I watched this movie on Friday night and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was great considering its small budget. I really enjoyed the performances, especially Quvenzhane Wallis, who plays the daughter Zora. I thought everyone did a great job with the performances. I loved the mother/daughter relationship between Jennifer Hudson and Quvenzhane. I also loved to hate Sam Worthington in this. He definitely played a role that was pretty different for him. Same with JHud, it was nice to see her in something that had nothing to do with music. And I usually don't do sci-fi, but I enjoyed it and definitely would recommend for sure.

In dreary, poorly performed near-future sci-fi "Breathe" Jennifer Hudson & over-confident teen daughter Quvenzhané Wallis live alone (months after hubbie / dad Common left them) in empty post-apocalyptic NY, struggling in the barren planet's devastated atmosphere - til Milla Jojovich, Sam Worthington & Raúl Castillo turn up asking about their oxygen machine... but are the gun-toting visitors' intentions good or bad? Cue tediously repetitive to & fro 'trust them or not' flawed sequences all leading to a wholly implausible short-cut ending. Doug Simon's lame screenplay is chiefly to blame, but Stefon Bristol's stressed direction doesn't help. Disappointing fare. A turd. Flush it.

Acting: 9/10 Story: 8/10 Director: 4/10 Visuals: 8/10 What is bad about this movie: the psycho in this movie is a boring cliché seen in so many psycho movies the story, while not original, is pretty good, but is dumbed down by several bad choices in the script, which are quite off putting and they explain so many bad reviews. I agree with the bad reviews but not with their final score. several plot holes could have been fixed with a more inventive script, but instead, they are constantly taking you out of the movie's flow there is no black bad character, all baddies are whites, which might indicate a political agenda. small details like watches indicating only O2, while today's smartwatches can show so many more things. What is good about this movie (and most of the bad reviews are ignoring): very good acting I liked the story build up, the realism and the imminence of such of scenario in real life special effects are more than enough for this movie and do very good job for the immersion the ending, while quite predictable, was giving me a bit of hope in humanity after all.

Near future Dystopian world, I have a soft spot for such series and movies so I managed to like parts of this. However this movie sucks. I like Common as an actor, especially when he plays these gritty, troubled characters. I think the story was decent, the dialogue just wasn't that convincing. With a little bit better dialogue I think this movie could've been okay. I was also really annoyed by how she kept saying "freaking" because she didn't wanna cuss. And the computer system voice for security in the building was terrible. Milla Jovovich and Sam Worthington feel like decent actors whose last couple movies have mostly sucked. Although I do like "monster hunter"(it's not great though) for Milla and I'm counting Avatar for Sam. I don't recommend unless you tolerate bad scifi.

Something happens (it's not explained of course) that rids the Earth of all of it's breathable air. As a result all plant life and wild life die forcing people to live in shelters. In this shelter the mother is a farmer, the father is an engineer/survivalist who created this particular shelter, and the daughter is straight up annoying. As I said the premise is decent, but their is way too much stupidity in this movie. The movie opens with a panning shot of the interior of the shelter and there is a newspaper clipping that says "Local farmer defies city. Changes law." You never know what law this was supposed to be, but it doesn't matter. You can't change laws by defying the city. That's not how it works. There is a scene of the daughter standing in front of a mural of a black girl with a mask on holding her fist up and it says "We Can't Breath". I about shut it off there. They aren't even trying to be subtle anymore. The grandfather dies while trying to get a Malcom X book for the girl. Yes, because even when it's the end of the world apparently we still need race politics. They push the "stronk black wahmen" trope to new levels. The farmer mother can apparently fight off anybody she comes across. And she thinks the Earth will heal itself even though with everything being dead that would be quite impossible. The daughter is apparently such a genius she can create an EMP out of a flashlight and copper wire (rolls eyes), but is also too dumb to know that when you are transmitting on a radio that anybody can hear trying to talk to your father you don't broadcast important information. Which is what she did, and how people found them. I'm sad that Mila and Sam were wasted on this trash heap.

Seen this movie today, without prior knowledge on what it was about or how it was rated. Milla Jovovich & Sam Worthington being familiar names that I enjoyed the movies of, raised my expectation of this being an quality movie. The concept sounded interesting on the condition of the earth with city views and landscape shown. The air we breathe is of an delicate percentage balance after all. However it immediately got clear to me that the characters don't take their survival seriously. Not even able to communicate properly, considering the deadly environment they're supposed to be living in. Their dialogues and actions were of absolute stupidity. When life is at stake, safety is an priority and there's an immediate state of seriousness, and this movie showed a total lack of that with the main characters. Talking the most nonsensical of topics, and behaving in an carefree way, living luxuriously as if in an penthouse style, doing spa's & beauty treatments, heavy make up and nails done in every scene, wining & dining wasting food, all with laughter & smiles. It couldn't be more unfitting to the concept of survival situation and post-apocalypse concept of living underground in an bunker as written in description here on IMDB. Milla & Sam's acting performance seemed on point and class as usual for quality actors. But their characters actions and the lines they were given... They were spouting out such utter nonsense unfitting to the scene & circumstances, that there was an immediate dislike and aggravation, from me and the one I was watching with. We still watched it till the end, enduring one idiotic and nonsensical scene after the next, just to see where it ends up. And it was an cringed-facepalm watch throughout. I never expected it to be such an bad movie, especially not with such an starring cast.

At first glance, the film seems very interesting and Breathe has a great cast on board to become a good film. Starring, we see Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, she received the prestigious figurine in 2007 for her adjoring role in the film Dreamgirls. Quvenzhané Wallis was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for the film Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2013, even becoming the youngest nominee ever in this category at the age of 9 years and 135 days. In addition, we see Milla Jovovich, who of course we all know from films like Resident Evil and The Fifth Element and for dessert we get Sam Worthington, who played Sully in James Cameron's Avatar- films and also has a laundry list of fine films to his name. There is also a (small) role for rapper Common in the film, which also played roles in John Wick: Chapter 2 and Wanted from 2008. The papers are basically good and the story also sounds very interesting. Still, if you see the trailer, this will probably make you doubt, because that looks rather cheap with the red/orange filter. And unfortunately the trailer was right, because although the first reviews of this film were not too good and this is perhaps a bit very exaggerated, the film is just not good. Especially Sam Worthington, who plays the role of Lucas, really plays an extremely bad role in this film and he probably only played this role for the money and didn't really feel like it. Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson plays mom Maya who is left alone with her daughter Zora (who invents these names by the way) when father Darius disappears without a trace when he wants to bury his father. Hudson does her thing dutifully and doesn't know how to impress or anything like that. Quvenzhané Wallis, who therefore plays the role of Zora, makes a bit of an attempt and perhaps she plays the best role in the film, although we should not exaggerate that either. That remains Milla Jovovich, who plays the role of Tess, who just does her thing and nothing more actually. The story is put together too simple and you get to see a 'home invasion' movie, where you actually know from the first minute what is going to happen. Not much attempt is made to disguise the course a bit or make it exciting. Here and there the film eventually becomes a bit entertaining when Maya and Tess go out and Lucas and Zora are left alone. In the end, the film will go exactly as you think it will go. The end really makes no sense at all and above all that gives the feeling that the whole fight has been completely for nothing. When Tess and Lucas travel all the way to New York from Philadelphia to watch and get their hands on an oxygen machine, they really had discovered what happened in the end and that gives the film a full stab in the back. Fortunately, the film lasts an hour and a half, but even that still feels like a pure waste of time. Breathe has unfortunately become what the trailer already suggests, a pure B- film that tries to tear on a few names. Although the story has a lot of potential and sounds very interesting, you eventually get to see a cheap 'home invasion' movie. Here and there the film is still a bit entertaining, but if actually rapper Common puts down one of the best roles with his very small role in the film, you already know enough. How these kinds of films eventually manage to make a cinema internationally is really a mystery, in the past this had ended up directly in the video libraries. Don't be fooled by names like Sam Worthington or Milla Jovovich and don't be tempted at all that the two protagonists have been an Oscar winner and an Oscar nominee, because this film is simply not worth going to a cinema. For the really curious among us, you can wait for the movie to come to a streaming service or so and even then the movie is just not good.
