The Barbershop is back and Ice Cube still can't act. I guess you can't blame him for trying... or is he trying? He had a decent enough supporting cast around him for his lack of acting skills to go partially unnoticed. I like Cedric the Entertainer so his parts were small boosts to help me through the rest of the movie.
It goes as no surprise that the first Barbershop was better. The story just wasn't as compelling this time around. A modern, state of the art, super barbershop opens across the street from Calvin's small, traditional, and welcoming barbershop; posing a threat to his business. This happens just after he got through saving his barbershop too. Of course there are the sub-plots as well, and they were equally uninteresting if not more. Overall, you are treated with a few laughs and a happy ending, so the movie wasn't all bad.

This opens with Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer)'s origins in 1967 when he runs into the barbershop to hide from the cops for stealing a steak. Calvin Palmer, Jr. (Ice Cube) is more comfortable as the owner of the family barbershop with many of the old crew. Jimmy is now working for alderman Lalowe Brown. Eve is still angry. Gina (Queen Latifah) runs the local beauty shop. Land developer Quentin Leroux is buying up local businesses. Franchise barbershop "Nappy Cutz" opens across the street.
The gang is back and the chemistry is still there. This time they're taking on the issue of gentrification which is less edgy than the original. The tension isn't as high. In a way, Barbershop itself has been gentrified. It's still a place where one likes to revisit because of the cast of characters.
