In my opinion, this movie is a "must see". In this movie we see "a day in the life" of American Soldiers fighting, killing and dying in the absurd situation the leaders of this country forced upon them in Iraq. You get a sense of the bravery and skill of the regular soldier and a taste of what the reserves who never expected to be there are feeling. This story tries to show us as much as possible about what's happening over there as they can in the limited space of the movie.
Granted this is low budget. The actors are young and inexperienced. The number of attacks they endure and survive in one day starts to remind me of playing war as a boy. With a bigger budget they could've had several units spread throughout Iraq and living through the various situations. As it is, this one unit of soldiers sees the effects of war on their friends, their allies, their enemies, innocent bystanders and themselves, all in one long, surreal day.
Bottom line... I remember the day all these Ohio boys that grew up not far from here were killed. This movie is a tribute to them and all the other American and other youths killed and wounded in this senseless war. It shows their dedication to duty and their bravery. It also shows that Iraqi's were not terrorists until we started killing them and occupied their country. It mentions that all the reasons given to us for the war are lies. The true terrorists are in Washington, etc. This is a must see even though it doesn't qualify as a Hollywood blockbuster and maybe because of that. In light of "United 93" and other 9/11 propaganda that is about to come out, I don't think Hollywood is allowed to tell the truth. Anyway, God help us all and now I'll get off the soapbox.

I watched this last night with my 14 year old son. His ambition is to join the army. I have neither encouraged nor discouraged him, he must make up his own mind. This film contains terrifying scenes of mutilation.I was pleased about that. Not because I am a fan of gratuitous violence but because it's the closest I would like him to get to the horror and irrationality of war. Some of the scenes, especially the one towards the end where the kids are kicking heads around and the militia arrive and there is a gun fight, lack credibility. I don't believe that US soldiers would be so indisciplined as to engage an enemy in such a way. Artistic license I suppose! Anyway, a good film. Should probably be watched in conjunction with Black Hawk Down.

Wow, I never knew a Hummer could take about a dozen RPGs at point blank range and emerge without a scratch. And OMG, "Sarge" giving the boys pep talks every five minutes and undergoing field surgery every 15 minutes or so. And then, to top it all off, about a dozen US soldiers (armed with only knives and their love of country) against 50 or so Iraquis (with machine guns and RPGs) duke it out in the Canadian desert. Also hilarious...these soldiers have machine guns and they spray about 1000 bullets a second at the enemy...they hit nothing. Then, they run out of machine gun ammo, so they start firing their sidearm handguns...guess what? They can hit a fly off the top of a soda can from about 100 yards. LOL.
The action sequences had an "A-Team" quality about them that hasn't been seen since, well, the A-Team. RPGs hit the front grill of a Hummer and/or huge truck, yet the "explosion" takes place 20 feet away with little sparkles (and NO damage). Someone in the message boards mentioned that the Iraquis kept showing up like Ninjas in a bad Kung Fu flick, which is exactly right.
The Iraqui "policeman"...LOL. Which writing genius came up with this guy? "I must stay here with my men". Anyone who had anything to do with the making of this film should bow their head in shame...I don't care about the politics of it...I love both the pro and anti-war flicks equally, but this thing is just horrible.
One last thing Mr, Director, the fade out/in for every scene change gets REAL annoying after 2 or 3 times. Maybe next time, hire and editor.

Anyone making a movie like this has a point of view, and it was interesting to try to figure out what the message of it was going to be. As the soldiers nobly face a series of obstacles that symbolize the problems the U.S. faces in Iraq, that point of view emerges -- this is all for nothing. The film starts out as if it is going to be a realistic re-enactment of a day in Iraq, but the encounters become more and more symbolic and far-fetched as it goes along, including accidentally happening upon a secret CIA torture camp and killing the enemy in a mass knife fight because they are out of ammunition and the U.S. forces are out gunned. Could be an interesting film to provoke a conversation with someone who is pro-war.

I just watched "American Soldiers" and was almost blown away like a lot of people in the film. Iraq is a deadly snake pit where you can't tell enemy from friend and the soldiers are constantly being attacked or attacking. This film took me there and convinced me this is as close as I want to get to it. If I had a child there on either side I would be sick. Lots of extreme closeups and plenty of action, quickly cut. Sydney Furie is a great director--his "The Ipcress File" with Michael Caine is one of my favorites.
What I liked most is it has a liberal slant. This war sucks (like all wars really--what will it take for all of us to "get along"). The soldiers realize that the reasons for the war are bogus: WMDs, 9/11, spreading democracy. It's all BS and the soldiers realize that but fight for the buddies they love, not the politics. But at least the politics are given air. Made by Canadians who can't be intimidated by our President and his Vice, this film tells it like it is. I didn't think this story would ever be told truthfully but here it is. This is entertainment that enlightens. Thank God.

I can't believe this director is still making movies. I mean, look at the movies he's made, they're almost all rated less than 4 stars. I wish there was a negative rating here so I could give it at least a -5 for such a terrible movie. The acting is completely and extremely lame. The soldiers look like they have never seen and/or touched a gun before, and it scares me. Think about it, those guys are the people who are supposed to protect our country and they can't even shoot straight. My 5 year old cousin can even shoot better that (with a toy gun of course.) It makes me wonder why the hell I wasted 2 hour to watch this stupid movie. I guess I've lost some IQ after watching it.

To me this was a great movie. I feel like it deals with a lot of the real facts that are going on in the lives and minds of the soldiers fighting in Iraq. I thought the acting was really pretty good. There needs to be more films like this. There is very little news coverage on the Iraq war anymore and I haven't seen to many movies about this was so far. I couldn't Begin to count the number of movies about W.W.1 & 2 or the Veitnam war. I think that at times There are movies made only for the pockets of Hollywood, and it's a relief to see movies made for the information of the facts of what life must be like for these soldiers surviving in places and conditions like these. How friendships are started and the people you come to care about are taken from you for reason you just can't understand.
