This is 1 cliche upon another cliche. Also, it has (more than typical) gratuitous lowbrow sexual innuendo. Last but not least, 90% of the crew is ridiculously good looking and/or sexy; not your typical crew hete. Worst of all, not a single credit given to the crew of the original "Essex", a whaleship of the 18th Century. It was sunk in 1820 by an enormous sperm whale, which inspired Herman Melville to write "Moby Dick". All producers and distributors should be sued by the publisher of this great novel. The sinking of the Essex was the 19th Century equivalent to the 20th Century sinking of the Titanic. Although the number of people who died is vastly different, the stories carried near equal weight for their (respective) day. Please skip this garbage.

It is indeed Moby dick meets pacific rim critters that read about knights of Sidonia.
Nevertheless I really enjoyed most of it.
GFX are way up there, acting is good, story is good enough, fails on the execution at 3/4 but picks up at the very end.
I think they had too many idea's and all had to be edited into the last 3/4 before the climax.
If you are on weed you might not even notice =)
Enjoyed it but also, next time, polish it up more and get a 10.

Some of the cgi was ok.. the acting however was a headache.
It's really better to watch it with the sound off and let your mind make up the dialog... speaking of sound, even the sound mixing on this movie was horrible.
Some people should just not make movies I guess!

Why'o why don't they make movies like this anymore? there wasn't a moments' boredom thoughout this movie unlike what can be said for hollywoods' hyped up nonsense like marvels ultron rubbish or whatever it was called.

I wanted to watch a movie on night and came across a low budget space movie I haven't heard of.
I must say this movie was pretty good for what it is, for an indie film it surprised me how well the sets and locations looked, The interior of the ship looked believable and the scenes in space were pretty well shot.
The plot is moby dick in space with the whale being a gigantic alien creature modeled after the cosmic dragon in Chinese mythology, which was pretty interesting. The plot was a bit all over the place and their was a weird slasher bit towards the end of the movie that was pretty dumb.
The acting isn't great but not so bad that it detracts from the movie, all the characters feel like they fit and are believable.
It's worth a watch and I think the imdb rating is a bit low especially if you are a fan of sci-fi.
It's a completely passable space movie that's pretty average that will keep you invested and not bored.

Well written, well acted and the story was ok too. I thought this was worth more than the IMDb rating it received. And I can't believe how much Zulay Henao reminded me of Megan Markle, just saying..

I mean they weren't even subtle about it.
So we have the obsessed Captain, the Space Whale he wants revenge on, and of course, the whacky crew of misfits. One character even has the same name as a Melville character, and the ship is called the Essex, the real life Whaler whose disastrous voyage inspired the novel.
I think it looks pretty good for a direct to video SF, but the story has too many characters, too many subplots, and too many times you ask yourself "waaaaaah" when a character does something stupid.
