martin for his non-factual historical account of Chess Records; however, the movie challenges viewers to go back and research the facts while becoming introduced or reacquainted with the musical genres that lay the foundation for all contemporary R&B and hip hop sounds.
