A Date with Miss Fortune

I started watching it without any expectations - just another romcom movie on TV. I'm not a huge romcom fan, but there are some movies that pop out above others, and surprisingly or not - this one popped out for me. The story telling was well done, the camera angles, the soundtrack, the jokes, the romance was on point, and the actors were natural. You could literally feel the romance between them, and the diner fragments were very well input into the whole picture. I don't know, maybe I liked it because I've had a bad romance couple of times and I'm just wishing I can find a woman like Maria, meeting her in the same circumstances and stuff...? Might be. Yeah, things in real life work much differently, eh? 😏 My rating: 8/10.

Chance meeting. English speaking mail meets foreign language speaking female. Her family is a big obstacle for both of them. They split up and I don't want to ruin to movies for you but you could switch to Fools Rush In and see the same movie in a different location more seasoned actors

Horrible movie. I am Portuguese and that is definitely not how portuguese people are. Terrrible acting. One of the worst movies I've ever watched, couldn't even finish it.

This movie gets better and better as it plays. Some very funny lines and a great ensemble cast. Bravissimo!!

This was an enjoyable, cute and funny movie. Not the greatest, but fun enough. I'm sure that some will compare this to My Big Fat Greek Wedding and some comparisons are apt. Maria is beautiful, and charming and extremely quirky. And she snores. Jack is one of those earthy guys who doesn't let anything go by without making a joke. Maria's family is very traditional. Her father would be tough on any man. This movie is about the two falling in love, and about trying to make it work in a family where everything is stacked against Jack from the start. The two have so many differences that you would think they would be better off with someone else. There are funny moments, and sweet moments.

A nice comedy, fresh, inspired, full of interesting ideas, with good dialogue (and small budget). You might not recognize the exteriors because it's not US but Canada (Toronto). And the Actors playing the two main characters (Jack and Maria) are Canadians too. They also wrote the script and produced the movie, together, and truly are husband and wife in real life. Which is nice and interesting at the same time. As it is movie's flash-forward structure, which adds to production's overall quality and originality. Many good actors help to keep the attention high, starting from the great Joaquin de Almeida (who really is Portuguese) to Vik Sahay. Singer Nelly Furtado plays a nice cameo (Nelia: Maria's favorite cousin…) and the musical score includes one piece I like and it's poorly known: 'Ticket to Love' from the Hawaiian band 'Goodbye Elliott'. Enjoy.

The story is not even close to being average. On top of that the acting was horrible from the lead male actor. These combination made watching this an unpleasant experience. The title itself was a red flag but I still decided to watch this anyway. And not to my surprise, I ended up completely wasting the time. Amid this chaos the only positive thing was the acting of Jeannette Sousa. She wasn't annoying like the people around her. My suggestion is....there are tens of thousands of better movies out there. Go watch those.

Excellent and original. If you like Jennifer Aniston romantic comedies, nothing wrong with that, but, um, this is very different

Struggling TV writer Jack is alone in a diner when he's surprised by his ex and her new boyfriend. He is rescued by Maria who pretends to be his date. They have a cute first date that night as flashforward clips show their clashing lifestyles living together in the future. He struggles to fit in her superstitions and her large Portuguese family. This is My Big Fat Greek Wedding without the comedy writing or experienced comedic actors or good chemistry. The lead couple has pretty on their side but they don't have great comedic skills. They aren't the best and the filmmaking is amateur hour. The family does have the great Joaquim de Almeida playing the patriarch. The culture clash with the old country style family is the best part of the writing but it's not enough to fill out the movie. This has good ambitions but inferior execution.
