A Gentleman, an Indian and a Ramana all mixed together, added with liberal doses of violence and cruelty, interspersed with the generous exposition of the naval architecture of Sadha, a titillating dance number by Yana Gupta, an almost boring theory of split personality, a leaf out of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, copying the anagram effect from Da Vinci Code, 'replicating' the Matrix Reloaded fight sequence graphics and a monumental waste of public money (IDBI has funded over Rs.12 Crores)- all of this culminating to one Anniyan, which I would love to see have a mega failure. Not just because I hate such movies but because I strongly feel that such movie producers should have a re-think that just visual richness at a phenomenal cost without any good theme and with gruesome scenes cannot succeed. It was heartening to see the moil halls nearly empty after the intermission. Perhaps people were close to puking! Only one song was good and the others were uncorrupted noise.Vikram's acting potential has been exploited nicely in the one scene where he is 'tortured'. Vivek and Prakash Raj have done commendably well. Those are small mercies, though.

My experiences with Bollywood movies are quite good. Although I only watched the ones that had a higher rating. So it's normal that they are good. This movie is somewhat different from the other movies I've watched. Those were more comedy's. This movie also his a comedy side. But it's much more than that. It's much more complex than a comedy. The other personality's from Ambi are very interesting. Anniyan and Remo. Anniyan is his dark side and Remo his romantic side. I won't tell you any more. Because if you like to see something different from India watch this. Good luck with finding it! I'm lucky I had the opportunity to watch this movie.

If you do not know Tamil (just like I don't) then watch the DVD version of ANNIYAN with subtitles (not the Hindi version). You will be proud to find that the best movies in the world are Indian movies (I will learn Tamil just to watch its movies). Roles were challenging but acting/performance was great too. Direction qualifies for a new degree after good better and best. Comedy has good timing and morals delivered are clear. I have been humming the songs specially - Iyengar Vittu Adege with out really knowing what the lyrics means. Actions were well shown and well place in the movie. The scenes were so well placed. Music was super. This is a art, classic, action, science, romance, thriller, drama. A movie does not get better than this.

Shankar has clearly succumbed to those idiots who put down Boys and called it a 'sleaze fest from a director whos usually high on morals and ethics' etc etc What Shankar should have done is given all the naysayers the finger and gone ahead with his own style, highly unconventional and highly controversial story lines and scenarios. He didn't. The result is the 'safe' and ultimately average film called "Anniyan" which does little more than rehash the concept of Indian and Mudhalvan. Alright, that pretty much eliminates the chances of a good plot. The plot could have been better if a debate on those who actually committed the petty crimes, being victims of circumstance themselves, was involved. There was plenty of such potential. Anniyan is good by Tamil movie standards but this is not what you expect from a kick ass director like Shankar. You'd think that by now, the director could produce something truly unique and of international standards (the trailer made it seem that way) while maintaining a plot of local nature, after expending 27 crores but no, revenue that could easily be generated by a modest entertainer is more important. No doubt Anniyan will bring in more revenue than the hilarious Boys but hardly leaves any memorable moments like the latter. Boys was unconventional and risky, in Tamil Nadu but Anniyan is quite the opposite, thus does'nt quite match up. Some media reviews took their toll on Boys but the general urban populace loved that movie. This is what Shankar failed to notice and exploit. The true hero is Vivek and not Vikram, without whom the movie would have sucked very badly. In terms of seriousness, Anniyan falls flat. There's simply no element of shock, controversy or gripping terror as was intended. The movie is simply too unrealistic when one knows that Shankar could have easily made far-fetched scenarios come to life with his skills. This results in some embarrassing scenes rather than the shock value you expect. Shankar has lowered his status by including copied scenes "just because he could". This includes the pathetic and completely pointless carbon copy of Matrix Reloaded fight scenes. They were so poorly redone that they look little more than an attempt. The "Remo" element was just plain pointless and Vikram sounds utterly fake and embarrassing in that role. A separate "Peter" could have been included to add complexity to the storyline. It could have been done better or simply deleted. Was anyone really expected to believe that someone could even percept Ambi, Remo and Anniyan to be different people? Seems as though the story was sacrificed for visual splendor. The songs are average - Decent music (although copied to some extent) but disastrous lyrics. Simply not the usual Shankar material which is supposed to stick to your head for a long long time. Remember Indian, Boys etc ? AR Rehman must be laughing at Harris Jeyraj. The high points of this film are the costumes, dialogue, humor, props and visuals. In conclusion, Shankar hasn't been himself, played it 'safe' and brought out a very average but guaranteed revenue earner. Much like Chandramukhi. Not original. Not groundbreaking. Good entertainer. Worth watching twice.

anniyan...the story that reminds me of my own frustrations; a masterpiece to the core reflecting the need for Indian public to think ( at least ) of their basic responsibilities as citizens; not anticipating any major change in their behaviors though. a must watch for every Indian., and in my opinion it rightly deserves the national award for both movie & it's hero. have seen the movie 6 times till now... shankar sir is really great and vikram...too good to be loved by one and all for his histrionics.i always wondered what if god is physically present among us punishing the wrong-doers..the subject of the movie falls in this line..in all of us, if we closely observe, there's an intrinsic desire to be like someone or be someone at different points in our day-to-day life...the protagonist arises from one of this inner manifestations of the base character which is obviously meek like scores of us..you can't expect a subject like this hitting the Indian screens, thanks for the director for taking up a bold risk who has delivered a punch of entertainment along with his greatest asset..that is story-telling.in this movie you will find yourself, the hell, and even the road to heaven too;

One of the biggest flaws in this movie concerns the same thing that Shankar actually got right during Boys. In Boys, 99% of the characters were new entrants and unknowns and were thus were very realistic and highly effective in their roles. However, in Anniyan, every villain, every common bad guy and every misc character were played by big leaguers who would have been familiar for the zillionth time. A coupla comedians play bad guys and are extremely ineffective in that role and difficult to take seriously. Thus the elements of shock normally present in a Shankar flick do not exist in Anniyan. The second biggest flaw is the overuse of really bad CGI, cheap gimmickry and too many references to the internet. Third, too many movies have been copied and the remakes of the scenes look utterly stupid. This movie has obviously been formulated and engineered to rake in money at the box office without actually offering anything amazing or worthy.

50th top rated Indian movie currently. Imdb must be some kind of joke. As this film uses possibly all cliches, ignores all logic, is extremely over the top, contains lousy slow-motion action scenes and all the stuff that a true cinema fan will hate. The story is of a youngster having three different personalities. One of them, Remo is so bad, no one can like him, but here in the film, our girl falls for this moron. But in the end, the innocent guy has to get her, things which you can't imagine in real life. If you have ever watched Primal fear or any such film on split personality, you would know how stupidly it was shown here. The stranger had actually organized a concert for himself, distributed the posters all over the city, made it a newspaper headline and yet no one actually has seen him. How is this possible. Can the screenplay writer be that dumb? Can I talk about the action scenes? The unnecessary slo-mos, close-ups and the fact that half of the film is just fight scenes. They were overused to an extent that it becomes boring, something synonymous with Shankar's films. A great watch for pseudo intellectuals. And something cinema enthusiasts must avoid.

It's original only if you haven't read a novel or watched an English serial in the last 20 years. The basic story line is a bit of Indian - I guess somehow the director realizes that was his best movie - and pretty much has no other real ideas. Once again the graphics etc are on for show and are pretty ordinary - only serving to distract from the movie rather than add any value to it. Vikram has done okay - but he always seems to be 'working' so hard at his acting. His fans, will of course, go nuts, and clamor for another award. Forget the absolute loss of logic regarding scene staging as the movie proceeds, the incredible lack of tempo in the first half, the bloated and expensive, but unimaginative-pictured songs... and do we need another protagonist who goes after society because of a personal disaster. In the end, Shankar's habit of pretending to provide social commentary without providing any genuine or realistic solutions or even intelligent analysis is insulting. Someone ask him to watch Mudhalvan, Gentleman or Indian again. Take a hint from the director he used be! Very very disappointing
