Not... terrible, but just disappointing overall. I'm a huge fan of low budget found footage and I'd heard good things about this one from other fans. But this just kinda... Well it was just pretty stupid. The actual altar in the film isn't even the one shown on the promo poster. In the movie, it looks like a damn Halloween prop from Party City. Honestly, as much as I wanted to like this one, it just fell flat on it's face. All the "scary" bits were laughable and poorly executed. And the climax went over like a fart in the wind.

Bad writing and nothing much in way of a plot at all. Props looked like they were from Spirit Halloween. Not even entertainingly bad.

If you have absolutely nothing else to do, at all, why not give this movie a try. The acting is pretty good, the ladies are attractive and the men are good looking if you still count Bo as a boy. Other than that, this movie is a waste. Its a first person, found footage type that has been played out for years. I only relay this because I wish I had known it before I started watching. All the reviews I read about this say how bad it is and what a waste of time it is but I tend to not believe critics. I should have where this movie is concerned. You have to wait until there is 15 minutes of the movie left before it gets going. Everything else is buildup, just pointless banter really. Once you get to the point where it can be called a "horror" movie, you barely want to try to finish. I love terrible movies, especially terrible horror movies but this movie is too much of a bad thing.

... of idiotic characters. We have the requisite band of "friends" heading off to some wilderness adventure/class reunion. Somehow, our intrepid band of idiots become separated from their overall group and end up setting up camp with a friendly couple. Over and over again, someone in our merry band makes some kind of remark about having seen horror movies, and not doing the stupid things that they've seen in horror movies, and yet what do they do? They drive on in a direction that they know nothing about, in a car with known mechanical issues. They shoot a person making a threat, and immediately drop the gun to the ground. They separate in the dark. The absolutely most annoying thing about this movie is the character, "Bo". He supposedly has a "touch of Asperger's", but he comes across as perhaps the most cloying, clingy, whiny, sniveling wimp in the history of cinema. He whimpers, wheedles, whines, and mewls through virtually every line that he has. Marshmallows are tougher than "Bo". I was hoping that he would get killed off just so that I wouldn't have to listen to him snivel any longer. Do yourself a favor and pass on this piece of trash.

A well written and directed movie with enough suspense. What made Altar different in the found footage genre was nobody shouting "is that thing turned on, turn the damn thing off now". I don't understand why writers think yelling at the camera adds credence to a movie. Despite being a low budget movie, the acting and directing was good enough, The only character I couldn't understand was Bo. All the other characters brought something to the movie, contributing to the ambiance, whether that be fear, panic, heroism etc... Bo's character seemed like a lost child. Whilst his background was explained early in the movie, borderline asperges's and having had problems, his dialogue with Asher about the blue stones "I like it and it's pretty" portrayed an innocence and immaturity that was out of place. It's a shame for the other actors, as Bo spent the entire movie complaining. If no body had mentioned Bo having asperges's, one could be forgiven for thinking he was a young girl, 'don't walk there, you'll crush the pretty flowers' though not a line from the movie pretty much sums up Bo's personality.

A true stinker. The found footage genre is a guilty pleasure of mine, and although I know that 90% of these films are going to be trash, I'll go out of my way to watch them when I can in hopes of discovering one of the gems. This is not one of them. The opening sequence is painful to watch. A newlywed couple in a hotel and the husband for some stupid reason is wearing a head camera fresh out of the shower? (But if he wasn't we wouldn't see the generic crazy man at the room door warning them of the dangers in the woods.) It's pure laziness on film makers part. The actors are embarrassing to watch as they try to portray emotion and pretend like they care about anything they are saying. I couldn't finish this drivel. Don't believe the high ratings. They are clearly posted by people associated with the film in some way. Garbage.
