The story line had potential but it fell flat (pun intended), you'll only get it if you watch til the end, but I strongly recommend you don't. Don't waste your time watching this movie, the end is a let down, it's confusing, does not make sense.
Also, HORRIBLE acting by Meadow Williams (Jane- the mom).
Not sure how Ray Liotta and Sophie Turner agreed to do this movie.

It's not shocking that the majority of viewers don't understand this movie, it's honestly dark and genius. You need to have a deep resignation with selflessness, self-loathing, love and depression to truly grasp what's happening as the movie unfolds. This soldier hates himself, hates that he's alive, hates the things he's seen and gone through. He starts falling for an underage girl because he sees her as pure and doesn't want to ruin that, in fact he wants to protect her with everything he has left. He turns to a prostitute because like everyone he has carnal needs that she can fulfill but she falls for him because unlike the usual cheating, abusive, dirt, pathetic johns she's used to, she can tell he's different and that he struggles with similar internal feelings as her own. Jealousy rams rampant in every character of this story and to be honest there needs to be more character background or development to give a more well rounded vision to viewers. Ultimately the meaning of the ending is that while the father was prepared to kill the man for not loving his daughter and feeling he's taken advantage of her, he realizes that the man's willingness to die for her better good is actually a true indication of how much he does love her and how good he is. The man then decides to take his own life, saying "you're welcome" to the father before jumping from the building to signify that he knows he will never be good enough for her, that there is no changing that and in order for her to move on he has to die, but he's willing to take his own life to save the relationship between father and daughter because she would never forgive him if he killed the man she loves.

I don't know where to begin. There are some wonderful actors in this movie (minus Jane, and allnof Penelopes friends) but their agents should be fired for letting them go through with this.

First of all, the acting of the person who played the mother was unbelievably horrible. How did that actress get that role?
In the beginning, it seemed like it was going to be a good movie but midway through it started to not make any sense and it just went downhill from there and had a very bizarre ending that made me question whether I missed something.
This is the worst movie I've seen in a very long time.

The narrative here may evade viewers but it's strong, powerful and well played with all around excellent performances, and all the circuses; music, direction, etc.
Ray Liotta shines as "the family man" and he will be missed. Happy to have watched what may have been his final performance. Never a dull moment and the point this film is making is an important one and its delivery is clever and subtle.
Those who know what it means to suffer PTSD as a result of being in the service may find this film a troubling experience. For the rest of us this film presents a beautifully crafted message and it's delivered with the best of Liotta.

It would have been much better without that irritating actress Meadow Williams. The rest of the cast was great except for the one male high school friend who was also obnoxious . Anyways, whoever cast her should be fired. She was horrible and irritatingly bad. The ending was a shocker but I guess that's what they go for when they write scripts like this. Ray Liotta with his usual gangster self played a father who was trying to keep his cool in a very trying situation. The situation that every father with a beautiful young daughter dreads and hopes never happens to their daughter. There was also a young high school kid playing one of her friends a very irritating in Young man, you'll know the one he really made my skin crawl. He's the kind of friend that you don't want around. The obnoxious one who always instigates things. He's the kind of friend you wanna rip his head off.

Freeman Bender (Mark Kassan) has PTSD and a history of violence. Charges were dropped as long as he stays on his meds. He spends his money on Elly (Ivana Milicevic) a prostitute. Penny (Sophie Turner) a 17 year old girl likes the dark needy personality of Freeman and thinks she can turn his life around. Their relationship remains non-sexual at his insistence. Her parents do not approve and we soon discover Penny's father (Ray Liotta) has similar anger management issues as Freeman and we also later discover they share the prostitute. Small town that NYC is. In the end they all gather together at the dinner table like an Agatha Christie story.
I thought the story was unrealistic and messed up from beginning to end, especially the end. Didn't believe one single character.
