I am a huge fan of Meg Cabot's work, and have read Avalon High the book several times. The book provides a fresh and modern take on the Arthurian legend whilst still incorporating scenarios and characters relate-able to a young adult audience.
I found out about the movie a few months before it was released, and immediately went to search it. I was outraged when I saw that they had changed Ellie's name to Allie, since it was one of the crucial parts of the book - the assumption by Marco that she is Elaine of Astolat when she is really the Lady of the Lake. But I still decided that I would watch the movie anyway.
This movie should not be compared or said to be based off the book! Im sorry but once you have changed pretty much every crucial part of the book it stops being an adaption and just turns into a cheap knock-off.
There were several changes that completely ruined the movie: 1) Will should have been Arthur's incarnation and once they changed that to Allie, the small details - names etc - did not match up and slot into place 2) Changing Mr Moore from Merlin to Mordred seemed out of place and just left Marco looking like a typical bully, because they did not explain the history between Marco and Will 3) If you take Disney's version of thing and slot it into the actual Arthurian legend then nothing adds up! 4) Very few of the character were developed in the way that Meg Cabot envisioned them (and others weren't developed at all)
To someone who hasn't read the book this movie is probably okay, but to me the movie completely ruins the dynamic interweaving plot and detail that Meg Cabot put into the book; and therefore completely fails as a movie adaption.

i would give 0 stars if i could! i was extremely excited to see it because Avalon High is one of my favorite books! But they changed so much it could easily be a random movie with a bunch of coincidences. Blonde haired, blue eyed Lance is a bald black guy. Ellie is now Allie. A. William Wagner (in fact they drooped the A i wanna say...)is no longer the reincarnation of King Arthur but an annoying sidekick to Allie aka King Arthur! Will's step brother (but he's really Will's half brother! And the reincarnation of King Arthur's wicked Half Brother! or at least he was in the book...) is actually one of the good guys, there to protect the reincarnation of King Arthur from the reincarnation of his evil half brother!but the teacher that helps in the book is actually the bad guy in the movie! I am so tired of people butchers Meg Cabot's books given the fact she's my favorite author of all time! Oh and Will is British! >.< I have nothing against the cast, they are good Actresses and Actors! I just hate this movie with a passion!

Brittany Robertson is Allie Pennington, cute, smart, and a good runner. In fact when she tries out for the track team at her new high school, she almost sets the school record for the 400 meters. (But she doesn't really look like a good runner, but this is a movie!)
Her parents are King Arthur and Camelot scholars, and in fact her class uses their book. Allie is paired with Joey Pollari as Miles, to do a research paper, and they find there is an ancient prediction that King Arthur will be reincarnated soon, on a Friday night when a rare total eclipse of the moon coincides with a meteor shower. And, it happens to also be the night of the big game.
Among the high school kids are surrogates for King Arthur, Lancelot, Guinivere, Merlin, and a few others. Part of the plot is for them to figure out which person (the football QB maybe?) is destined to be King Arthur. It turns out his girlfriend is getting romantic on the sly with Lance, the QB's best friend, which parallels the King Arthur legend.
A Brit Gregg Sulkin is fine as the QB, Will Wagner.
We saw it on Netflix streaming, a nice clean entertaining movie.
SPOILERS: It actually turns out that Allie becomes the reincarnation of Arthur, and she saves the day. Lance and his girlfriend get Will's blessing to their budding love life and he and Allie appear destined to get together.
