This film is unbelievably bad from beginning to end. The dialogue is insipid, and the plot has been done over and again so many times that all I could think about during the entire run-time was "The Children's Film Festival with Kukla, Fran, and Ollie." Rarely do I feel like I have wasted precious time watching a movie, but this is one of those rare occasions. It is as if somebody with no budget found local theater actors to perform. I guess maybe that can result in something good on occasion, but in this case, along with the terrible camera work, the end result is a saltless, flavorless foray into a boring, boring excuse for a film.

"Bullied" (aka, "Rock Sugar") was a perplexing film. One strand of the film focused on the bullying of young Charlotte Tan at school. Another addressed an even more troubling situation for her at home. The two elements of the film never completed meshed. In the school part of the story, it was not convincing that Charlotte would nearly be suspended from school after she was on the receiving end of bullying from Brenda. There was also a clear racial animus against her by her classmates. The clueless vice-principal never gave Charlotte the opportunity to tell her side of the story. And, while Charlotte's father was somewhat sympathetic, her mother simply took the word of the school administrator at face value. On the home front, the Tans have guests for Christmas with Aunt Janice and Uncle Mark arriving for a stay. It turns out that Uncle Mark is a pervert, and Charlotte heroically recuses her nemesis Brenda as Mark is about to assault her. This was a lot to ask of a 12-year-old over the Christmas holidays! The bizarre sequence in which Charlotte seems to accidentally kill Brenda, who mysteriously rises from the dead like Lazurus, lacked credibility. Still, the strength of the film was in the outstanding performances of the cast members. While all the pieces did not fit together, the filmmakers had a degree of success in dramatizing the ordeals that young people may go through both in the area of bullying by their peers and dysfunction within their families at home.

The movie is marginally okay, but I felt that it was cheap in that it played violin music in order to spark thrills. There wasn't anything exciting about the premise, and the scenes of the kids being taunted in the schoolyard were painful to see. The young actress who played Charlotte has some promise, she carries the film well despite how contrived the script became. Every adult character in this film was mindless, from the school principal to the parents to the aunt & uncle. This young kid needed some direction, yet no one could steer her the right way. Basically every character is a bully in their own right. The movie needed a central plot, but the viewer is subjected to adults drinking, school kids acting catty, and a creepy uncle. There's no lesson to learn from it.

Aside from this story addressing two of the biggest problems children face in just about any culture-bullying and sexual predators-I thought the lead actors did a great job with their characters. Charlotte (Jacinta Klassen) especially gave an amazing performance in giving her character depth and likability. You'll wish she was your daughter .....she's so lovable yet strong. To be honest I forgot it was an indie film while I was watching it!! The ending was a bit confusing for me as well but it didn't take away from my appreciation of the quality. Well done all who worked hard on this project!!

Bullied (2021) is not a deep dive into the effects of bullying so much as it is a bad soap opera-esque storyline. The bullying made up 30% of the film and this 30% is mostly just stereotypical characters that truthfully don't have any motivation behind them. These scenes also consist over-used cliches to get through the message that bullying is bad. The other 70% is dedicated to this new family where the dad is a pedophile. This plot-line is really boring although has less cliches, new characters that do have some backstory however in the end it becomes a psychological-thriller that fails tremendously at saying anything of importance. The acting is also overwhelmingly poor and that goes for the writing of the movie as well. Do not recommend watching at all.

This film has a lot of important messages that are shown tastefully. I enjoyed it.

Can someone explain the ending because I'm so lost. Why did Brenda just vanish ? So did she die or live? It makes no sense whatsoever. Over all though this movie could've been catchy of it would've had real thriller scenes. It was pretty off and boring to be honest.

Great local thriller with a fabulous cast of Aussie talent, especially the kids. Bullying is still ongoing and its great to see Angela How tackling an often glazed over topic. Well done. Looking forward to more from Angela very soon!
