About halfway through the movie I got pissed because I realized I had seen this before. Not the movie but the amazing series called DARK, which if you haven't seen, you definitely should. Just extremely disappointed because the twist was not remotely new. Unlike the series that keeps you guessing, the movie was incredibly slow and really no explanation for what causing the situation to occur. Also, choosing this storyline, can not give it justice in a movie. DARK in my opinion, was one the BEST shows EVER. And yes I know it's a strong statement. Hopefully M. Knight has better stories coming.......

I've read some reviews here that say the movie didn't explain anything at the end. But the movie doesn't have to explain anything because the story is already pretty clear.
First of all, the positive aspects...the actors are great, especially Eliza Scanlen and Dylan O'Brien. The sound and the set also create enough of a mysterious atmosphere and the viewer is drawn into the story and the characters.
Here come mega spoilers: But as it was so beautifully said in the movie "The Repeaters", "Don't fudge with time" and plenty of that happens here.
For all those who didn't understand the story. The swamp area has a kind of time jump zone where you end up in all those years, where there's drought, so to speak, and where Anna has her seizures. Anna is the daughter of Celeste's second husband, Ellie's half-sister and also her grandmother, because Ellie's father Paris, Celeste's first husband, jumps back in time with her to 1952. That's why Ellie tells her stepfather Daniel that they are family, because Daniel is also Ellie's "grandfather" and Anna is Celeste's stepdaughter and her ex-mother-in-law at the same time. Simple, isn't it?
The point I don't get though is that theoretically Ellie could "pick up" her dad Paris in this swamp wormhole time jump zone and save him from death...so the whole "family construct" would be even more obscure than explained...that's why time travel movies are so both understandable and yet nonsensical at the same time.

Who'd thought: no murders, no gore, almost zero profanity, no nudity, no violence and yet still a solid, watchable thriller...
The cinematography is really good, the pacing is just right, the tone of the film is engaging and lulls you in. The only downside is it's slightly complicated. But then it is dealing with the most mind blowing concept known to man. (No spoilers here).
Acting is spot on and it's emotive but never cheesy. Dare I say this film is a ray of light in an ever growing dark world of films nowadays.
I'd highly recommend this as a perfect Thursday/Friday/Saturday cosy thriller.

Caddo Lake is mesmerizing tale that doesn't fully kick in until the 'back half' of the film. The first hour is slow, and rather dull, but the twists and turns the narrative ends up taking more than makes up for a lot the poor pacing. Dylan O'Brien is strong here, and it's great to see him in again in a leading roll, but the script didn't give him much to pull from. I think a second viewing will be required to fully understand where the story ends up.
Verdict:
Slow first half with an interesting story that ends on a strong note.
Give the movie time to build.
I recommend this as an 'easy' movie night.
