First off let me start by saying that I am not the kind of person to slate a film on the basis of it being popular, it never ceases to amaze me that films widely regarded to be "one of the greatest" have reviews from people calling it "one the worst". I have came to the conclusion that these people fall into one of either two categories; A) I hate EVERYTHING POPULAR and I am a tool, or B) I would rather watch an artsy Eastern European film made with a budget of Kit-Kat proportions…and I am a tool. Sorry I realise I have released some hidden bitterness which doesn't really contribute to this review. Anyway on to the Brüno movie; this film will make you laugh, I did, everyone else did and you probably will to (unless you are a robot, which would be very cool BTW). So you may be pondering the mediocrity of my score for it, well I guess in summery I could say that in my OPINION there are funny moments but as a movie it is not very good. Borat I loved, I don't think I have ever laughed harder at a film. As well as being funny I felt the story had continuity where he was travelling from east to west in America and giving an insight into the different cultures that exist and using them for comedy. Although there were some random points I felt there was a general storyline. In contrast I felt that Brüno had little continuity at all. The locations he travelled to and people he met almost seemed to have been plucked out of a hat, but most likely out of thin air. The Brüno storyline was a tad loose or to quote Borat: "like a wizard's sleeve". As it is nearing lunchtime I am going to compare films to sandwiches; to represent the beginning/goal and end/conclusion you have the bread (or ciabatta roll if you want to spoil yourself), then all the events in between act as the filling and you can have anything you like; lettuce, cheese, chicken, ham, tomato, peppers, peanut butter, jam, whatever sauce or garnish your little sandwich-loving heart desires…anything really (but not mayonnaise). You need both bread and filling to make a good sandwich/movie and it's the bread/filling combo that determines whether it's a good sandwich/movie or a bad sandwich/movie. You may be wondering if I have simply gone mad at this point or if I have relevant point, patience its coming. It is my OPINION that; when they set out to make the Brüno movie they thought up numerous funny scenes, and THEY ARE FUNNY if not a little outrageous. The movie is chocked full crunchy lettuce, sweet peppers, red onion and even a slice of bacon or two. But they suddenly realised they had no bread to hold these delicious fillings together so in their haste they substituted real bread with Ryvita; breads deformed and disappointing cousin. So in the end while you could enjoy brief moments of flavour from the fillings you know in your heart that you are not eating a real sandwich. So in conclusion I found Brüno funny but I just wasn't convinced that it was a good film. I am not saying that the Brüno sandwich is a waste of time, it has funny moments and if you are a fan of Borat then I feel you owe it to Mr Cohen to go see him in Brüno because he is a funny man. Then and only then can you decide if you loved or loathed it. Now if you don't mind I am away to make myself a Godfather sandwich.

Granted, the DVD I rented began to skip about halfway through the film and I didn't see the whole movie, I believe that the only reason that this movie doesn't get the same reviews as Borat is because the American audience is too uptight. Yes, the movie is gross and at times cringe-inducing. Some of the more extreme scenes could have been hampered down, but I believe at the expense of the humor. Posters say they have never met anyone like Bruno, however have they ever met anyone like Borat. Neither exist in the real world and that is why the movie works. Cohen is a brilliant improviser and always two steps ahead of his targets. Some of the pranks don't deliver, but that's okay. I admire his audacity. For all the people who say it was too gross, imagine if the film was filled with explicit heterosexual sex, I'm sure the reaction would be much different. The aversion to this movie is primarily because there is a deep seated disgust to homosexual activity within the American psyche and even the most tolerant liberal is likely to be disgusted at some point. That's okay, that is why the movie works, it asks us what it is and why we are appalled.

Fans of "Da Ali G" show will find Bruno to be a familiar character, but 'Bruno' lacks the element that made it funny on Da Ali G show. Instead of Bruno's gayness being implied, the whole movie consists of * after *, and ass after ass being flashed in front of the audience, to the point of being nauseating. This movie is 5% of the type of humor that made Borat funny, and 95% shock humor. 'Bruno' had many funny scenes, such as scenes with Paula Abdul, and Ron Paul. On the other hand, scenes such as those at the "Swingers Club" played out like some sick porno movie and were barely tolerable to completely intolerable. I don't know why they bothered, as almost everybody in the theatre was turning away from the nauseating scenes playing out before them. Similar to Borat, Bruno takes on bigoted rednecks and the overly religious. The setttings are also more diverse than that of Borat, making the first half of this film more interesting. On the otherhand, the last half of this film borders being unwatchable because of the nudity. A less funny, more disgusting version of Borat, basically. 4.5/10

In 2006, I went to see a movie called "Borat" and found myself completely caught off guard for the hilarity that ensued. I thought it was easily one of the funniest movies I had ever seen, and I still think that. However, it left high expectations for whatever Sacha Baron Cohen would do next. When I first learned of the premise of "Bruno" I thought the concept was likely to be very humorous, but I was surprised when it wasn't. Amongst theatergoers (myself included) there was only scattered, uncomfortable laughter. Not like "Borat", where the audience was practically in stitches the whole time. The plot was pretty thin. In fact, I'd say they just threw something together to hang the "gags" on. I was left supremely disappointed, and won't be recommending "Bruno" to anyone. Skip it!

I just saw it and I was a bit let down. I am gay, I love Cohen, and was ready to laugh. But the problem was he didn't expose any under-the-surface bigotry like he did in Borat. He overdid his "gayness" to such a violent extreme that he forced reactions out of people, some of whom are probably plenty openminded. You ended feeling sorry for these people. Especially Ron Paul, who out of all the politicians Cohen could have chosen, deserved it the least. He's no champion of gay rights, but he is certainly not an enemy either and he reacted like any normal person would in that nightmarish situation. There were also some genuine bigots in the film, but Cohen goes to such an extreme to provoke them, by the time it gets to that point, who cares? There were funny moments, of course, Cohen is a funny man, but this movie lacks the bite Borat had. This was just an exercise in bad taste (which is fine, if that's what you're looking for).

Brüno is a gay Austrian fashion reporter impersonated by the man that notoriously starred as Borat in... Borat. (For those that have seen Borat: you probably know what to expect. If you did not like Borat for the painfully explicit content, stay away from Brüno. If you almost died of laughter during a certain hotel scene in Borat, go see Brüno immediately and prepare for almost certain death.) Obviously, having made Borat, the producers of Brüno had a hard time to repeat the surprise effect. It should therefore not come as a surprise that the movie contains substantially less confrontations between the main character and innocent (famous) bystanders. Still, confrontations with a number of people, among which a few famous ones, seem sincere, and work on multiple levels, as in Borat. Others are clearly scripted, but not less funny for that (watch the ending credits for an example). In general, compared to Borat, Brüno focuses more on a) effectively shocking it's viewers with the (sexual) misconduct of the main character and b) stunts of this main character in front of a large audience. Essentially, this time the shock effect is moved from the 'random' people that appear in the movie, to the audience looking at the movie. For many, it will definitely be more shocking than Borat, given the shamelessly explicit content that exploits every possibility for jokes concerning men making out. For others, the never-ending provoked racism of Borat will have a longer-lasting impact. All I know is that I laughed a lot during this movie. It will once again lead to lots of controversy and imitation at thousands of workplaces around the globe. Maybe it is therefore best if you know what it is about. But be warned. If you are easily offended, you will be offended. Majorly.

This movie is absolutely horrible. Not funny in any sense of the word. I was not offended by anything... Oh wait I was offended by even going to see it. The Bruno character was not even funny. The antics weren't funny. His dialog wasn't funny.Nothing and I mean nothing about this film was funny. Dragonball: Evolution and Street Fighter is Oscar worthy compared to this dry uninspired mess. Pure waste of time just as Borat was. I am not one to write goofy my wife left me lines but she was pretty mad at me for taking her to see it. Avoid this movie at all costs. There truly are better movies to see such as The Hangover and Up. 2 very good movies that can't be missed. Shoot I have no intention to ever see I Love You Beth Cooper but I am sure the end result would be better than this junk.

I thought this was awesome and just as hilarious as Borat, maybe better! Brüno is very racist, very gay, and very funny! He is a Austrian fashion reporter who is soon fired because he disrupts a catwalk show. Bruno and his assistant's assistant Lutz goes to America in hopes of becoming a superstar. He tries to become famous by making a sex tape with Ron Paul, talks to a psychic, adopts a black baby and naming him O.J. Bruno soon realizes that he must act straight in order to be famous, so he consults two Christian gay converters, joins the National Guard, goes hunting with rednecks, learns karate, and attends a swingers party. Will Bruno ever learn to become straight? I highly recommend that you hang out with BRUNO!!!
