Scott Jordan (Roddy McDowall) and his Uncle Bill (Damian O'Flynn) take time from their own ranch chores to welcome home Martha Baxter (Fay Baker and her Daughter Cindy (Lyn Thomas), gone from their ranch two years. Sheriff Gilbert (Kirby Grant) gives Cindy her late father's mare, "Lady." Bill's son Daniel (Rand Brooks), who had run away from his dad's ranch, returns with his friend Roy (Gordon Jones), and several wild horses. When Daniel threatens to kill the wild stallion, Midninght, Scott buys him for $30. With patience Scott succeeds in taming Midnight. Cindy becomes interest with Daniel, but when her mother proves he is lazy, the girl is angry at Scott, thinking he has been party to the expose. When the sheriff becomes suspicious of Roy and the brand on Daniel's horses, the latter has Roy steal Midnight to get rid of him. The stallion tramples Roy to death when the latter attack him, and Scott rides away on Midnight to prevent Bill from shooting the animal. Scott hides his horse, and with Cindy's aid dresses Midnight's wounds. The sheriff convinces Bill that Roy attacked Midnight first. The horse beats off a mountain lion, and Bill wins back Scott's friendship when he shots the lion as it threatens Scott. The sheriff informs Scott that Daniel's horses were stolen from horse-traders who were shot. Scott tells this to Daniel, who knocks out Scott and plans to kill the sheriff.

Everyone is pleased when Rand Brooks returns, especially his brother, Roddy McDowall. Brooks has turned his wanderjahr into a profitable trading venture, swapping his old plug into a string of half a dozen handsome horses. McDowall takes a shine to the stallion, and trains him, naming him 'Midnight.' However, there are problems that come out eventually. It's one of seven movies McDowall produced for him to star in, and it's a handsome production, particularly when the shooting heads up to Lone Pine for DP William Sickner to shoot the Alabama Hills. McDowall is too monotonously nice in this coming-of-age story: hard working, clueless as to what's going on, and so forth, but director Budd Boetticher keeps things on an innocuous keel.

Although hampered by a corny script, an unpromising opening, some atrociously padded dialogue and the presence of an untalented youngster (Damian O'Flynn), this is one of the most interesting of cult director Boetticher's early films. (The name is pronounced "Betty-cur"). True, the opening sequence in which O'Flynn and McDowall take pratfalls in and out of season, can induce a rush to the nearest exit. But don't follow the mob. Stay with it. The film has nowhere to go but up! And that it does. Indeed, some fine location photography by William Sickner, plus Boetticher's inspired use of these natural backgrounds lend the movie a sweep and grandeur that is matched by few (if any) other Monogram productions. Lyn Thomas, Kirby Grant and Gordon Jones rise to the occasion. And even Edward J. Kay's music score is a cut above his usual efforts. In all, despite its faults, Black Midnight is "must" viewing for connoisseurs.
