Blue Mountain State was a series that was absolutely hilarious, celebrating the college campus drinking culture of many US establishments of higher education, bro culture, near complete disregard of women beyond their physical attributes and despite purportedly being about a football team a single game was seen across 3 complete series. Backed up by a cast of 1 dimensional characters the TV show BMS was a hedonistic feast for male 13-20 something viewers everywhere. The Rise of Thadland however did not capture this same magic in any respect. Although featuring that same cast of characters they seem slightly out of place in this new feature, hollow renditions of previously well loved caricatures. The plot of the film is simple enough and totally predictable in as many aspects of a traditional BMS episode. However where the TV show's plot lines were funny the film's felt as though a single BMS episode had been stretched to the 90 minute mark. Unfortunately such stretching left the film mostly mirthless and in many respects just plain sad as there weren't enough jokes to go around despite some brief moments of hilarity. Overall I give credit to the showrunners in trying to milk what was a very entertaining golden calf. However they ended up merely flogging a dead horse.

This movie is horrible... BMS the series was good, but this movie.. is TERRIBLE!! From start to finish this movie was underwhelming, the premises is horrible, the idea's and jokes are over used. This movie made me want to stop and watch something else more often then I thought possible. The original Blue Mountain State Show I thought was funny as hell, this turned every joke into the lowest possible idea of humor and mostly just dug deep into the depths of stupid... This Movie sucked on every single level I have ever conceived for a movie to suck on... if I was forced at gun point to watch this movie again.... I would SINCERELY consider the bullet...

As a fan of the show I was expecting more of the same -- low brow humour. With relatively low expectations going in, I have to say the movie exceeded my expectations in how bad it was. The story was over the top. I mean the whole party over football thing is great but I would've liked more football in the movie instead of a ridiculous story-line. Was actually expecting the movie to be about Alex Moran's final season at BMS and not about how the goat house had basically turned into a distopia. The only reason I gave this movie a 2 instead of a 1 is because I was a fan of the show and it was nice to see the characters again. But yeah, this movie just stretched everything too far. That's all I have to say, don't waste your time with it, it may actually ruin the show for you.

I don't write many reviews but I felt I had to after watching the BMS Movie. I understand that the movie is low budget but do you really need a lot of money to show college kids drinking and playing football? Being a huge fan of the TV show having watched and re-watched it many times I was excited as anyone to hear that they were going to make a movie. The trailer implied that it would lead on from the BMS TV show as well as bringing back some of our favourite characters from previous seasons (Radon and Shilo). So I am sure we were all thinking, football, drinking and crazy antics, and whereas the show did get the latter two it was missing one of the main aspects....FOOTBALL! There was literally 2 minutes of not even football at the start of the movie on a very run down looking field which was quite depressing and that's it. As for the drinking and antics I think they didn't do it right, the film was basically one giant party which made it feel like they didn't actually accomplish anything throughout the whole film. Using a different goat house didn't help either and just disconnected me from feeling the buzz of the old show, it felt cold and strange. The two old fan favourites Radon and Shilo were expected to at least have a little role in the film, maybe on an opposing team or coming back to BMS to join Alex in his senior year, can you imagine how great it would of been if they included Alex playing against both Radon and Shilo as an ultimate showing on how far Alex has progressed while at BMS? Well we will never know since both made a cameo appearance at the end, Radon had literally like one line and Shilo a couple minutes of irrelevant screen time. Honourable mention for JON JON and Debra who were nowhere to be seen. There were funny parts dotted around throughout the film but it felt like you kept waiting and waiting for something to happen to give the film some sort of edge, right up to the part when it ended. Even as I finish writing this I have bitter sweet memories of the TV show, the first episode with Alex preparing to laze off through college right up to him becoming the King of BMS and I wish that the film let the show go out with a bang instead of fizzling out as a surreal version of itself.

Really loved the show. The whole idea was great and there was so much character potential. Too bad they blew it. It seems like the whole main theme in the series was lost. The main point was to do well in football and then all the crazy parties that went along with it. All the drama and thrill of being a football player in college. Alright real life football players probably never did this but hey. But they lost it. It went too far. The plot is loose and introduces way too many new people and a whole new scenario. I love the end plot twist with Thad being broke, that really hit the character of Thad. But the rest of the plot went bongos. Yeah there was some great scenes but they went too far out. The drugs were too many and too much, the feces and pee fumes... I just did not buy it as a real thing, yeah yeah maybe it was not meant to be seen as real but hey they always stuck to reality somewhat in the series. The whole plot just seems as they tried to find a way to shove as many characters from the series as they could into the movie. I like that they brought back the old players but that was not Shilo or Randall. Even coach Daniels is not really coach Daniels, but to be fair it was not as far off. And what happened to Jon-Jon he was a nice guy, gave a good twist. Randall seemed way different and Thad just somehow came off as too pathetic. They should have kept football as the focus. So after a long rant my conclusion is that even though I did not like the movie I still got my fat ass off the sofa and watched it. I still like BMS and what they should have done, really is re-air it. Make Moran train up someone new, bring the Pros into it and show their story, instead of leaving their story as a flap into nothing. Fx what does Shilo do right now other than flashing abs? And when did Sammy stop being funny and started being completely mental? The fun was watching Alex do triple down banging and Sammy trying to keep up with him. See Thad as a mixture of dumb, strict and touchy feely. See coach Daniels go nuts on someone and have Debby being a bitch. Please that was all I wanted... The only part of that I really got was coach Daniels going mental, although again a plot-hole... what happened to Debby and his huge house? It was only just about half a year after the end of the series (in movie time) Did Daniels really get that bad after just half a year (ish). Since when did he start excessive drinking? Okay he didn't seem sober but not stupid either. Well I was happy that more BMS content came out but the quality could have been double and still not near what I had hoped. Try again!

As a big fan of the TV series I was looking forward to the continued adventures of Alex, Sammy, Thad and the other members of BMS. Now it's always a difficult task to tack on a stand-alone movie to a series (that ended almost 6 years ago), and whilst I admire the fact they took a crack at it, this movie fell well short of my expectations. The biggest problem I have with this movie is the complete lack of sports.. BMS was centered around the exploits of a college football team, and their relationship on and off the field. In Rise of Thadland (ROT) we're treated to one lackluster practice session and that's all she wrote on football. The rest of the movie centers around one completely implausible party (not enough money to save the Goat House yet a party that would make Mr Hefner blush). Speaking of Hefner, early on in the movie they set the tone that ROT has a different rating than the TV series (topless girls galore) but when they have the chance to really push the envelope they hold back. In fact the only full-frontal nudity is supplied by Sammy's character (I'm going out on limb here and say we were privy to Sammy's private parts WAY TOO MUCH!!!) The movie felt flat and disjointed and the use of returning characters Shilo and Radon was nothing short of criminal. No catch ups, reunion scenes just brief semi-cameos. Mmmm time to revisit the TV series and get back that BMS feeling.
