I think is hard to recommend this film to anyone (just a cheap video rental) as it's hard to understand the high rating (7.2 in sept 2003) and enthusiastic user comments. What a disappointment this film was. Perhaps I overrated it to my mind, however `8 Women' is boring and the musical numbers are often embarrassing. Only the musical interlude of Emmanuelle Béart is all I can remember: funny and sexy. The ending is predictable and downright nastiness. My Evaluation : 4 of 10.

I only chose to watch this because there was no other good movies released at my local video shop that week that where any good so i picked this up and decided to give it a go and thank god i did it is fantastic all the female leads do a great job and i was shocked(pleasently) when they started singing it just came out of nowhere. And VIRGINIE LEDOYEN and EMMANUEL BEART are so beautiful in this movie. bEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR OUTSTANDING SCRIPT OUTSTANDING SINGING OUTSTANDING ACTING OUTSTANDING MOVIE 11/10

I really liked this movie. It's Agatha Christie at the comedy club! A farcical murder mystery/musical played out just like a stage play, with the action unfolding in a matter of a few hours. François Ozon puts together a great ensemble of actress. Isabelle Hupert outshines them all with a great interpretation of Augustine, the neurotic sister of Catherine Deneuve. I also liked Virginie Ledoyen performance as Suzon. And what a great way to make us enter the life of the characters by letting them sing a song about their feelings. Early Technicolor style gives a retro taste to the movie that's quite enjoyable. Out of 100, I give it 84. That's good for *** out of ****. Seen in Toronto, at the Cumberland Cinemas, on September 25th, 2002.

I'd heard terrible things about this movie, and from fellow French students as well. I began watching it as a murder mystery, and with a very critical eye, but when Ludovine Sagnier broke out into her '50s rockabilly number, I bust out laughing and the laughs just kept coming. It is camp, but glorious camp. If you come to this movie expecting not high art but simple, whole-hearted goofiness, you won't be disappointed.

This is a very funny movie based in a playwright, about the crime of the patriarch of a rich French family in the fifties. In this mystery movie made by the new infant terrible the eight women revelled there secrets and sing one song each other. This are 8 of the most important French actresses of the new millennium,. The cast is excellent specially the younger daughter, the sister in law and the stepmother of the `victim'(sagnier, Huppert and Darieux). In fact the first and the last song, sang by newcomer Sagnier and veteran Darrieux are the most beautiful, the rest is so -so. Other big idea is to parody the sex appear of Denueve, Beart, Ardant and Huppert. Ozon is one of the most important innovating mind of the decadent French cinema. Maybe he and many more can resurrect the French cinema

In short - I wasnt surprised to find out that US viewers thought it was piece of crap while EU viewers welcome warmly this beautiful and charming picture ... How come I am not surprised at all? Americans once again proved they're brainwashed and simple. They want an action triller with gore, explosions , Will Smith and who not making nasty sexual oriented jokes while dead bodies been thrown out of the chasing vehicle ... well you will NOT find anything else here! Nevertheless this is gem of the year for me, charming delight. beauty, warmth and not least - good script and good actor's work. Hey, after all the french women are more beautiful :)

I really enjoyed the first part when the father died. And the investigations that follow just after that: we wondering what happened and we tried to know who is the killer. I found it pretty interesting and have some nice revelations, surprises, mysteries. But i found the ending a little bit rushed and have clearly non sense and we still dont know why he killed himself. I need to say also that the part where they sing is completely useless but why not. I recommend anyway: the investigations were pretty interesting and have some unexpected moments. But the End was a little bit disappointed for me.

A beautiful, shimmering, silently comic film with a hint of farce and a galloping great slab of French cinema ironic nostalgia. All great film making is here only better. Great cinematography, wonderful set and costume design and let's not forget Deneuve, Ardent, Huppert and Beart at their imperious best. It is so refreshing to see an honest heart felt film that nods with passion and pride to the movies that made some of us want to be film-makers in the first place. It doesn't challenge or depress it inspires and entertains. I love this movie. I love its simplicity, its unflashy command of the medium ( at a time when over contrived camera is all the rage) and most of all I love its heart. This is a film made with an unpretentious passion and love of subject that is all but smothered today. More of the same from us English speakers would be nice but I fear unlikely. Vive Francois Ozon, and the magnificent cast and crew. Thank you very much for reminding me why I became a film maker.
